Yful improvement in rotatory mechanisms more particularly to a form devised by me in which the movement o-f the rotator is controlled by a device which enhances the operative efficiency of the rotator.
The present invention consists in means for regulating the controlling device while the rotator is in operation so that the position of the rotator may be varied at will while in action.
In the annexed drawings: Figure 1 repre sents'the outside view of a controller with the invention attached. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the rotator-y mechanism with the invention attached.
In these drawings: The numerals 1 and 2 indicate the supporting frames to the tops 3 and 4 of which the device is secured between the inner faces 5 and G, and in these tops is held the rotator shaft. Loose upon this rotator shaft are placed the controllers 7 and 8. These controllers are duplicates having flat backs 9 and 10 and consist of two portions 11 and 12 which are substantially vertical with their inner' faces parallel and the portions 13 and 141 having faces flaring outwardly from the other faces; the controllers being placed so as to have an outward flare. The inner faces of these controllers 7 and 8 are provided with guide channels 15, in the present instance made by grooves in the controllers partially covered by plates 16 and 17 with spaces between them. These guide channels 15 are continuous, but have not the same curvature their entire length, being in two portions. The degree of curvature of the portions 18 in the outwardly flaring portions of the controllers differs materially from the degree of curvature of the other portions 19 of the guide channels.
Between the controllers 7 and 8 there is rigidly keyed to the rotator shaft a hub 20 from which. project radial arms 21, provided with 'hinge loops 22, 23, 24, the loop 22 being near the end 25 of the arm 21, and the other two near the hub 20. To these loops 22, 23, 24 are held the blades 26 arranged in pairs. Connected to and projecting from the lower ends 31 of bars 30 of these blades 2G are guide arnis 32 at. an angle to the blades and having outer ends 33 passing into the channels 15 and carrying suitable travelers 34; in said channels 15.
So far as described the present device is similar to that set forth in my patent, August 13, 1912, Number 1,035,377. In such a device as the rotator is turned, the concauscs the guide arms 32 to move the blades 2G from and to cach other thus opening and closing the blades. Also the difference in curvature of the portions 18 and 19 of channel l5 causes the blades to remain open a portion of the revolution of the rotator, the duration of such open position being governed by the degree and length of the curvature in the portion 18. All this is set forth in my former application.
The object of the present invention is to supply a regulator so that the controllers may be put in different positions and their' location be varied. In the drawings is shown one way of doing this. Secured to the backs 9 and 10 of the cont-rollers 7 and 8 are suitable gear wheels 37 and 37 through which the rotator shaft loosely passes. Mcshing with the teeth 38 and 38 of these gear wheels 37 and 37 are the worm gears 39 of shafts 40, held in bearings l1 and 42 of the supporting frames 1 and 2. On the cnds 43 and 44 of the shafts l0 are beveled wheels 45 and 11G which mesh with corresponding beveled wheels 417 and 4-8 on shaft 49. With such a regulating device the controllers may be readily placed in any position while the device is in operation. By turning the shaft 19 movement is given through the shafts 40 and worm gears to the controllers 7 and 8 turning them in either direction desired. Such a construction is of peculiar' advantage when the device is used as a motor for an aeroplane. 1Whatever may be the position of the aeroplane, the controllers by means of the regulator may be so varied as that the blades shall be in the desired position for their greatest efficiency to be developed.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A rotator provided with blades adapted to be opened, held open and closed and having a shaft; two controllers for opening, holding open and closing said blades, such struction and position of the controllers' controller on each side of the blades; gear Wheels attached to said controllers; and engaging these gear Wheels, and other gear Wheels provided With means for turning them at the same time.
