ana, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Gathering Refuse, of whichthe following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device which is adapted to be used for the gathering of refuse for the purpose of destroying or otherwise disposing of the same. I

My device is designed particularly for use in gathering or collecting" the fallen blossoms, squares and bolls of cotton in cotton fields where the boll weevil is present.

Itis known to those who are familiar with the cotton growing,- indus zhat in certain parts of the South the hon. weevil has made its appearance and whenever attacks the blossoms, squares, and bolls the latter fall to the ground. lt is desirable that. such fallen parts should be collected togetherand destroyed by burning or in some other manner for the purpose of destroying a nd eating the boll w The device invented by me and which forms the sub} C4: of this application has been designed and adapted for use in collecting such fallen parts oil the cotton plant, but as already indicated it may be employed for other analogous purposes and uses.

In order my invention may be more readily comprehended and its uses and advantages be more apparent, I have illustrated one form of aconvenient embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, but it will be understood that changes in the details of construction within the scop of the claims may be made without de arting front my invention.

For the purpose of holding the said pins to a certain extent against bending, I provide a combined guard or stay and cleaner or stripper 12, which is bent or turned in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 ands of the drawings so that it forms a shallow inverted cone, the apex of which is located at its center and is substantially coincident with the central pin of the device. In order that the sleeve 19 may be held in the position indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings in which the cleaner or stripper 12 is located at a point adjacent to the base 2, I have provided a bent spring 20 bowed in the manner indicated in Fig. 1 which spring operates to prevent the sleeve 19 from slidingdown upon the handle or to ward the base 2.

In the use of my device for the purpose 1 of collecting refuse matter of any kind or character, the stripper or cleaner 12 should be held at such distance upwardly from the points of the pins as may be desired. lhe

material to be gathered up or collected is pierced by the'said pins and when they are full may be carried to some central point and placed in .a pile or heap, the said materialbeing stripped from the said pins by causing relative movement between the cleaner or stripper l2 and the pins so as to cause these parts to occupy relative positions substantially as shown inFig. 4. of

the drawings in which the cleaner or stripper plate 12 is located adjacent to the outer ends of the pins.

When the part 12 is moved into the posi sesame the center toward the outer edge of the group,a base or support to which the said pointed devices are secured, a handle secured to the said base or support, a bent plate having perforations through which the said pointed devices pass, the said plate being of cone shape, a longitudinally movahlemember supported upon the said handle and means having connection with the said longitudinally movable member and the said cone-shaped plate whereby move ment of'the latter is caused by movement of the said member on the said handle.

2. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a handle having a plate secured to the lower end thereof, said plate having radially ext-ending slots therein, piercing fingers or prongs secured to said plate, a stripping plate having perforations therein through which the said piercing fingers or prongs extend, a sleeve slidably secured upon said handle, links connected to the lower edge of said sleeve and to the outer edge of said stripping plate, the said links causing longitudinal movement of the said stripping plate" on the said piercing fingers or rongs as the said sleeve is moved back and orth upon the handle and the said links moving in and out of the said slots, and

a flat spring secured upon the side of said handle and adapted to exert pressure against the said sleeve for the purpose stated.
