Be it known that I, WlLLIAM l-Iawns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in WatenHeating Apparatus, of which the following is a specihcation.
This invention relates to improven'lents in water heating apparatus more particularly adapted for use with domestic stand boilers and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved form of heater which may be readily attached to the bottom of an ordinary stand boiler without changing the construction of the boiler and in which the water .will enter the heater fromthe boiler and be discharged from the heater back into the boiler through a single opening in the bot-tom of the boiler.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character in which the water will enter the heater at a point lower than the discharge outlet of the heater to induce circulation.
A further object is to provide an improved form of connection between the heater and the boiler.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, durable and cheap in construction and effective and ellicient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invent-ion consists in the features of novelty in the construc tion combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, illustrating an embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an improved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, showing the same at tuched to a boiler and showing a portion of the boiler in section. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on line 2---2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. t is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of the invention, the numeral 10 designates a portion of the ordinary domestic stand boiler,

which is provided with a supply inlet pipe 11, which preferably extends from the top of the boiler to a point adjacent the bottom thereof. This boiler is provided with the usual outlet (not shown).
The bottom 12 of the boiler is provided with an opening preferably located at the center thereof and extending through this opening is a tubular member designated generally by the reference numeral 14. This tubular member is provided with peripheral screw threads 15 intermediate its ends which a re adapted to engage corresponding screw threads in a suitable collar 16 which surrounds the opening in the bottom of'the boiler, to form a support for the tubular member. The tubular member 14 is provided with a partition 17 extending longiludinally thereof to form two passages 18, ll). One of the passages 19 opens through the side of the tubular member 14, adjacent one end as at 20 and the other passage 18 extends directly through the ends of the tubular member. A portion of one end of the tubular member is cut away so that the end of the partition 17 will project below the end of the passage 18, as at 21. The tubular member is connected to the bottom of the boiler 12 so that one end thereof will project into the boiler a sutlicicnt distance to permit the opening 20 of the passage 19 to have communication with the boiler 10. The other end of the tubular member depends below the boiler and connected thereto and preferably spaced a short distance from the bottom of the boiler is a water heater 22 which is provided with an annular chamber 23 and a chamber 24, which latter is preferably located at the diametric center the heater. The annular chamber 23 has communication with the chamber 24. by means of a passage which forms an outlet from the chamber 24: to the chamber 23.
The chamber also has communication with the chahi'bcr 24 by means of an upwardly inclined passage 26, the outlet end 27 of which passage is located above the bottom of the passage The water heater 22 is secured to and supported by the tubular member 14 preferably by means of a screwthreacled connection 28 between the extremity of the tubular member 14 and the top of the water heater. The portion 21 of the partition and the cooperating portion of the wall of the tubular member which extends below the cut off extremity of the tubular member, projects into the chamber 24 of the water heater, and terminates at a point in proximity to the bottom of the chamber. The passage 18 in the tubula r iresnbcr also has communication with the cha 2-1: above the pointoi' communlcalion between the passage 19 and the chamber 2 L.

The water heater provided witha reinforced portion 30, preferably arranged at the center thereof. with which portion one xtremit v of the support 31 has engagement and which support also rests upon the floor or ground. I
lVith this improved construction it will be apparent that the heater will be supported. directly by the standard 31 and the boiler will be supported by the heater through the medium ot'the tubular member 14 and by the provision of the single tubular member having a plurality of passages therein, to form an inlet to the heater from the-boiler and an outlet from the heater to the boiler, it is necessary to provide only a single opening and a single connection between the bottom of the boiler and the heater, thereby not only reducing the expense of installation but also rendering itpossible to attach this improved heater to an old boiler or a boiler of the ordinary const'rhction, without providing any additional iopenings in the bottom oflthe boiler for the circulation pipes. p The burner is adjustaibly supported on lthe standard 31 below the heater whereby the distance between the burner and the heater may be varied to meetfihe existing conditions and the flange 33 depends from the heater and surrounds the burner to direct the flame against the bottom of the heater.
It will be apparent that the Water will flow from the boiler into the passage 19 ot' the tubular member through the opening 20 which is located in close proximity to the bottom of the boiler and will be discharged into the heater adjacent the bottom of the chamber 24 from which chamber the water will pass through the passage into the annular chan'lber 23 and from the annular chamber 23 back into the chamber 24 through the upwardly inclined passage 26 and back into the boiler from the chamber througl'i the passage 18 of the tubular a member 1 1- and the tubular member or pipe 29. With this arrangement will be noted that the water enters the annular. chamber 23' at a point below the discharge outlet from said chamber so thata circulation will be induced in the heater. 1
In the exemplificatio'n shown in Fig. 4 the water heater 34, which corresponds to the water heater 22 in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with a tubular extension designated generally by the reference numeral 35, which is supported within and spaced from the anscrew threads 41 similar to the threads 15 on v the tubular member 14 and a collar 42 is secured to the bottom 13 or the boiler 44 to surround an opening in the bottom of the boiler through which the extremity 40 passes Theperipheral threads 41 on'the tubular member 35 are adapted to" engage the threads in the collar 42. The passage 37 opens through the side of the tubular 1 member as 'at 45 adjacent the extremity 40 and above the bottom 43 of the boiler while the passage 38 opens through the end of the tubular member and to which end a pipe 46 is connected for discharging the Water into the boiler.
The passage 47 in the water heater 3el-cor responds with the passage 25 in the Water heater 22 and is adapted to receive the Water from the passage 37 which enters the latter passage from the boiler 44 through the opening 45. The water entering the passage 4:? will be discharged into the annular chainher or passage 48, which corresponds to the annular heating chamber 23 in Figs. 1 and 2, and will be discharged therefrom into the passage 49 which corresponds with the passage 26 of the heater 22. From the passage 49 the water will enter the receptacle 39 on the other side of the partition 36 to flow through the passage 38 and discharge into the boiler -14 through the tubular member or pipe 46. In this exemplification of the invention, the water will be discharged into the water heater at a lower point than the discharge outlet from the heater, thereby inducing circulation of tle water through the heater. i
If desired, instead of providing a jacket 50, which is supportcdby the water heater and which surrounds the boiler and is for the products of combustion from the burner'around the boiler, this jacket may be dispensed with and a cap or flanged member 51, shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4-, may be provided, which is supported preferably by the bottom of the boiler to prevent the products of combustion, from the burner from rising above the bottom of theboiler.
