ELECTRICAL SWITCH,
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed April 19, 1911. Serial No. 622,002.,v
T 0 add whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION F. YoUNc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Switches, of which the following is a specification' This invention relates to electrical switches designed for use on trolley or underground electric railways, and one of the principal objects of the invention is toprovide simple,-
reliable and eflicient means for throwing the switch points by automatic means whenever desired by the motorman.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electric switchin which the mechanism for operating the switch is entirely inclosed in awater tight casing located at a suitable point adjacent to the track, said casing containing a motor which is operated at the will of the motorman on.the car for throwing the switch points.
Still another object of the inventionis to by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
F igure 1 1s a side elevation of a portlo n of a trolley car showing means for operating 1 the contact wheels made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the motor casing in section and the electrical connections for operating the switch points. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the car showing the contact rails and the track rails and switch points in section. 4 is a view in elevation and partial section showing the mechanism for throwing the switch points.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a trolley car of the overhead trolley type and it will he understood that my invention may be used in connection with other types of electric cars with slight modifications in the manner of making the electrical connections.
The'numeral2 designates the main track rails, 3 the switch points, 4; tlie'car wheels,
5 the trolley-pole and 6 the mainline wire.

These elements or parts may be of the usual or any suitable construction. Contact rails 6 are secured to the ties 7 between the track;
rails at a point near the switch for making the necessaryconnections for operating the motor and switch points. The contact rails 6 may be formed of T-iron or angle bars. Contact wheels 8, preferably provided with grooves to fit the contact rails 6 are journaled on the ends of an axle 9, said ends being insulated from each other as shown a at 30, Fig. 2, to'which axle is connected a bar 10, said bar being pivoted underneath I the car 1 and provided with a lever 11 for raising and lowering the contact wheels 8,
said lever being operated by means of a push pin 12 extending through the platform near the controller 13. The switch points 3 are connected together by a rod 14 in order that v both switch points may be operated together.
A watertight box or casing 15, located at any convenient point nearthe switch con: tains an electric motor 16. On the main shaft of the motor is a pinion 17 in mesh with a gear wheel 18 mounted on a shaft 19. One of the spokes of the gear wheel 18 is provided with a pi'n QO. A bar 21 is. provided with pivoted sto'ps 22 disposed in opposite relation on said-bar 21, said stops being pivoted at 23 to the bar and provided with limiting pins 24 which, prevent the -movement of the stops 22 beyond a h0ri-' Springs 25 are secured to zontal position. the bar 21 and bear against the stops 22 for holding them down in position in the path of the pin 20. Pivotally connected to the bar 21 is a two armed lever 26 pivoted at 27 to one of the ties 7 The upper endof the lever 26 is pivotally connected to a link 28 secured to one" of the switch -pei=rts The electrical connections are SliOWgLiIL Fig. 2
and when established by means of the contact wheels 8 with'the contact rails 6' the current pass'esthroughj one of-the wires toone of the contact wheels, through the-wheel to one of the rails 6, throughthe rail and, y
the wire connected to its end to the" through the motor out through the-wire on nected to the other rail 6', through therail to the other contact wheel and-thrpngh this' wheel and the wire connected to-it'back to the controller.
