STAMP-CANQELING. MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 12, 1911 Serial No. 643,676.
tain new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Canceling Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to letter canceling machines and more especially to an arrangement thereof wherebv'little power is required to operate the machine which ispositive and simple of construction.
The invention. consists .n the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view with parts removed of a letter canceling 1nachine that embodies featrures of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through the machine; Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section through the machine; Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation, partially in section of a part of the machine; and Fig. 5 is a View in end elevation of part of a drum showing a modification of the latter.
Referring to the drawings, a hollow stationary shaft 1 is connected to an exhaust pipe 2 at one end and an air pipe 3 at the other. The shaft is mounted in a table 28 and a drum is iournaled thereon to turn through a suitable. opening in the table. Preferably the drum is made in two sections one of which 4 is provided with suction ports 5 and carries cancel stamps 6 ad jacent the ports, the stamps being reniovably secured as by insertion in dove-tail or undercut slots. At the point'wbere the ports pass the table top a pair of cut off plates 7 are supported. by means of a yoke 8 made fast to the shaft 1, the latter havinga plurality of openings 9 within the drum. A pair of idler pulleys 10 adjacent the drum carry an endless belt 11 of suitable material which extends around the periphery of the drum between the cut-0d plates 7 below the surface of the table so as to seal the ports 5.
as they swing below the table. An inking roll 12 is placed adjacent the drum to con;
tact with the stamps thereon as the latter pass up through the table. A cleaning roll 13 is in running contact with the belt 11 roll 15 to'force letters held by the suction. of the ports against the stamps. The countcrshaft may be "driven by any suitable means, as for example, a main pulley 1.6 and a belt 17 passing over an upperidler 18 and .under a drive pulley 20 on the counter shaft.
A guide block 21 is placed on the table adjacent the drum and over the inking roll 12. A discharge nozzle 22 is adapted to direct a blast of air from any source of supply against letters placed on edge and moved along the guide block toward the drum, the nozzle being so disposed that the ai; blast separates each letter of the stack as it in.
turn approaches the drum, from the precedmg letter so that it is readily picked updoy the suction through the port of the drum and carried around under the presser roll. A stripper plate 23 removes the letters from page of the ports complete, the'plates and belt or the segment making only a partial closure, so that there is some leakage but this is off-set by the fact that the c t-ofi's do not frictionally engage the drum and so the power-required to operate the device as a whole is very slight.
The construction of the drum in two sections admits of its ready inspection while the running parts are "few in number and when once adjusted the niaehine'does its work without further attention.
Obviously, changes in the details of con struction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish t-o'limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I'claim ist- 1; A letter canceling machine comprising a table, a hollow shaft secured across an opening therein and provided with lateral apertures, a closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the apertures :provided with peripheral suction ports, stamping means on the drum periphery adjacent the ports, means for pressing letters held by the suction of Patented Feb. 18,1913.-
the ports ing on the drum against the stampmeans, and means fqrshuttingolf the ports during the time they are passing below the plane of the table.
. 2. A letter canceling machine comprising atable,'ahollow shaft with lateral openings journaled'across an opening in the table, a'
I closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the periphery ad acent the opening provided with suction ports through its periphery,
' a table, a hollowshaft with lateral openings secured across an opening in the table, a
closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the apertures and provided with suction ports in its periphery, means secured on the shaft within the drum for shutting 01f the ports during the time they are passing below the plane of the table, stamping means on the drum periphery adjacent the ports,
means for pressing letters held by the suction of the ports on the, periphery against the stamping means, and operating mechanism for the drum.
4:. A letter canceling machine comprising a table, a hollow shaft with lateral openings secured across an opening in the table, a closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the openings,
adapted to shut off the'ports while they are passing below the plane of the table, and means for-stamping letters as they are held against the periphery of the drum by the v suction of the ports.
5. A letter canceling machine comprising a table,-a hollow shaft with lateral openings secured across an opening in the table, a closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the openings thereof provided with suction ports through its periphery, a segmental cut ofi plate mounted on the shaft within the drum for shutting ofi the ports while they are passing below the plane of the table, pneumatic meansfor forcing letters on the table into the range of action of the suction ports, and stamping means for impressing letters held against the drum periphery by the suctionpf the ports.
6. A letter canceling machine comprising a table, a hollow shaft with lateral openings secured across an opening in the table, a
off plate mounted on closed drum rotatable on the inner peripheral face a segmental cut off platemounted on the shaft within the drum and closed drum rotatable on the shaft around the openings thereof provided with suction ports through its periphery, a segmental cut the shaft within the drum for shutting off the ports while they are passing below the plane of the table, pneumatic means for forcing letters on the table into the range of action ,of the suction ports, stamping means on the drum periphery adjacent the suction ports, a pressing roll for forcing letters held on the drum by the suction of the ports against the stem ing means, and means for rotating the rum and presser roll.
7. A letter canceling machine comprising a table, a hollow shaft with lateral openings secured across an 'opening in the table, a the shaft around the openings provided with peripheral suction ports," stamping plates detachably se-- cured on the periphery adjacent the ports, a segmental cut-ofi'. plate secured on the shaft in substantially sliding contact with of the drum for shuttingolf the ports while they are passing below the plane of the table, a pressing rol in substantially rolling contact with the drum for forcing letters held against the periphery by the suction of the ports against the stamping plate, and means for operating the drum-and roll.
8. A letter canceling machine comprising a table, avhollow shaft with lateral openings secured across ano'pening in the'table, a closed drum rotatable on the shaft the openings provided with peripheral suction ports, stamping plates detachably searound cured on the periphery adjacent the ports,
a segmental cut off plate secured on the shaft in substantially sliding contact with the inner peripheral face of the drum for shutting off the ports while they are passin below the plane of the table, a pressing rol in substantially rolling contact with the drum for forcing letters heldagainst the periphery by the suction of the ports against ,the stamping plate, pneumatic means on the table for advancing letters on the table into the range of action of the suction ports, an inking roll for the stamping plates, and means for rotating the drum and roll.
In testimony whereof I afilx my in presence of two witne'sses.
LOUIS BLESSING.
