` ATTORNEY- UNITED srarEs PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR H. NAVILLE, 0F AAM'IBIA, INDIANA.
POST-HOLE BIGGER.
' To all whom t may conce-rn.'
x Be it known that I, OSCAR H.-NAV1LLE, aA citizen of the vUnited States, residing -at Ani-bia, in the county of Benton and State 4 of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers, of which the following is a-specification.
My invention relates to improvements in post hole diggers, and more particularl to a construction' whereb 'the size of the ole excavated may be varied at will by adjusting-.the relative positions of the jaws of the digger. j v v Heretofore much inconvenience has been caused by the fact that to dig post holes of diderentsizes diggers of various sizes had to be employed.` This is particularly thel case with that type of digger inwhich semi` circular. opposed 'blades or jaws are used.
vIt is anobject of my invent-ion to overcome this dithculty by providinga digger or auger which has such blades so larranged as to be adjustable toward oraway from each' other whereby `the size of the hole dugmay be varied at the will ofthe operator.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a digger as 'the above which shall be simple in construction and sti-ong and durable in use, but at 4the same time cheap to manufacture. i
e With theforegoing and other objects in view my invention consists of such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be vhereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the' appended claims. U In describing m'yinvention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,
Figure l is a view inside elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail viewy in perspective,
l'showing how the jaw arms are mounted upon the cross bar,
lin carrying my invention into practice l provide the usual stem 1' to which the handle (not shown) is connected. Mounted upon the lower end of the stem is a cross-v bar 2, which may be made of tubular metal as shown, out of a solid bar of wood, or any, other suitable material. This bar has :pei-v forations 3 passing laterally.-. therethrough,' which perforations are spaced apart at any" given distances and are of lsuch number'a's' `Speeicatioii of Letters Patent.
to permit a wide range of adjustment of the digger blades or jaws as will be hereinafter more fully seen.
Mounted so as to slide upon the cross bar v-2 are collars 4 vand 5, one lcollar being upon each side of the stem l. J-Set screws 6 are operative through said collars and are adapted to engage the top of the bar 2 so as to hold said collars inany desired position upon said bar. The collars, also, are formed with perforations, which perforations are .registerable with any or all of the perforations in the aforementioned bar so as to permit bolts 7, or any other suitable fastening device, to be passed through said collars and said bar, whereby'said colla-rs may be rigidly fastened or adjusted in any position. Extending downwardly and outwardly fromsaid collars i and 5 are arms. 8 and 9 'respectively which carry blades or jaws 10 and 11 of usual construction.
The operation of my improved digger Patented Feb. 11,1913. g Application filed December 23,' 1910. 'Serial No. 598,950.
will be readily apparent from the above dev script-ion.
' .It will be seen that the collars 4f and 5= may be moved backward and forward upon the bar 2 thus relatively changing the positions of the blades and, consequently, the size of the hole made. Any'number of combinations may be made so as to vary the size of the hole. It will nlso be seen that the sizes of thevarious parts may be changed to suit different conditions, and that,. for instance, the bar 2 may be made long or short as may be desired, provided of course that the length of the bar does not exceed the diameter ofthe smallest hole which it is desired to form with a given sized instrument, I desire it to be understoodthat slight changes in the construction and .in the arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the 'spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of.- the' Vappended claims.
saidcollars and'engaging' theftop ofjSa-'id 5 cross b ar to lcontrol the vmovement'of. said collars, means carried bysaid collarsfand extendingthrough said perforations in said v crossqbar and also adaiited to'l control the' movement of said ,collars and cutting blades attached to said collars.
2. In a ost'hole digger, a stemfafcross.
bar secure tothe lower. endof said stem', said cross barv provided with la plurality of openings,l collars slidably ymounted-'upon said cross bar,
' openings at their sides an'd'tops,` means exa steni'having a cross bar` secured thereto, sa1d'cr0ss bar provlded, with openlngs exv v and said collars ,provided with tendingflaterall therethrough, collars slidfablymounted-upon s'aidcrOSs bar, said collarsyprovided with`openings at their sides have *connect-ion' with cutting blades, pms adapted to extend vthrough thesides of said collars, and through'said cross bar, 'and screws-.adapted to opei'atcthrough/ thetigper portions of said vcollars and engage t 'e tops, arms formed'integral with' sai'd' Vcollars adapted toextend downwardly and upper portionof said crossrhar A:for the pur- Y pose described. v
