ATTACHMENT FOR THRESHING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25,1913.
Application filed May 11, 1912. Serial No. 696,731.
-To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN lV. GRIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abbottstown, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Threshing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to a new and useful attachment for threshing machines and more particularly to an endless conveyer for carrying the sheaf from the mow to a platform mounted upon a threshing machine for the purpose of feeding the grain to the same.
The primary object of the present invention is to construct a frame of an endless conveyer used for devices of this character which may be easily and readily adjusted to any desired length.
Other objects will appear hereinafter as the description continues.
lVith the above and other objects in view this invention consists primarily of two sections of a frame, telescopically secured together and an endless conveyer mounted thereon for the purpose specified.
This invention further consists of novel details of construction, combination, formation and arrangement of parts as will be apparent from the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved carrier as applied to a threshing machine; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinally extending section; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein I have illustrated a specific embodiment of the present invention.
the numerals 10 and 11 respectively indicate the telescopic sections of the frame. These sections being substantially semi-circular in cross section and the inner section 10 being slidably mounted upon the outer section 11. A
The outer section 11 has provided on each side thereof adjacent its marginal edges longitudinally extending slots 12 in which operate laterally extending lugs 13 m0unted adjacent the marginal edges of the inner section 10. The outer extremities of these lugs 13 are bent at right angles as at 14 and are provided with an adjustable screw 15 which engages the side of the outer member 11 for holding the sections in adjust-able positions. Adjacent the outer extremity of the inner section 10 and adjacent its marginal edges it is also provided with longitudinally extending slots 16 in which operate lugs 17 formed adjacent the outer end and on the inner face of the sect-ion ll. These lugs obviously provide means whereby the sec tions may be readily adjusted and also provide a substantial connection which will prevent the Sections from bending when they are adjusted at the full'length.
The outer extremities of each of the sections 10 and 11 are provided with brackets 18 in which are journaled sprocket wheels 19 over which passes an endless conveyer chain 20. A plurality of transversely extending blocks 21 are secured upon the end less conveyer 20 and spaced inwardly and have extending therefrom pins 22 for carrying the sheaf as it. isbeing carried to the plat-form of the threshing machine. The sprocket wheel 19 mounted on the outer casing 11 is keyed upon a transversely extending shaft 23 which is jo-urnaled upon the lower face of the said sections. The outer end of this shaft is provided with a gear wheel which may be connected to the threshing machine motor or any other suitable power as desired. It will be particularly noted that this endless conveyer is mounted within the center portions of the sections 10 and 11 and as the sections are semi-circular in cross section it will obviously permit larger bundles of grain to be placed upon the conveyer and the curved side portions of the sections will prevent any lateral movement of the bundles or prevent them from falling to one side of the conveyer.
A transversely extending support 24 is mounted on the outer section 11 adjacent the central portion thereof and has pivotally mounted thereon a cutting blade 25. A lug 26 is mounted upon the support 24 which will limit the downward movement of the cutting blade 25 but as the blade is pivotally mounted upon the support it can be raised to allow larger bundles to pass under the same. This cutting blade 25 is curved downwardly as shown and adapted to engage the bands for tying bundles together so that as the bundles pass under this cutting blade the bands will be severed thereby saving the operator the time of cutting these bands before the grain enters the feeder.
The ends of the conveyer chain are detachably secured together so as the frame is adjusted the additional portions of the chain may be secured to the ends of the conveyer so that the same may be also adjusted to fit the frame when adjusted to a greater length.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that I have constructed an adjustable conveyer for threshing machines which will be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, strong, durable and eflicient in use and one which may be adjusted to the desired length of the operator and it is to be further understood that other minor details of construction may be resorted to that come Within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In an endless conveyer, two sections one slidable upon the other, each of the said sections having longitudinally extending slots formed adjacent the marginal edges thereof, lugs extending from each of said sections and adapted to operate in said slots,
j, the outer ends of the lugs formed on one section being bent at right angles thereto and adjustable fastening means mounted within said angular portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In an endless conveyer, the combina tion of two semicircular sections adjustably mounted one upon the other, each of said sections having longitudinally extending slots formed therein and extending adjacent the outer extremity of each section, the in ner extremity of the outer section having inwardly projecting lugs adapted to operate within the slots formed within the inner section, the inner end of the inner section having a pair of laterally extending lugs formed upon each side thereof and adapted to operate Within the slots formed in the opposite section, and means mounted within the last mentioned lugs for adjustably fastening the said sections together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. GR-IM.
