JOHN RAPHAEL ROGERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, .ASSIGNOR TO MERGENTHALER LINQTYPE COMPANY, CORPORATION'OF NEWlYORK.
TYPOGRAPHICAL Macnm.
To all whom tmay concern.'
Be. it known` that I, JOHN RABHaEL Booms', a-.citizn of the United States, and a resident 'of Brooklyn, countyof Kings, andState of `New York, have invented la new `and usefulv goverment in Typographical Machines, o -which thefollowing 1s a specication. 4
A ,My invention relates tofty chimes, and more particular yto that class thereofknown to the public under the name ".Linotypef, as represented for instance in U, S. -Letters Patent", to O. Mergenthaler, No.1436,5;32. In thisl machine, the composed line .of matrices. is presented by the first elevater to a slotted mold wherein the slug or linotype is cast; When the line is brought into engagement with theunold so as-to ographicalmaclose' one side thereof, the1 mouthf-o'f the to inject the metal into the mold and against.
riees.
-pot containing vthe molten metal ismoved against its opposite side, and the pump afcts the 4line of intaglio characters in the mat- In normal practice the pump is lforcedto its active or operative position by a powerful spring and is returned to its retracted or inoperative position by a cam which moves it in theopposite direction, the
cam being f rmed with a depressedsurface which pe its the spring to act in thegmanner'described. Ordinarily this Adepression llas is shaped with a. more or lessl gradually descending surface,
so as to permit the steady 'and uniform `operation of the pump and in- .jectign'iof vthe ty pe metal Such a formation of ,f thevgparts 1s found to be satisfactory andecient in ordinary practice and particularly when the matrix charactersl are of the usual size and shape. When, however, matrices are employedwhich contain deeper cavities, or where, as in the case of over it is 'necessary that the Ia corner in -the'matrix, the forceof the "pumkp must be proportionately -increased." In such circumstances, it has been `found desirable that it he given a rapid and abrupt `action asdistinguished froin the gradual equip themachine' with'parts which are capable of giving either action when desired, I preferably eru'ip the cam, having the jgradadditional means which may vvloe thrown into act-ion at wi11,so that the roller on the, pump 1out departing 4adjusting devices lfor the 3-3 of Fig. 1, and the ,in section on the line 2-2 and uniform operation. previously mentioned. In order 4to ing 'or sloping surface, withl 1l1a`ry means to the ,bottom of the depression instead of passing down more gently along the side' thereof.A I' have found it desirable in the equipment of such a. machine to provide.l connections whereby either arran ment may be placed in o rative condition at will 4from the front o the machine and without the operator leaving his seat; and I thus dispense with the necessity of his leaving his place and -oing to the rear of the machine to make t e required adjustment..
I have herein shown my invention in pre ferred form, but obviously many changes and variations may be made therein with from its spirit and generally speaking, I desire it -to be understood that I do not limit myself to any s ecic form or embodiment except in so ar as such .limitations arev specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective viewof certain portions of a linotype machine, indicatingthe relative positions of the first elevator, mold, and pot, as well as of the pump and its actuating-mechanism; Fig. 2 .is aplan view of the pump operating means, the frame being. in section on the line pump lever being of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 andv 4 are detached detail views, illustrat ing different positions of some of the parts; Fig. 5 is a side view'of the pum operat ing means, with the pot in' vertica and Fig. 6 is a detached side View of the purilpcam and the parts coperatingtherewit Referring to' the drawings, Fi 1 shows the irstgelevatorl A, mold wheel andpot C, in theircasting relations. The pump rod D (see 'also Fig. 5) is connected to' the arm E of the usual operating lever, which is normally pressed downward by the powerful spring The other arm -E2 ,of the lever is provided with the cam roller .E1 ,in engf'- ment with the periphery of the cam G. e cam is provided with the operating-depression H, which, as will be seen from the drawings, is formedwith sloping sides, so that in normal operation the roller .Elwill descend uniformly and gradually tothe bottom of the depression H, thus permitti spring F to operate the. pump rod soies .t0 inject the mow metal inl regular and uniform manne 'J Also com??? ath@ speemcauon or Lettera Patent. A 40 i the machine.l
cam G, at the sidethereof, is the supplemental camlpiece J, which coperates with the pivoted member Kon the arm E2, when it is desired to actuate the pump in a more violent or abrupt manner. The piece K is mounted in a recess formed in the-arm E2 and is connectedl to the rock-shaft K1 suitably journaled therein, it beingl located in "suitable proximity to the'cam piece J on the cam G. When the piece K is adjusted to operative position,'and because of the rotasuring its penetration to all partsof the 'it clearsy the projectin the bottom y of employment of adjusting means w I piece K may be brought to o erative or 1natt-ach an arm L whereupon the roller -inetal from the pot into. the mold, andinmoldv andof the matricesnnv engagement lates the ierebythe Myl present invention contem this end-I to the opposite end of the operative position at will, ant to i rock-shaft K1, which arm is acted upon by suitable connectingv devices extending to the front of the machine. For this purpose, in my preferred form, I employ a lever M pivoted at M1 to the framework, o-ne arm of which engages the arm of which is acted upon by a lever N pivoted at N1 to the frame' and extending to the front of the machine, where it vis provided' with a handle O in convenient proximity to the operator, so `that it may be manipulatcd'by him without leaving his place at When the handle O is in the position shwn in ilfig. 2, the piece K is in its operative posit1onas indicated in Figs.
1, 2, 5. andG. The piece Kv then contacts with the cam piece J until it clears the projectin corner J1 thereof, thus allowing the roller u* to dro abruptly tothe bottomof the depression I. When the handle O is lshifted in the direction ofthe arrow in Fig.
2, the lever M is moved in the'di'rection of the arrows in Figs. 2 and 3, and acting on' the arm L and rock-Shaft. K- the piece K is turned fromA the position s own in Fig.
.3 to its inoperative position 'as shown 1n- Fig. 4. When thus adjusted, the roller E1 acts in the usual manner and descends easily 'depression along the gradually sloping side of'the cam 1I. 1t will be seen'that I have thus provided means whereby the character L, and the other arm and force of the metalvinjection may be.
varied at will and with the least possible inconvenience and loss of time.
Having -thus described my invention, its
constructlonand mode of operation, what I.. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a typographical machine comprising casting mechanism, the combination of a pump and a plurality of actuating means therefor, with devices whereby the selected actuating means may at will. l l
2. In a typographical machine comprisin casting mechanism, the combination pump operating means including a `plurality of sets of actuating parts, with means whereby any selected set of the said parts may be thrown int action at will. l
3. In a typographical machine comprising casting mechanism, Athe combination pump operating means including a cam provided with a plurality of actuating members, with means whereby any selected one of said members may be thrown into action at will. 4. In a typographical machine comprising casting mechanism, the combination o pump operating means, including an actuatlng lever and operating means therefor, the
vsaid lever and operating means being p rovided with a 'plurality of sets of co-actlnv elements, with meanswhereby any selecte set of said co-acting elements may be thrown into action at will.
5. In a typographicalmachine comprisin casting' mechanism, the combination o pump operating means, including a lever andan actuating cam therefor, the said cam being provided with a plurality of cam faces, and the said lever being provided with a corresponding plurality of co-actin elements, with means whereby any selecte one of lsaid elements may be tirown into action at will. i Y
6. In a typographical machine comprisin casting mechanism, the combination o pump actuatinnr means, including the lever cam roller 1, and part K, and the cam G provided with the supplemental cam piece J, with means whereby either the roller E1 'or part K may -be brought into operative relation respectively' to tie cam lGr or cam piece J at will.
KIn testimon whereof, I hereunto set my be thrown into`action' hand this 24t day of July, 1911, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
A 'JOHN RAPHAEL ROGERS.
