To all tollem tmag/ concern:
Be it known that l, NA'THANIEL B. WWALES, citizen of the United States-and resident of Braintree, Norfolkl county,4 Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Four-Cycle Engines, otwhich the ollowing is a specification.
The-invention relates to engines or. that class known as -tour-cycle engines and its object is to rovide means for Cont-rolling the supply o the motivoluid t0 the cylinder and the exhaustof the Waste products therefrom which shall be'simple and eonipact in construction, shall aiord comparetively large port. and passage areas for the reodysnd rapid supply andthe exhaust of the gases, and shall operate with practically no waste of the motive fluid.
A further objectv is to provide e construetio-n in Which a single valve may he comhined with the cylinders of :t tivo-cylinder ,engine in such manner that, the supply and exhaust for the-engine cylinder fire controlled by e .substantially cylindrical. rotary valve mounted 1n a, valve 'chamber which commu- 'n-icetes "with the. upper end of the cylinder through a.' short port. The valve is provided Ywith non-communicating exhaust and supply ports which are in Communication with the exhaust chamber and supply ehemlow sleeve open at both ends and provided with a partition which divides its interior into two chambers. The supply -port ein.
tends longitudinally of the sleeve and opens 'through the peripheral wall of one oi'i the chambers While the exhaust port is similarly arranged and opens through the peripheral well of the other chamber. vThe supply and enheust ports ere thus in continuous oommunientio'n with the supply endefrheust chambers et opposite ends of the vslve. This construction provides forlarge port and passo areas with o. compe-ret rely smell valve. Bv` arranging the partition. spirellythe size or the valve rerlueed e minimum and Ithe partition may also he so four-cycle engine embodying the eatures'of.
the present invention. Fig. is o. horizontal section on line 2 2 Fig. l. Fi'r. issn enlerged elevation showing the ports inl the cylindrical valve. Fig. fl is e section on line fil-el Fig. 3 looking' in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is e horizontal sectional View through the cylinder ports of a tivo-cylinder engine enihodyingthe features oi the'ijeresent invention.
Refering toA the construction shown in l to 'i the cylinder of the engine is .inu diceted at l 'and may be provided with the usual water jacket 2 and with o, speri; plug indicated et 3. The piston 4 is mounted to reciprocate Within the cylinder in the usuel manner zindis connected by e. piston rod 5 with s crank tl secured to tee crook sl j' *1 t i. The motive. uid is supplied to the cylinder and the waste products discharged there from through e porty ,8 arranged between the upper end of the cylinder end a. cylindrical The valve chamber 9 1s valve chamber 9.
preferably arranged parallel to the cyl.-
inder and in as'close proximity thereto es is practicable. This arrangement et" ed vantage in securing a, compact construction and e short direct port passage from the valve chamber to the cylinder. The supfoly and exhaust through `the port: 8 are controlled by s cylindrical valve l0 mounted Within the valve easing 9 end provided with longitudinally extending exhaust end supply ports ll and 12 Whieh open through the pe riphersl Well of the valve. The piston in the cylinder 101' will ihelefore be making iis upward exhaust stroke while the piston in the cylinder 100 is making its downward suction or supply'stroke. After the pision of cylinder lOl has made its exhaust-Sirone the supply port 120 comes into register with the port S00 and continues in register therewith during the downward suction stroke of the @is ton. During' tl\is"stroke of the piston in evlinder lOl the wall of he valve 90 closes the port 80 of' the cylinder lODrand the piston therein makes its upward compression stroke The wall of thevalve continues to close the port 8() during the driving stroke of the piston in the cylinder 100 and at the end ofthis stroke Athe exhaust port 110 comes into communication with the cylinder port 80 and lremains in register therewith during the exhaust stroke of the piston in this cylinder. After the supply stroke of the pis` ton in he cylinder 101 has been completed the supply port 120 oi the valve passes ont of register ith the cylinder port 80() and the wall of the valve closes this port during the compression and driving sirolce of the piston and` until the exhaust port 110 again comes into register with the cylinder pori. Thus b v he continuous rotation of the valve 90 the supply of niotive'uid to the two cylinders and theexhaust of the waste products therefrom are controlled while the cranks lo which the piston is connect-ed are arranged on an angle of 180 degrees. By arranging the cylinders with theport of one cylinder J0 degrees in advance of the port of the other cylinder7 a compact. arrangement if; provided in which the cranks may be arranged at an angle of 180 degrees and in which short direct 'ports lead from the valve chamber to the cylinder and in which 'the ports and, valve chamber may be surrounded by the same Water jacket which I uu-rounds the cylinders. i
Without attempting to point out in detail thtJ various constructions and arrangements in which the features of the invention may he embodied, whatl i desire to claim iszi. A fram-cycle engine comprising two parallel cylinders, a valve chamber arranged parallel to the cylinders7 ports leadingv from the valve chamber to the cylinders arranged one 9G degrees in advance of the other, a valve sleeve within the valve chamber having ports the ends of which are closed hy the wall of the sleeve arranged to successively register with the ports for the two cylinders and so that the advance port will register with one cylinder port while the other valve port is registering with the other cylinder port, and a partition dividing the interior of the sleeve into two non-comuninicating chambers openingr out of the oppo. site ends of the sleeve, substantially as described.
A four-cycle engine comprising a elvlindex', a piston therein, a valve chanzher, a port in the wall of the chamber eonununicat ing with the cylinder. a hollow valve sleeve having open ends and fitting within the valve chamber, two similar. parallel ports openingV through the wall ot' the valve sleeve and arranged to register successively with the port in ihe val've chamber, and a partition within the sleeve, one edge of which e):- tends longitudinally along the inner wall ol the sleeve between the ports`r and the other edge of which extends spirally along the inner wall of the sleeve between the ports and divides the interior ofthe valve into two similar noncommunicating ehanihers. the
open ends of which are the open ends of the sleeve. substantially as described.
3. A four-cycle engine comprising: a cylinder, a piston therein, a valve chanlher. a port in the wall of the chamber conununi eating with the cylinder, a hollow vaive sleeve having circular open ends and continuous 'bearing surfaces fitting the. valve chamber at the ends4 of the port, and a partition dividing the interior of the sleeve into 'wo non-eon1municating chambers and two parallel ports of the .saine sil/.c in the walls of the respective chambersarranged to refais4` ter successively with the port in 'the valve chaniher, suhstantiallv as described.
ln witness whereof, i have hereunio set inv hand. this :28th day of Fcln'uarv IEW?. i N'li-iAN l llli Bf lli/' LES. in the presence oflaA li. FISH, l, A. iooaN.
