To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK Horn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waseca, in the county of W aseca, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Station-Indicators; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to an in station indicators.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an indicator adapted to be located in raiway or street cars and to be actuated improvement by the conductor or other operator.
Another objectof the invention is to provide an indicator for the purpose described which includes a novel stepby step mechanism adapted to actuate a sign-carrying web so that the names of streets may be successively displayed. y
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a novel mechanism of the character described, in which there is provided a novel means for rewinding the web in. the reverse direction and in a step by 'step mailner,
whereby the same indicator may be employed while the car is going in either direction.
v A still further object of the invention is to provide an indicator of the character described, which is extremely simple "in construction, being composed of a minimum number of parts, and is therefore cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the construct-ion and novel combination 'of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that variouschanges in the form, proportion, size and minor details .of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to withis a vertical sectional view taken on the 5-5 of Fig.3, Fig.6 is. an enlarged elevation of the step by step mechanism, showing the parts thereof in their inoperative positions, Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the parts in their operative positions, Fig. 8 is a detail bottom plan view, showing the rereversing lever and rack, Fig. 9 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. Referring to the .drawings,-the invention v comprises a casing consisting of side walls 55, a too 6 and a bottom 7. Secured to the front edges of the casing is a. frame 8 in which is mounted in the usual manner a pane 9 of glass or other suitable transparent material. This glass is darkened at its upper and lower portions to form a transparent central strip 10 through which the name of the street may be viewed, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
J ournaled in the side walls of the casing are spaced upper and lower rollers 11 and 12 respectively, the upper roller being a spring roller of the ordinary type. Secured to the rollers is a web 13 having a plurality of street indications 14: formed thereon. The lower roller is pr vided with a pair of trunnions 15 and 1 respectively, which rejectthrough the walls of the casing. mounted on the first mentioned trunnion is a pulley l7, and mounted upon one of the trunnions 18 of the upper roller and in alinement with the said pulley 17, is a second pulley 19. These pulleys are connected by a belt .20,
and associated with the lower or first men tioned pulley is a key 21 by means of which the rollersand consequently the web may be wound in either direction;
Secured to the frame 8 and extending late'rally therefrom is a frame 22, said frame being connected by clips 2323. Mounted within this frame is a panic 2 1 of glass or other transparent material, and behind the glass is located a sign for indicating transfer points to the passengerson the car.
In order to actuate the web in a manner to successively position thenames of the streets in front of the sign opening 10 above described, the following mechanism is employed: Mounted upon the trunnion 16 of the lower roller is a ratchet wheel consistin of a disk 26. This disk is formed with plurality of spaced openingsarranged in close proximity to the periphery thereof, and
disposed within these openings and projecting on either side of the disk are pins 27. Associated with the outer ends of each pin is a nut 28, and with the inner end is associated a nut 29 having a peripheral groove 30.
Secured to the adjacent side wall 5 of the casing by means of screws 31-31 is a brake consisting of a pair of depending arms 32-32, the lower or free ends thereof being outwardly bent to form feet 33-33. I These arms are disposed on opposite sides of the disk in a manner to simultaneously engage in the grooves of opposite pairs of nuts 29.
'In order to yieldingly hold these arms in such an engagement and thereby prevent the movement of the web, there is provided a U- shaped spring 34 having openings 35-35 respectively formed at its free ends for receiving the feet 33 of said arms 32.
In order for the conductor or other -op erator at the rear of the car to operate this T mechanism, there is mounted upon the side wall above the disk, a bracket36, and ivotally connected to this bracket, as at 3 is a lever 38. The free end of the lever is guided between a block 39 and a strip 40.
. Connected to the freeend of the lever is a cord 41, which is adapted to be trained over pulleys carried by the car, not shown. In

.of the casing below the lever 38 and above order to normally hold the lever in its down position, there is provided a coil sprin 42, one end thereof being suitably connecte to the frame and the other end to the free end of the said lever. Centrally formed on the lever is a depending ear 44, and secured to said ear is a pivot pin 45. Fulverted U- haped double pull-pawl 46,'the free ends thereof being inwardly bent to form hooks 47-47, one of said hooks being adapted to successively engage thescrews 27, and thereby rotate the rolls in one direction, andconsequently the web, upon upward pull of said lever by the cord 41.
When it is desired to actuate the rolls in the opposite direction to rewind the web, there is provided a novel mechanism for shifting the hooks 47 of the double pullpawl 46, whereby the other of said hooks 47 is adapted to successively engage the screws 27 on the opposite side of the first mentioned hook. Secured to the side wall the ratchet wheel is a pair of spaced brackets 48 48. Secured to the outer ends of these brackets arespaced slide-bars 49-49, said bars being disposed on opposite sides of Mounted upon said bars for slidable movement is a pushplate 50. This plate is positioned upon the bars intermediate the legs of the said pawl 46, and is of a length to engage the same. This plate is formed of metal,.and has its ends respectively provided with eyes 51 in which the slide-bars49 are disposed. Se-
cured to the side wall of the casing and preferably to the right of the ratchet is a pair of spaced upper and lower bearings 5253 in which is rotatably mounted a rock shaft 54, which terminates at its upper end in a rocker arm 55. This rocker arm is connect d to one end of a link 56, the other end of e link being connected to the push-plate 50. In order to rotate the rock shaft, there is rovided at its lower end a handle 57 and this handle is adapted to engage within any one of, the notches 58 formed in a rack plate 59 which is carried by said casing. By this means it willbe observed that when the handle is rotated, the push-plate 51 can be shifted in either direction, and as a result,
the double pull-pawl 46 will be swung upon its pivot pin 45 in a manner to permit of either hook 47 engaging the screws 27 to thereby actuate the said rolls and consequently the Web.
Associated with that side ofthe casing to which the above described mechanism is attached, is a cover 60 and this cover is normally held closed by means of a book 61.
It is to be noted that one end of the s ring in the roller 11 is secured to the shaft 18, while. the other end is secured to the roller. It will thus be observed that the belt 20 is employed to retain the web 13 taut .while being shiftedin either direction. As the belt unwinds from the upper roll 19 and winds upon the lower roll, the web is unwinding from the lower roll and winding upon the upperroll.

In a station indicator, the combination v with a casing, of a pair of rolls journaled therein, a web trained over said rolls, a belt connecting said rolls, a disk carried by one ofthe rolls, a series of pins projecting laterally from the disk, a lever fulcrumed to the casing above the disk, a double pull-pawl pivoted to the lever for successively engaging the pins on either side of the disk, a brake engageable with the pins for. successively holding the disk against rotation after the release of the pawl from the pins, operating means connected to said lever, spaced slide bars supported by the easing and disposed on opposite ,sides of the I pull-pawl, a push plate slidably mounted on said bars and disposed between the pawls, and meansfor slidingsaid plate to reverse said pawls.

In a station indicator, the combination with a casing, of a pair of rolls journaled therein, a web trained over said rolls, a belt conneetin said rolls, a disk carried by one of the re ing laterally from the disk, a lever fulcrumed to the casing above the disk, a double pull-pawl pivoted to the lever for successively engaging the pins on either side of the disk, a bra e engageable with the pins s, a series of pins projectfor successively holding the disk against rotation after the release of the pawl from the pins, operating means connected. to said lever, spaced slide bars supported by the easing'and disposed on opposite sides of the pull-pawl, a push plate slidably mounted on said bars and disposed between the 'pawls, a rock-shaft supported by the-casing, a rockerarm connected to said shaft, a crank pivotally connected to the push plate and the rocker-arm, a handle connected to the rockfor holding'the same in either of itsadjust-Y ed positions.
