IMPRQVEMENT'IN Low-WATER INDICATORS.
, The Schedulenjvaferred to in Lhasa LettersPatent and making part of the same Befit known thatV I, RALPH R. CARPENTER, of Tippecanoe, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lowvwater` Indicatorsfor Steam-Boilers; and the follow# ingis declaredto hea full `and completedescription thereof.. Y x
This invention rel ites to that class of indicators in which the heat of 'the steam is made use of to ex'- pand a tube, ithe`expansion acting to open a ,valve to -an alarm when the waterfalls below a certain point.4
I makenuse of atube or barrel, andplace'the saine above a steam-boiler, a pipe from' the barrel running down into the `boiler tothe-low-water line;`an arm fromtheside of thispipe sustains a T-shaped-lever,^
which is' hung `upon a fulcrum, the longer arm of which lever is connected with a valve, and the short arms connect by tierods'with the expanding-tube or :barrel,(so that expansion of the barrel will act upon the lever through the tie-rods to open the alarm-valve and blow -a whistle. i
The pipe from the expandiug-tubeopens intoa pasy sage to the alarm-whistle below` the valve, so that -when the water falls below the safety point, the steam will enter the tuhe, and fthe `expansion of the barrel will open the valve 'and blowthe whistle.
In the drawingi Figure lis avertical- 'section of my apparatus, and Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, to`
`show the head of 'the T-sha-ped lever.
a is a vertical pipe from the steam ningdown'to the low-water line.
The globe-valve?) in thisA pipe may be used Ito cut 'oi the indicator, if `it becomes necessary.
The pipe lt sustains uponits upper end-the expan- `sion-tube o, which is closed by the cap c' 'at the upper rlhe arm d, from the `side of the pipe @sustains at its outer endthe 'vertical pipe e to the `whistle e', and
je arm d connectsA the pipes.
a andre-toadmit steam. The angley of' this openingf is formedas, a valveseat for the valve g, which valve g extends through v the arm d n a vertical direction, and is sustained beheaded lever h.
,low the'arm-dvby the longer end of the cross or T4 The end of the valve is formed as a screwpin, and
anat, i, secures it tothe arm h. .l
' The cross-headed lever his upon a fulcrum-piml,
in lugs'npon the lower side of the arm d, and, being T-shape, the cross-head' portion- 7o' extends atrght angles tothe longer arm, and the cross-head is ofa length that allows for receiving the .suspending-rods m clear ofthe sides of the tube c.
The tie-rods m, pass fromlugs 5 upon'the cap c' of the barrel c to this cross-head h', and the screw-nuts 2 upon tie-rods, lm, allow for adjustment.
lhe spring o is placed upon the cross-head It', its forkedends 'being around thetie-rods m, and the nuts 3 serveto tighten the spring o upon the cross-head h', to give `the pressure necessary to keep the valve g up to its seat and allow for the eilect ofthe slight expansion by the heat from the contiguous boiler.
'lhe valve g is provided with a tightening-nut, 4, and elastic packing, to keep the parts steam-tight.
This construction gives easy access to the valve for renewing the packing or grinding inthe valve.
When the water in the boiler falls below` the end I of pipe a, the water in the barrel c runs down and steam passes into the. pipe a, barrel c, and opening f,
` the heat expands the barrel lengthwise, and this expansion acts'through the tie-rods mand cross-headed lever 7L h to open the valve r/ and admit steam to the whistle.
I The tie-rods being upon the short endet the lever h, the motion is multiplied atthevalve; thus asmall amount of expansion will open the valve o sutciently to blow the whistle.
This constructionoi parts makes a compact andv reliable indicator for steam-generators, not liable to get out of order, and gives easy ac cess for repairs.
I claim as my invention#- 1. The T-shaped lever h h', and springe, combined` with the rodsm, 'nuts 3, expansionftube a, and valve g, substantially as and furthe purposes speciiied.
2. The valve g, accessible from the outside of the steam-passage ofan alarm-whistle, substantially as and forV the purposes set forth.
Dated this 20th day'of May, A. D. 1870. Witnesses: RALPH R. CARPENTER.
