To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ALEXANDER RisrEL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of .Cook and State of'Illinois, have invented a new and useful "Door x Gheck and Closer. of which the followmg 1S3 specification.
The present invention relates to improvemerits in door checks and closers/the primary object of the invention being the provision of a means for locking the'spring actuated.
arms against the tension of. the spring in full extended position to retain the door in open position and an auxiliary means for locking the said arms in intermediate position, the main mechanism being the usual form of fluid and spring controlled door check and closer, although itis to' be under-. stood that the same may be used in connection entirely with a spring actuated door bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, thenumeral 1 designates the casing whose lower reduced end 2 is the liquid chamber while the upper enlarged end 3 is the mechanism carrying chamber. The partition is disposed to substantially hermetically seal the liquid chamber 2 and thereby separate the liquid from the mechanism carrying chamber of the casing. p v
Mounted within the liquid carrying chamher 2 is the plunger 5 which is provided with diametrically disposed grooves 6 in which are adapted to lit the pin 7 and the adjusting screw 7 mounted in the sleeve 8, said adjusting screw 7 also providing a means for draining or filling the liquid chamber.
By this means it will be seen that the plun ger is mounted so as to be permit-ted only a sliding movement within the chamber 2. Disposed in the lower end of the plunger 5 is a valve 9 to control the ports 10, which permits the-proper sliding movement of the plunger the same providing a by-pass for 'the passage of the liquid within the chamber 2 from one side to the other of the piston 5 so as to act in the manner of a dash-pot and ease the movement of the spindle 13 which is the main actuating spindle of the device. The lower end of the spindle 13 has the squared upper portion 13 and has its lower cylindrical end connected to the worm or spiral 12 which coacts with the grooves 11 of the plunger so that the rotation of the spindle 13 will impart the desired up and down movement to the plunger 5 within the chamber 2.
The greater portionot the spindle 1?) projected within the chamber 3, is shouldered as at 14. while sealing the upper open end of the casing is a lid or cover 15 above which the spindle 13 projects. As clearly shown in; Fig. 9, the lid 15 is provided with the depending flange 16 which carries the adjusting screw 17, which is adapted to aline with and enga one ot-thc sockets 18 formed in the body of the casing 1; so that the said lid may beadjusted and retained in any desired adjustment lrvmeans of the screw 17 and one of the sockets 18. The lid 15 is provided .with the enlarged concentric aperture 19 for the reception of the sleeve 20, whose upper disk portion is .in reality a gear 21, disposed to engaged by the adjusting screw :22 carried by the inner arm 23, which connected at 24 to the upper end of the actuating spindle 1 3. The arm 23 has pivotally connected to its outer end the extensible arm 25-, which carries at its free end the door engaging plate 26. while the casing l carries the jainb or wall engaging plate 26, whereby the device iiiay be properly attached for operation.
Formed integral with and upon the top of the cover to. is a hug 27 which is at a diametrically opposite point to the screw -17, while within the underside of the arm 23 is disposed the spring actuated lug 28, which is in the path to abut and engage the lug 27 ot the lid, and when the arm is in the dotted position as shown in Fig. l, the
lug 2T,will hold the arm extended against the tension 01" the spring In order to' properly mount the spring actuated lug 28, a recess is formed in the underside of the arm as at 28, the same being sealed by a plate 29, while the spring 30 is incased therein so as to normally hold the lug 28 in the position as shown in Fig. 2.

ready access to the pins39 and springs 42. This plate is provided with the rectahgular aperture 44', (Fig. 10) to fit upon the rectangular portion 13' of the spindle or shaft 13 so that the frame 38 is fixed for rotation with the spindle or shaft.
In the wall of the casing adjacentto the chamber 3, is formed a segmental slot 45 which is sealed by means of a shdable plute 46, semi-circular in cross section, and. which has connected thereto the reduced lug 48- ot the adjustable locking lug 49. This lock- .ing lug is disposed to be slid to assume tiny of the .rarious positions regulated by the length of the slot 45, so as to be disposed in the path to abut the projection 41, and as the plate 44 holds the frame 38'fixcdly with the spindle or shaft 13 the spindle 13 can be locked at any intermediate position, to hold the said spindle against the tension of the spring 32 so that'the folding arms 23 and 25 may retain the door at any position between closed and fully open. In ordei to lock the abutment 49 in the desired position, and at the same time lock the plate 4G in such position, the screw 50 engages the reduced portion 48 of the device shown in Fig. 7, and projects exteriorly of the casing through the. slot 45, the same being provided with the milled disk 51,'s0 that the 5 same may be rotated to exert a tension upon the washer 52 which is disposed uponthe screw 51 and spans the slot 45 so that the inner face of the abutment 49" is drawn toward the said washer 52, and the parts are a clamped in any desired position.
