Patented Feb 18, 1913. 1912. Serial No. B90 539 flows '2' r? m (112/ omrcem known that We, THOMAS M. Gimme Oils 0. PlEGG-ELIEN citizens of the es" residing at Webster, in the r. may and State of South Dakota, invented certain new and useful lini vements Traction-Engine PloW-Stopere; we do hereby declare the followfull, clear, and exact description. the invention, such as will enable others slrillell the ert #0 which it appertaiiis to anal-1e and use "rhe seine.
This invention. relates to draft appliances, and i relzitesmore particularly to a resilienli draft medium, designed to connect a traction engine or the like with the object being drawn thereby, such, forinsience, as
gong-plow.
objecl; if the invention is to provide, conne on with draft mediun n between source oi motive power and the object thereby, means whereby, when the resistance is increased above a i'irecleter "mined normal, 11 trip orlrigger will be so iuutecl, or causing the motive power tobe min e l, diverted, counteracted, annulled cruise rendered inoperative A soil object of the invention is to orovi an improved resilient draft medium, hero :1 motor and an object which is to the sicl object, from beingisniiited to the motor.
ther obiecis and advantages may be red I after and in ihe claims. .1 .i accompanying drawings which pert this application, Figure 1 represents, somewhat diagrammatica ly, the
1r enrl of e traction engine having our linproverl draft medium connected hereto. lfiig. a detail sectional view through ';he con mining the resilient mediu n, and, U2", 3 s View, in perspective of the pawl- 1 m mber.
i H Q rring to the drawings, m. which simirelercuce characters designate corresponciing' ports 'r-hroughout thesevcral views, y the engine is designated, 5, and lie Plili orm 6 thereof secured a bracket rwielefi with shock 8 and with a hug a b l 9a In this bearing 9 is journalecl J3 having on speriured vertical (gr n recl horizontal arm or trig thereto l ivotecl to the engine a ll having its lower encbiever 1%,
engagement with the shoulder or keeper 15,-of the arm 12, and a spring 1.6, having one end secured to the engine and its other curl secured to the arm ll, tends to retain the engagement of the lever 14 and they keeper-15, under normal conolitions While a spring 1? tendsto draw the top part of the lever 14. rearwardly of the engine. A rod 18, mounted to be reciprocetecl in e bearing-l9, by means of a. hand-lever 20, has a collar 21 secured thereon, and o s ring 22 interposed between the collar on the bearing 19, The lever is pivoted at 23 11) a, bracket 24% and pivoted at 25 to the rocl 18 and said hand-lever 20 is provided with e pawl-trip member 26 which engages with :i toothed segmental portion 2? of the bracket 24, said bracket being secured to the engine by any proper means. The pawllrip member consists of a pawl 26, a journol 9 6 and a crank 26*.
The draft medium consists of an eye-bolt 28 engaging the hook 8 and having a helical spring 29 arounol the shank thereof, rhe spring 29 being inolosecl by an elongated casing or housing 30, aperiured at boih ends for the reception of the shank of and a link 31, respectively, the latter being intended to properly connect with :1 gangplow, or other object. to be drawn, (not shown). A. nut 28 and a Washer 32 are secured on the shank of the bolt 28, and the spring 29 is interposed between l'he washer 32 and an end of the casing or housing 30, so that when a pull is exerted on the bolt 28 and a resistance is applied to the link 31, the spring pull anrlrcsisinmc. The real and lower end of the casing 80 carries a lug 33 to which is secured on end of a connecting member or link 34, provided with a turn-buckle for adjusting the length thereof, the other end of the link 34: is secured to the arm 11., through one of the apertures 36, and it is obvious that, by means of these apertures and the turn-buckle the rod 34 may be adjusted, for increasing or decreasing the amount of pull necessary to disengage the lever 14- from the keeper 15, against the action of the springs 16 and 29.
In operation; assuming that there is :1 gangplow or other means of resisimice :11)- plied to the link 3]., and that the exerrcd by the engine or motor is to overcome ihc resistance; the engine will continue to ovcrc the residence until the latter increase hove k col-lulu predeterthe bolt 28 .move forward the action of the engine is controlled.
mined normal, whereupon, the action of the springs 16 and 29 will be overcome, the easing 30, the link 34 and the lower end of the arm 11 will be moved .rearwardly, thereby the spring 22 Will now ca'usethe rod 18 to The rod 18 may be connected with a clutch .mechanism (not shown) but'which may be of any usual construction, for connecting the 'motivepower with the traction wheels of the engine. It is obvious, however, that the rod 18 could be connected with any ordi vnary form of brake mechanism or valve con trolling mechanism (not. shown), whereby It is obvious that when a. gang-plow is drawn by an engine through the medium oi? our i m-' proved draft mechanism, and said plow i.
suddenly stopped by an obstacle, the spring 29 will yield, While tlie engine moves slightly forward, during the operation of the trip and its adjuncts, so that the shock received by the plow is not transmitted to the engine. It will. be seen that we have provided an improved mechanism which is capable of attaining the foregoing objects, and in a thoroughlyflaractical and etlicient manner.
Vile do notlimit our invention to the exact details of construction, coii'ibination and ai' trated, but our invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the following claims.
pWl at we claim is vyieldable element adapted to be connected to a moyable-object to be drawn, an enginecQntrOl-I'ing'eIe nent, means for holding the '1, In combination with a traction engine, 3
engine controlling element normally out of engine-controlling position, and a trigger on the platform and cooperatively connected with the yieldable element for releasing said engine-controlling element from the last said means.
2-. In a device adapted to be connected between a traction engine and an object drawn thereby, a yieldable element adapted to be connected to said object a movable element adapted to be connected to an engine-controlling device, a lever carrying a pawl-tri p for engagement with a toothed segment "for holding said movable element normally out of operative position, a spring; actuated lever adapted to actuate the trip for releasing it from engagement with the toothed segment, a keeper for holding said le er normally out of contact with the pawl-trip, and means operatively connecting the keeper with the yieldable element tor releasing the lever therefrom.
3, In combination with a yieldable draft elementconnecting a source of motive power and an object drawn thereby, a power-eontrolling element, means including a pawl trip for normally retaining the power eontrolling element out of operative position, a leverliaving means connected therewith for releasing the pawl trip, a keeper for nor mally holding the lever out of tripaeleafiiiig position, and means operatively, connecting said keeper with the \;'ieldal )lc elen'ient for l releasing the lever from he keeper. i'angeinent of parts, as described and illus-f
