HINGE-BUTT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application filed May 4, 1912. Serial No. 695,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HENRY L. BRADLEY, deceased, formerly a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, (BESSIE LEE BRADLEY, executrix,) did invent a new and useful Improve ment in Hinge-Butts; and it is hereby declared that the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, is a full, Clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a face view of a hinge butt constructed in accordance with this invention, and shown in the open position. Fig. 2 a side view of the same, Closed. Fig. 3 an edge view. Fig. 4 an inside view of one of the leaves. Fig. 5 an .-inside view of the other leaf.
This invention relates to an improvement in hinge butts, the object being to produce the butts from sheet metal whereby the labor of mortising the butt in the amb and in the door will be reduced,a1id in which the strain will be partially taken from the screws; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out the invention, the butt, like usual butts, comprises two leaves. As herein shown, the left hand leaf consists of two arms 2, 3. These arms are struck from sheet-metal their inner ends being rolled to form knuckles 4,5, the ends of which are flared outward forming flanges 6. The right hand leaf comprises two arms 7, 8. These arms are duplicates of the arms 2, 3; that is, theupper arm 7 at the right is a duplicate of the lower arm 3 at the left; and the lower arm 3 at the left is a duplicate of the upper arm 2 at the right. These arms 7 and 8 are likewise formed with knuckles 9 and 10. The two arms 2 and 3 are connected together by a short plate 11 which may be riveted, brazed or otherwise secured to the arm so as to be firmly interlocked therewith; and the arms 7 and 8 are likewise connected by a bar or strap 12. The knuckles receive the usual pin 13 by which the two leaves are connected together, and at the bottom 'is the usual ornamental knob or acorn 14. It will be noted that the bar- 12 stands below the surface of the arms 7 and 8 and so that the'arms 2 and 3 when the butt is closed, will bear against this bar and bring the face of one leaf into line with the face of the other leaf. As before stated, these leaves are struck up from sheet metal and are formed with inwardly extending flanges 15, and the arms are provided with the usual screw holes 16 more or less in number. These flanges 15 being comparatively sharp owing to the fact that the leaves are formed from sheet metal, may readily be embedded in the door jamb and edge of the door, and thus avoid the necessity of mortising both the door and the door jamb. To facilitate mortising, however, when applied to hard woods the ends of the arms fonn segments of circles so that the ends of the mortise may be readily formed with an anger. ,The flanges strengthen the arms and by being embedded in the wood take a portion of the strainv which usually comes upon-the screws.
It is apparent, without illustrationfthat the leaves of the hinge might'be formed informed from a single piece of metal and the arms 7 and 8 from one piece .ofinetal; but
in applying the butts.
