IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES-Fon' POLLSHING NEEDLES.
The Schedule referred to'in these-Letters Patent and making parl: of the seme v tion ,of the same,'andv which said drawings` constitute part ofthis specilicatiomjand represen-t in-" Figure 1, a top View.; Figure 2, a top'vicfw, aportion of the machine rcmoved to show the` polishing-cylinder. Figure 3,- a f1'oii`t-v *ie\v;and in Figure 4, afsection througlrthe hopper. This invention relates 'to animprovement in ina'- chincry for polishing common sewing-needles alter they have been tempered; land lhe invention consists in the larrzuigement cfa diagonal polishing-cylinder -witlra carrying device',
which causesl the needles to revolve as they are passed;
over the said cylinder, so that the diagonal position of. the 'eylinderwill cause it to operate upon the 'whole or a considerable portion of vthe length ot the-needle.
To enablelothersto construct and use my improvement, I will fully describe the sam-e as illustrated in the accornpany'iugjdrawings.
A is the bed-plate. B, the driving-shaft, arranged to revolve in' 'suitable bearings, G. A A j D is the `polishing 'ylinder, arranged diagonallyon the bed-plate, as `seen in iigs. 1 and 2, supported in bearings a, andcaused to revolve rapidly bythe application of power thereto from the driving-shaft, or otherwise, the .said shaft being arrangedso that its vupper surface will lie inline with the surface ot' a bed,
E, running longitudinally across the bed-plate, as' denoted in g. 2.
'Above the bed-plate an endlcssband, G, is arranged, upon pulleys, H, to which a slow movementis given, and on the belt, over the open, space through 'the bed E, are arranged 'pressure-pads d, to -bear upon the baud at that point, and in immediate connection with the carrying band G, a hopper, I, is arranged, tov r ceivef the needles in bulk, and provided with amech-v anism for delivering the needles to'tlxe said band and table E, and when the needles are-so delivered,"tb'e band traversing in the direction denotedrby .the arrowin lig. 3 carries the needles along withf it byrolling the needles between it andthe table E, and, thus rolling,A the needles are carried along over the diagonal polish- 'ing-cylinder, D, pressed` down bythe .pads (l, so that the said cylinder, revolving rapidly, acts upon the needle upon nearly or quite its 'entire length, the in-.
ner end ci thc polishing-cylinder.striking the-needle first, and, fis-the needlel` progresseastouching and'polishing the needle upon its entire surface until it 'passes from the polishingfcyliud'cr, and is deliveredfrom the machine.
In the hopper i1,1 show a feed,vwl lich, while peculiarly adapted' to this machine, is alike adapted to niachincsfor similar purposes.
'Beneath the hopper I` on thcgtable E is arranged a slide, n, operated by a cam,'m, on the shaft B, through a lever, l). 4The upper surface of the slide is covered with somesoft material, or material of a' Aiexiblenature, and the mouth of the hopper broad, so as to permit several needles' tolie upon the surface of Ithe slide; The rear edge of the hopperlies so closely upon the slide that the needles` cannot pass out upon that -side';,and upon the other edgeofthe hopper a spring plate, fr, is arranged, extending to the band G.
To theslide n a rapid vibratory movement is given, and as it advances eachtime f it rolls from the hopper oneorn'ioreneedlcs nndertlie spring r, the plate returning cannot returnthe needle; consequently-each advance ot thefshde carries more needles, forcing them. out constantly from' beneath lthe spring to the band G, where they-aro taken and-carried along, as before described.
Having fully .described my invention,
.1. The arranger-nent .of the polishing-cylinder D- oblquely across `the table and underneath the band G, as described, for the purpose of' grinding or polish-v iuglthe'4 needle throughout its entire length, as the vlat-ter is rolled along vby'the action of thc band upon it. 2. ln combination with the hopper and table,'the slide n, coveredv or coated tom' of the=hopper, the ,spring plate lr, and mechanism to impart to the slide. a reciprocating movement, the said .slide being designed to force theneedles out one'by one.;.om';he bottoni of the hopp'enloy the friction ot"`its-covered surface against the needles, as set forth.
