Description

i D. WI-IITLOGK.` Y FEED WATER HEATER FOR STEAM BOILERS.
No. 105,39@ Y Pate-ntedJuly 12, 1870.
waited gaat @ident `DANIEL WHITLooK, V'or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 105,397, dated I n.13/ 12, 1870.
`The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the samt.
To whom Mandy concern.;
Be it known that I, DANIEL WHITLOCK, of Newark, 1nA the county of Essex, in` the State of New Jersey, have lnvented certain Improvements in Bed- Plates of Steam-Engines and Boilers, ofwhich the following is ai, specification.
In the drawingf Figure l is an upright sectional view of a boiler, with the bed-plate; i
Figure 2 is a top plan -v1cw of the upper side of the lower part of the bottom or bed-plate; and
Figure 3-is a reduced upright section of the bedplate. l V
The object of this inventionis to construct the bedplate of steam-boilers so that there shall be awaterspace therein, and with flanges and ings that support the boiler, outside jacket, and fire-box, whereby nues are formed in such `manner as 'that the products of combustionshall impinge upon and heat the water contained in such water-space in the bedplate, thus utilizing the heat in its passage around the boiler, -to heat the water in the water-space of the bed-plate before it is fed into the boiler.
A and'A form a cast-metal bed or base-plate for the boiler, and has therein a water-space, G, and
`upright flanges B B' and lugs or vflanges C, which support the outside 'jacket F, boiler E, and firebox D.
P is an opening for the adlnission of air to the furi nace, to supply the combustion.
u is a eheck-va1ve in pipe o, for the purpose of closing the communication between the water-space G in the bedplate andthe boiler, and for `regulating the amount of water passing from the water-space G into boiler E.
. In the water-space G of the bed-plate are supports a a, and `a central partition-plate, H; also, ap-4 ertures for thc insertion of inlet-pipe b and outletripe e l The top A of the base-plate forms the bottom of` the ash-box, where cinders and hot ashes are continually falling, whenever the tire is burning in the firebox.
The products of combustion, in'leaving the firechamber, impingeagainst the nuclei' side of the arch of the boiler, and are then deiiected down the annular flue L, in contact with the inside of the boiler, to the top A of the base-plate, when they rise through annular ue K, in contact with the outside of the boiler, and between thc boiler and jacket to the exiti e. I) Iiy this process the top A becomes highly heated, and thereby heats the water in space G, nearly to the temperature ofthe water in the boiler E, thusrequiring but little additional heat inthe boiler to forip working steam beneath it, as there is nothing but the water to communicate heat thereto.
lhe water-space G is always full of water, and
the water is continually moving, when the engiie- )um i is in motion. because the water which su lis-` the boiler hasto pass through the space G, before it can enter into the boiler E, by the mode of forcing t the water through pipes b and e into the boiler through space G. i
This space is so much larger than .the exit-pipe c,
that the water circulates slowly through it, and it is purposely so constructed that the water must circulat-e to all parts of .the space before it finally makes 'itsfexit through pipe o, as the supports a and parti .opening al, before it can approach exit-pipe c, which causes the water, in passing through the space G, to comel in Contact with al1 parts of the iuside ot' the bed-plate before leaving it, and by such contact the water becomes heated before it enters the boiler,
and thus Vutilizes the heat, to heat the water thatwould otherwise be lost in heating the bottoni-plate, and, at the same time, the waterin space Gr acts as a protection against conununieatiug fire from an over heated bed-plate.. Y
The supports within space G of the bed-plate A A cau be constructed in a variety ot' ways, in order to prolong the time ot'passiug the water through the space, as such supports` may be partitions, as shown in broken lines in iig. 2,. which willcause the water to pass alternately from the division-partition H to the outside of the space around the end of 4a partition, and then return again to the center divisionplate, and so continue until it passes the endv of partition I-1`,an'd traverses the partitions again in a zigzag course on the other side of the partition, to exitpipe c.
- I am aware that. water-spaces have been used in` the bed-plates of steam-boilers, previous to my iuvention, an'd I do not claim such water-space in the bed-plate of a steam-boiler, but confine my claim to invention to the construction ot' the bed-plate, to accommodate 'audmaintain the water-space therein, disclaimiug any construction where the bed-plate'isfa part of the boiler.
. Having thus described my invention, I
\V hat I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent is 1,.. The bed or base-plate A Aof steam-boiler,4 when' said base-plate is inade with water-space G,
either with er without the partition Hand supports l the manner above described, so that the products of ce a, and having apertures for water-pipes b and c, combustion shall pass down ue L, und impinge upon flanges B B', Which form the support for the outside the top A of the bed-plate, and rise in iue K, therejucket F and fire-box D, lugs or flange G that snpby heating the feed-water in space G, as herein (leport boiler E, and. thereby forming the annular scribed.
ilues K :md L, in the manne-r and for the purpose DANIEL WHITLOCK. described. Witnesses:
