MONROE GUE'IT,'0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To THE HAR 82' iiEGEMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, A Con' ron Tm 'oF CON NECTICUT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE GUE'I'I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric 'Switches, of which the following is a specification.
- The object of my invention is to improve the construction of electric. switches of the rotary type, more particularly with a view to decreasing the cost of construction of a device of this sort.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings in which Figure-1, is a side elevation with some of the parts shown in.central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base with the spindle removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the base onthe line l1 of Fig. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the base.
Referring to the drawings Ex is the base, a a the stationary contacts mounted on the base, 6 the spindle carrying the movable contact member 5'. The spindle also carries the locking and unlocking mechanism which cooperates with the stop-plate secured to the base and by means'of which the movable contacts-are held against movement during order to store up enough power in the spring to move the movable contacts with a snap action. The spindle has its bearing in the base-piece and the object of my invention is to provide a novel and simple manner of providing a mounting for the spindle.
10 is the stop-platemounted on the base and having depending fingers 11 which pass through apertures 12 in the base and hold the stop-plate against rotation. These fingers extend entirely through the base and have a drive fit in the notches 15 in a washer 16 located underneath the base. The stopplate and'washer are centrally pierced as at 20 to give a bearing for the spindle at the upper and lower sides of the base, the hole through the base being larger than the spindle so that the spindle contacts only with the stop-plate and the washer. A clamp oft-he usual form engages the notch Specification of Letters Patent.

in the end of the s indle below the washer to hold the splndle in place. The washer 16 preferably is located in a recess inthe under side of the base, which recess is of greater depth than the thickness of the washer so that the fingers on the stop-plate can be long enough to accommodate the variations in the thickness of'the base-piece without projecting below the plane ofthe bottom of the base.
It is essential to the best construction of switches of thistype that the spindle shall have a firm bearing. Such a bearing cannot be provided in the base itself as the material from which the bases are usually madeis not suitable for this purpose. that metallic bearings for the'spindle have been provided, but of a more expensive and complicated construction than that herein shown.
It is understood that the structure illusto hold it in position and'a spindle extend ing through said base and supported by said plates.
2. An electric switch comprising a base,
stationary contacts thereon, a stop-plate located on the upper surface of said base and having fingers extending through said base, a washer located on the underside of said base and having notches engaging said fingel-s, said stop-plate and washer being centrally pierced, a spindle having its lower I am aware end located in the bearing formed by said stop-plate and washer, and movable contacts and a locking member mounted, on said spindle, the latter adapted to cooperate with said stop-plate.
