J. A. COSTELLO.
(JAR ROOF.
APPLICATION FILED AUG, 26, 1912.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Invenzorr a M120 UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. COSTELLO, CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 'IO CLEVELAND CAR SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO. A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CAR-R OF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 26, 1912. Serial No. 717,038..
' a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CanRoot's; and I hereby. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in car-roofs, and pertains more especially to an improved carroof-construction comprising a trough extending transversely and and jarranged below the joint formed between two 'metal roofing-sheets wlnch extend over said trough and laterally of said quately obstruct thepassage of water to said trough from between the bottom of said cap and said roofing-sheets andrendcr flooding of saidtrough impossible, and to have the component parts of my improved construction so relatively shaped and arranged as to facilitate their manufacture and assemblage and permit expansion and tmntuwtion of the roofing-sheets.
Withthis object in view, and to the end ,of attaining any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and arrangement of 'parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a View, partly in section and partly in perspective, of a portion of a carroofembodying my invention.
Referring to said drawings, -'A indicates roof-boardsfwhich are su )ported in any approved manner from the lrame (not shown) of a car-roof embodying my invention. The
I application'ofsaid roof-boards to a car-roof frame'is too well known in the art to requireillustration and dQSCIIPtIOn in this specification.
Suffice it to state that said rootboa'rds areshown arranged longitudinallyjof the car-root. v
- 13 indicates a metal trough resting on' the roof-boards A and arranged transversely of the car-roof. The trough B forms a transverse member of the car-roof and is adapted to be secured in place at the ends (not shown),
Two metal roofing-sheets D and I) rest at 'opposite sides respectively of the trough B on the roof-boards A and extend laterally of and outwardly from opposite sides respectivel of said trough and also extend longitudinally of said trough.
Each roofing-sheet D at the adjacent side but externally of the trough B has a side member having an upright lower-portion d extending longitudinally of the trough B. Said lower portion d of said side member of each rooting-sheet is arranged opposite and spaced from the lower portion of the corresponding side member of the other roofingsheet. Said lower portions of said side members of the roofing-sheets areshown arranged at opposite sides respectively and externally of and spaced'from the trough B. Said side member of each roofing-sheet has an cgee-curved portion 5 which projects or extends laterally over the trough B toward and into contact with the corresponding ogec-curved portion 5 of the other roofingsheet. The laterally extending ogee-curved portion 5 of said side member of each roofing-sheet extends longitudinally of said side member and consequently longitudinally of the trough l5 and forms a trough 6 which depends into and extends longitudinally of the trough'B and is atlaptcdto conduct oil water received thereby. The illustrated troughs 6 of the roofing-sheets have their lower portions spaced apart, as at 7, and adjacent sides of said troughs G are extended upwardly, as at 8, above the passageways formed in and by said troughs, and the upward extensions 8 of said sides of said troughs abut and press laterally against to and drip from said joint. It will also Patented Feb. 18, 191.3.
and
' be observed that the relative arrangement of the parts hereinbefore described permit ex sheets longitudinally of the ear-roof without interfering with the joint formed between the upward extensions 8 of adjacent sides of the troughs 6 of the roofing-sheets.-
The trough B is shown arranged there fore between and spaced from the opposing sides of'the lower portions (Z of the aforesaid side members of the roofing-sheets, and a metal cap H, which is invertecl-U-shaped in cross-section, covers said side members and of course covers the ogee-curved and -trough-forming portions of said side members and overlaps and somewhat presses against the other sides of said lower p0r-- tions of said side members below said ogeecurved and trough-forming portions and between the latter and the lower ends of said side members of the roofing-sheets and holds said side members together at the joint formed between the upward extensions 8 of adjacent sides of the troughs 6 or said side members.
The cap H is provided at the bottom and externally with two laterally and outwardly projectingflanges h and h arranged at opposite sides respectively'of the cap and overlapping the bodies of the roofing-sheets without interfering with the expansion and contraction of said roofing-sheets.
Preferably the cap H has the lower por: tions of its sides diverging downwardly be low the joints formed between the cap and the aforesaid side members of the roofing-sheets, and the atoresaidlower ortions 4 of said side members of the roo lug-sheets diverge downwardly between and are spaced from the inner surfaces of the lower portions of the sides of the cap, and the spaces 10 formed at said surfaces between the cap and the roofing-sheets extend from the bottoms of the flanges of the cap upwardly toward the joints formed between the cap and the roofing-sheets and form passageways which extend longitudinally of the trough B and. are adapted to receive and conduct off water driven into said space'at the under sides of the flanges h of the cap. 1 7
By the construction hereinbefore described, it will be observed that a suitable joint i not only formed between the upward extensions 8 oi adj accnt sides of the troughs 6 of the roofing-sheets but between the aforcsaid side member of each roofing-sheet and the cap H below the ogee-curved and troughforming portion of said side member of said roofing-sheet, so that any water driven or forced into said cap at the bottom of the' tlanes::- o.t the cap and received by the passagewaysbr spaces 10 which are arranged below the joints formed between said cap and the roofingsheets shall encounter con.
" sideiableobstruetion before it-can'enter the trough 6, and the location of said troughs 6 above said. lastenentioned joints is not unimportant in permitting as little water as pos sible to have access to the joint formed. between the roofing-sheets. v 4
