EosE A. HEGEL, or Los ANGELES, oALIroRNI ooAs'rING DEVICE.
Specification' of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1f, 19.13.
Application led February 26, 19.12. Serial No. 6230,125.v
To all 'whom t may conce-m.'
Be v1t known that I, Rosn' A. -HEGEL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Los Angeles. in the county of Los Angeles,
State of California, have invented a new and' useful Coasting Device, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to an amusement device which is especially intended for childrens use, and the main object of the invention is to provide a coasting device which is adapted to be used on pavements,
. braked or arrested'when required.
sidewalks or other smooth surfaces, and to be propelled, for example, by means of a stick or pole.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a device of .this nature which can lie-readily guided by balancing movements of the body.
Another' object ofv vide a coastingdevice which can be r the invention is to proeadily Other objects ofthe invention will appear hereinafter.`
Referring to the accompanying drawings fforming embodimlents of the invention- Figure l is a perspective showing the coasting device in operation. Fig. 2 isla side elevation of the coasting device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device in position for braking, one of the truck rollers being removed to show the hinge bracket therefor. Fig. 4 is Aa plan of the device. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation.
The coasting device constituting the present invention comprises a deck or 'platform l mounted on two roller-trucks 2 and having a forward exension 3 serving as a support for the feet- 'The platform l may be of wood or other suitable material and may'be provided at its rear portion with a cushion or pad 4 serving as a seat, the weight of the body being mainly on this portion of theplatform between the locations ofthe two roller trucks 2. x
The roller trucks 2 1 are similar to the trucks of the ordinary roller-skate, caen comprising a pair of rollers 5 journaled on y s shaft 6 mounted in a frame 7 which is hinged or pivoted to a bracket 8 on the platform Lby a ivot 9 which is oblique or -inelinedo a horlzontal plane so that tllting' of the platform lin a transverse direction will result in swinging.' or turning of the shaft 6 for the rollers-5 around a vertical the result that the device swerves or turns 'ing as a foot-rest, this cross bar being prefi lground or pavement.
lmay be tipped as Shown in Fig. 3 so as t'o axis, and the Obliquity of the 'inclination of the two hinge shafts) for the'respective roller trucks is in opposite directions, both of said shafts 9 being inclined downwardly toward a point below the center of the-seat portion of the platform.
An elastic means such as a soft rubber cushion let is provided engaging the pivoted parts of 'each roller truck to hold the said parts in normal position, thereby tending to maintain the platform in horizontal position.
The extension or forward prolongation 3 from the platform is preferably provided with a cross bar 10 atits forward end serverably adjustable in a longitudinal direction and being fastened,'for example, by
means of screws l1 `engaging in any one of a series of pairs of holes l2.
The operation is as follows: vThe boyl 'using the coasting device sits on the platform l, with his legs extending over the' extensions 3 and his feet resting?` against the l foot-rest 10. In this position the centerof.j gravity will be back of the forward trucki` Q so that the normal position 'of the device`| i is as shown in Fig. 2 with the platform l horizontal and the forward end 3 extend f. ing horizontal and out of contact with theli The boy may then?` 35 propel himself by means of a stick indicated at 13 in Fig. l, or by other suitable `y means.- For example, the device may heil 'used as a simple coasting device if a suit-l able incline is available.y Guiding means ,90 may to some extent bey effected by means ofl t-he pole 13, but it is most conveniently ef-,'v fected by tipping the platform to one side or the other and throwing the weight of the;r body to that side. When the platform is'y 95 thus tipped to one side, the roller-trucks are swung so that' the horizontal axles 6 api preach one another at their ends which areg' toward the downwardly tipped side, with lo() howard that side in the manner of a rollerskate.v When it is desired to bra-ke the device the pole 13 may be used, or by leaning the 'body forward lthe forward platform 105 bring the forward end of the extension 3 in Contact with the ground or pavement tog act as a brake; In order to enable this re` sult to be accomplished, the forward Vexlength that the foot 'y res-d10. thereon isi-far ther from the front trioklf than the front truck is from the rearrtruolrg so that the' personJsing the coaster canl by leaning *forf Ward, balance himself on the front truck and by av slight forward movement tip the device forwardly. l
What I claim is:
l. A eoasting'device, comprising av platform, lrollerl trucks connected to said plat.- orm below the platform, said roller trucks being adapted to tilt on axes,l extending obliquely to a horizontal plane, soneto enable lateral deflection of the platform by tipping of the platform, dsaid platformhaving a forwardv extension providedvvitb a foot rest, the distance from the frontroller truck to said foot rest being greater than the distance between theroller trucks so as to enable a--person riding on the platform to depress the forward extension byv leaning" I tbem'anner of abrale,4 by leaning forwardly overthe front roller-'truck In testimony. whereof, I have Vhereunto Set my hand at Los. Angeles Californathis 19th day of Febriary 19l2. f
