Be it known that I, TIMOTHY Stemma' a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Three-`Way Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to three-way valves, and particularly those used in connection with pumps at a point, above the cylinders, where the water is diverted to a trough or tank or other receptacle.
The object of my invention is to provide a sitable packing for the part of the valve engaging the inner circumference of the central chamber of Said casingand to so construct the retaining or carrying devices for the packing o'r shoe thereof that the means for keeping the latter yieldingly pressing outward against said shell, that it will not bind nor depend upon the water pressure back of it to make a water-tightl connection with the openings of the pipe stubs which it is adapted to close. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter `fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

`Referring to the drawings, A represents the/central cylindrical chamber of the T- shaped casing of my invention t-he axis of which is horizontal and closed at one end a, and structurally open at the other. The open end is interiorly screw-threaded and engaged and closed by the threaded flange l) of a suitable head B, and the center of this head has a suitable'bearing c, thatl alines with hearing c in the opposite closed end of the said chamber, for the journals of the valve-spindle C. The inner circumference of this chamber A, is bored out smooth, and the, axes of its alining vertical stubs (.7, (Land its horizontal stub c intersect the center of length of the horizontal axis of the same. The valve-spindle C between its journals is made into a substantially O-shaped frame F, one side z. of which is practically parallel to the axis of the spindle. At about its center of length the sides of this frame F, are provided with transverse openings; the side thereof, preferably, having a rectangillar openingand the opposite side having a circular opening alining therewith. These openings guide the stem I of a segmental plate J: the square part of said stem being. preferably. thicker than the remainder of its length and adapted to lit and slide in the square opening in side zY and the cylindrical part of the stem extending Yinto and having slidingr engagement in the round opening in the opposite side of the frame F. A coil expansion-spring K surrounds the stem between the sides of frame F, and presses the segmental plate J radially outward. Now, this segmental plate, preferably, corresponds in length to frame F, and its segmental width corresponds to the ldiameter of the openings leading from the bore of the chamber A, into the alining stubs of the casing. This plate is, preferably, rectangular and its edges are correspondingly 'flanged outward and form the confines of a seat lc, for a correspondingly rect the wat/er up through the lower alining' stub and out through the horizontal stub, and when at the limit of its downward 1. A three-way valve comprising a suitf, able T-shaped casing having a central chamber, and three stubs the intermediate one of which has a'restricted opening' communi'- cating therewith, and a suitable closure for said opening preventin back How, of a valve-spindle journaled 1nthe ends of said chamber, a valve having a stem j ournaled in and adapted to move in transverse bearings in said spindle, a shoe, a holder on the outer end of said stem adjacent the inside wall of said chamber between which and the wall of said chamber said shoe is seated, and means engaging said stem and spindle for pressing the former radiallyT outward.

In la three-way valve, the combination with a T-shaped casing having a central chamber, and three stubs the intermediate one of which has a restricted opening communicating therewith, a gland-nut screwed into said intermediate stub, a flap-valve clamped in place by said gland-nut to pro-l vide a` suitable closure lfor said restricted opening preventing back flow into Said chamber, of a valve-spindle journaled in the ends of said chamber and comprising an O- shaped frame between its journals, a transaxial valvestelnguided in transverse openings in opposite sides of said frame, a coil spring surrounding said stem between said sides and normally pressing said stem outward yieldingly agalnst the inner circum- -V ference of said chamber, a Valve comprising a plate on the outer end of said stem, and a shoe seated or retained against the outer surface of said plate.
