CONTROL-VALVE.
a. iota.
Original application filed October 31, 1911, Serial No. 657,891. Divide-'1 anal this application filed April 2,
' To ciZZ whom 2'15 may concern:
meda and State of California, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Control-Valves, of which the fol-v lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to controlling valves used in connection with musical instruments of the pneumatically operated type, and is a divisional application divided from a former application bearing the Serial No. 657,891, filed (lot. 31, 1911.
The principal object ot the invention is to provide the valve with apeculiar type of sealing disk which is so constructed that the tlow of air will meet with the least resistance, thus causing a quick action when the valve is opened.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arran ements of arts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accent panying drawings, and specifically claimed. 'In the accompanying drawings, like charactors of reference several views, and :Figure l is a plan view of a vacuum trunk with the improved valves, a portion of the trunk being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the valve disks. Fig. {i is a sectional view through the same. Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the vacuum chest is provided with a bottom 10, sides 11 and 12, end 13, and top 14. An opening-15 is formed in the end 13 so that communication may be had with the suction bellows to form a vacuum inthe trunk. The side wall it is provided with a plurality of openings l6 which communicate with cells 18 formed in the bottom. Openings are formed through the bottom and all 12 and extend into the top 14: where hey communicate with openings 20 leading toenlarged open.- ings 21. A diaphragm 22 is placed over each from each of the diaphragms through one of the openings 21. Disks 24 and 25 are attached to the top let, the disl' 24 being at the inner end of the opening 21 and the disk indicate like parts in the-.
of the cells 18 and a shaft 23 extends Serial No. 587,969;
25 being;- at the outer end. Each of these disc 'u'ovide-zl with guide holes for the shaft andopi 2; to permit air to pass into the eular opening The shaft 23 lalOYltittl between the it ks and 25 with a E 'on to V illif a seat 27, a shoulder :16 .toriueil at the inner end of the seat. ient valve 29 is mounted upon the shaft 3;?lwlwecn the disks 2& and 25 and tits in the seat 27. The opening formed thro h tne'valve is of less diameter than the sha at the seat so that it is necessary to extend the valve slightly in order to til. it upon seat. This causes the valve to contract at'tcr being placed in the seat. and thus tightly held in place. -The pushed through the valve when the device is Ulltl'iitfitl. The valve is formed from a substanti: ly cylindrical piece of rubber which provided with the concaved faces 30 and the concaved sides 31 the concaved tar and side 11 "115; to "form the rounded edges 32. "llu edges 32 come in contact with the plat 24- and and form air tight joints. and. it should he noted that by having the edges 32 curved that the passage 01' air from the opening l through the opening; 2t into the vacuum chamber of the chest is not obstructed.
Vshcn'tliis device is in use vacuum is maintained in 16 by means of bleed hole 16' and upon opening of the hole in the tracker oar. air from the same. passes through the openin'r 16 into the opening 17 and from therce into the cell 18. The cell 18 is filled w 2 r and this raises the diathe shaft is moved, lifting the v c from contact with the disk 24 and brin n it into contact with the disk "his nu were the. oylenings formed in phragm. so that 2- on covers the openings in the th: enters through the openwe 1d mav pass around the valve. through has no sharp ml the air (hi-{molt Having thus described the invention, What is cl'eimed as new is A device of the character described 001D.- prising a chest provided with "openings leading through its Walls and coxninnnieating witlna cell and with an enlargedopening formed in alineinent with the cell, a
diaphragin extending across said cell, a
shaft extending from said diaphragm through said enlarged opening, disks secured t0 the wall of said chest at each end of said enlarged opening and provided with alinedl openings through which said shaft passes, and said shaft being provided with an annular groove positioned between said disks, a shoulder formed upon said shaft at the inner end of said groove, a valve mount ed upon said sha ft between .said disks and fitting in said groove, \said valve being formed from a substantially cylindrical block oflelastic material provided with concave valve faces and with a grooved edge meeting the concavevalve faces at curved ed 'es.
1 I n testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
