Description

aan enna.-
H To all whom it may concern):
Be itknowu that I,- HENRY i Norwalk, in the county of Fariield and State of 00n- `n`ecticut, have invented a'uewImprovement in Door- `Keys; and I do herebydeelare the follcwing, when taken `in connection .with the accompanying drawings `and' the -letters of reference` marked thereon, tobea i `full, clear, and'V exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and representin l i Figure `1, the key complete;` .rlligure 2, the blank, preparatory to casting the `spindle thereon; and in n Figure 3, a` section*throughthe cast portiono' the 1 'spindle. A
`This intention relates to thfconstrnction of la at steel` key to operate in that class 'of locks which is use for this class of locks. l The inventionconsists vinfirst`.for|ni| 1g ablank for l the key from sheet metal, withthe bow, spindle, and bit in a single vpiece, thatfportion of the -spindle to which the, bitis attached, and which forms thev bearing, made less in widththan 4that required for the diameter of the spindle when complete, then placing the vblank in a suitable mold, audpouring molten metal into the mold around that portion of the stem, to `V enlarge andronnd thebit end of the spindle, so as to li form a bearing for the supportand turning the key in thelock. I
Fig. 2r epresentsthe blank.` A is `the spindle, Bthe bow, and O the bit, all in tjally the form se'en in igf2. That-.portion of the pindlefwhicli isl to form the bean'ngupon which the keyfturns, vI make lessin widthgthan the "diameter required for thefspindle when complete,`fan`d on the s ide yoppositethe' bit I cnt ing tb make thel k'ey. lighter than the keys in common locks,
one piece, and struckv iom sheet metal in substanfv i utwenn oF SOUTH NORWALK, coNNEcTIcUT:
The Schedule i-eixred torin thse Letters Patent and making part of the same metai blank int'o a mold` prepared toreceive it, and so Y as to leave a space around the spindle end ofthe key,
as denoted in solid black, fig. 3.` Then into this space in the mold any suitable metal, as 'brass or` iron in a' molten state', is poured, to enlarge or shape the bearing end of the keyinto the usual form for keysfor this class of locks. .i f
To prevent the molten inet-al from blowing7 `aroundthe bit, I/make the notch d upon the back side, so as to snpp'lya larger quantity of metal at that point, whichprevents 'blowing'or cold-short.
This notch is not essential, but it insures a successful cast, which would otherwise be uncertain.
.Removed from the mold, the spindle D, as seen 1n figfl, is inis'hedin the usual manner, with the shoul- `(1era, and the bit is tted for the gnards'and turnblers, also in the usual manner,V
Thus I produce a Hat key, tted for-use in common at less 'expense than common keys arepi'o'L duced,l as the blank is 'struck from sheet metal by suitable dies, so that no uishiug is required, 'and the casting of the spindle in prepared molds costs much Aless than molding and casting common. keys, and the key itselwhen complete, is rerymuch lighter andl stronger.
I do not wish-to be understood-as broadly claiming a fiat-metalv key with an' enlarged spindle, as such is not new;'but l I doel-aim as my invention- As an article of manufacture', a dat metal 'key-V blank, having the spindle D cast'thcreon inthe manner substantially as described. f

LORENZO SCQFIELD.
