MACHINE ron nnrosITINe METALLIC LEAF UPON noox-oovnns on. THE
Application filed February 28., 1912. 7 Serial No. 880,527.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Feb.
I T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SMITH, acitizen of the United States, residing at Oak Lawn, in the State of Rhodelsland, have invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Machines for Depositing Metallic Leaf upon Book-Covers or the Like, ofwhich the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved machine adapted for the automatic'de osit of gold leaf upon bookcovers or the 11 e, preparatory to the operation thereon of the stamping press; and it consists in the 1mproved construction of the machine, whereby this object is rapidly accomplished.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 represents a top view. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3, 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a forward end view. I
In the drawing, A represents the bed plate upon which is secured the forwardly projecting bracket B, which serves to support the spindle C; and also the forwardly projectin bracket D, which serves to support the ta e-up roll E, which is driven from the rotary feed roll F, by means of the pulleys G and H, and the band I. Upon the spindle C is placed the sleeve J, which is secured in any desired position on the said spindle by means of the set screw 7*, and to the said sleeve is secured the removable package roll holder L by means of a dove-tailed slot a on the sleeve, which receives a dove-tailed projection 6 upon the base of the said packageroll holder, the said parts being held together by means of the button a. The deliv ering roller M for the unwinding package roll 0, is arranged to bear upon the upper surface of the article'which is to be ornamented, which article passes over the said feed roll F and under the said delivering roller. The rear side of the sleeve J is provided with an'upwardly extending arm d, and in the slot 6 of the bracket B, is placed the adjustable stud f which forms a stop for the downward movement of the' delivering roller M, and the said delivering roller is held out of contact with the article to be ornamented, whenever required,by means of the pawl g which is made to engage with the base it of the projectin arm a, of the frame, which thus holds bac the arm 01, of the sleeve J, and supports'the delivering'roller M in its elevated position.
'The spindle C is provided with the attached arm 3/, upon which is placed the adjustable weight g, which servestocause the proper degree of pressure between the deliv-v ering roller M, and the article to be ornamented.
The take-up roll E serves to take up the paper strip 5; and remove it from the machine after the metallic leaf has been deposited therefrom, as. shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The pressure roller is which bears upon the said p aper strip is made adjustable upon a shaft loosely held in the arms 1, Z, which are pivoted to the frame of the machine at the standards m, m. The paper strip j is conveyed away from the take-up roll E, by means of the inclined table 0. At the rear side of the'bed A is placed-the adjustable guide a, along which the edge ofthe book cover or other article to be ornamented is moved by the action of the" feed roll F, to which is attached the driving pulley N.
I claim as my invention: y Y 1. In a machine ofthe character'rdescribed,
the combination of a driven feed roll, means for supporting. a package roll of metallic leaf, a delivering roller for depositing the metallic leaf upon the surface of the said article when it is being assed between the said feed roll and the elivering roller, a driven take-up'r'oll for removing the aper strip after the metallic leaf has beeneposited therefrom, and a pressure roll for holding the paper stripiagainst the surface of the take-up roll. I i
2. In a machine of the-character described,
so, i
' the combination of: a-driven feed roll, means f for holding a package roll of metallic leaf 7 l for unwinding movement, a delivering roller actuated by contact with the article to b ornamented when passing between the feed roll and the delivering roller. and any ad-- I justable stop for controlling the vertical position of the said delivering roller.
3. In a machine of the character described, spindle, a.
the combination of-a supportin sleeve held upon the said spind e, and pro- I vided with a dovetailed socket, with a package-roll and delivering roll holder, provided witllg a dovetailed projectionheld inthe said soc et.
