VALVE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
liatented Feb. i913.
Application filed May 2, 1912. Serial No. fifi lfifiit To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALBERT BOOTH, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Fred crick and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of thevinvention, such as will enable otlicrs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My inventionvrelates to new and useful.
improvements in valve construction and more particularly to that class known as rotating cut-off valves and designed particularly for use in connection with steam operated injectors.
My object is to provide a valve of this class which may be used in connection with the injector to release pressure between the injector and the check valve adjacent the boiler.
A further object is to so locate the valve that when the injector is' in operation the exhaust pipe connected with the valve casing will be closed.
A further object' is to so construct the valve that when the injector is not in use the passage from the injector to the boiler will be'completely closed.
A further object is to so construct the valve that one of the openings communicating with the valve casing may be partially uncovered, while the other opening remains following specification.
completely closed, and,
A further object is to provide means for operating the valve simultaneously with the operation of the injector.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the I In the accompanying drawings which are made .a part of this application, Figure l is a side elevation of an injector showing my improved valve in section, and, Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view -of my improved I form of valve.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the injector which may be of the usual or any preferred type, such as is used for forcing water into a steam boiler and 2 indicates the lever employed for operating the injector, one end of the leven being pivoted to parts oft-he injector frame.
shpwn) through the medium of a )0 0. said pipe being provided with a cherir valve adjacent the end thereof entering the boiler, said check valve being of the usual or well known type adapted to prevent the steam pressure in the boiler from entering the pipe. It frequently happens that the check yalve l, for various reasons, springs a leak so that the pressure within the pipe 3 is the same as the pressure within the boiler and when such is the'case the injector will not properly work, as it is unable to overcome the pressure against the valves in the injector and for this reason I have provided my improved form of rotating 'or pressure regulating valve 5, which valve is mounted in a cylindrical casing 6 and said casing is connected with the pipe and injector through ports 7 and 8, respectively. The
valve 5 is so arranged that when the-injector is not in use the faces 9 and 10 thereof are seated over the ports 7 and 8, respectively, and completely close communication therea greater extent whereby the port 7 will bepartially o ened previous to the opening of the port 8. By arranging the valve-in this manner the \pressure within the pipe 3 will pass into the upper portion of the casing 6 and througha central opening 11 in the valve 5 and thence through an exhaust pipe 12 communicating respectively with the lower portion of the casin'g 6 and the overflow pipe 13 of the injector, thus relieving the pressure in the pipe 3 and giving the jet of steam and water from the injector a clear passage through the pipe and permitting the same to travel flwith sufficient force to readily overcome the steam pressure within the boiler.
The valve 5 is operated from the lever 52 of the injector, the stem 14 of the valve projecting through one end of the casing 6 and having an arm 15 attached thereto which is in turn connected with a valve operating arm 16 of the injector by link 17, the arm 16 being likewise connected to the lever 2 'through a link 18, although any other preferred means may be employed for operating the valve 5 in conjunction with the lever 2. The ,valve 5 and the interior of the 035- v prime the injector, this operation rotatingthe valve 5 sutficiently to Open the port 7,.
ing, 6 are tapered from one end to the other so that the faces of thefvalve may be kept but not a sutiicientdistance -to open the port through the opening 11 and exhaust pipe 12.
" the valve and p1pe3.
Itwill thus be seen thatI have provided 8 and if the check valve 4- should be leaking the pressure within the'p ipe 3 will be immediatelyreleased and permitted to pass As soon as the injector isproperly primed the lever 2 is thrown open its full distance which will result in giving the valve 5 a' half turn and'positioning the face 9 overthe end of the exhaust pipe 12, closing communicat-ion therethrough, While. the opening 11 will be in direct alinement with the ports 7 and 8, thus giving a-clear passage through means whereby the objectionable features resulting from aleaky valve will be fully overcome and one that will insure the operation'of'the injector-at all times. will likewise be seen that 'in view of the sim- ,plicity of the valve it-can be very :ch'eaply constructed and readily applied to use It will further. be seen that, if desired, the valve can be located at a suitable point I within the injector proper and ituwill further be seen that it can be successfully used in connection with other devices where presthe pipe,.one face of said valve having a.
overcome. V r r i What I claim is; e 1
sure resulting from a leakyvalve is to be .1. A pressure regulating device comprising the combination with an injector, a check valve and a pipe connecting the injector and check valve, of avalve adapted to control the passage of particles through greateroVerIap than the other, whereby when the valve isrot-ated the opening in one section of the pipe will be opened previous to the opening of the other section of the pipe.
in perfect contact with the 'face of the cas-, ingand to accomplish this result a spiral check valve, of a v ve ca. communicating with J pipe and injector, aa'valv seated; 1n*'said 2. In a pressure regulatingdevice the combination with an injeCto'r,-a check valve and a pipe extending from the injector the check valve, of 'a valve adapted to control the passage of particles through said pipe; said valve havingan' opening therethrough, a casing surrounding the valve and having ports communicating with the" openings of the pipe-section, one-,faceof the valve having a greater overlap than-the opposite face, whereby when the valveis rotated one of the 'ports'will be opened previous to. the other and. means cooperating with parts of the'injecjtor to operate said,
with-the operationrof the "al ve coincident 1n ector. Y
3.- A pressureregulatlng device eomprising being tapered, of a tapered valve adapted to enter said casing and be rotated to 1 cover or uncover, said ports, said valve" having anopening therethrough onefiac of the valve overlapping its port a'greater-Jlistimes than the other, whereby one of the ports will beuopened previous'to' the other. port, means to direct pressure, against the" end of thevalve to.'hold the same seated' against the wall of the casing and means to rotate said valve. 1
' 4. A pressure regulating device comprist in a casin havin orts therein said cas-J' ing-the combination withau injector having a lever to operate; the sanie,'aicheck valvei and a pipe connecting the lnj'e ctjorfwith-the -having ports iifif'g'sQin' the casing and having. an opening itherethrough said valve cotipe'rating with said ports, one face of the valve overlapping its port a greater distance than the other, whereby one of the ports will be opened'previo'us to the opening of the opposite" port, an exhaust port comniunic'ating'with the valve casing and means connec't'edwlth said lever to;
operate said valve when theilev'er is moved to operate'the injector, I A
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
