COMEINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
Application filed September 25, 1912. Serial No. 722,178
Be it known that we, FLAVIO FALATO and ALroNso ABATE, subjects of the King of Italy, residing at Paterson, in county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention has for its object to provide a lock with a simple, efiective and reliable means giving it the character of a combination lock.
The invention consists in a plurality of stop devices journaled in a suitable case and rotative into and out of movementopposing relation to the bolt or other movable locking member, of the lock, said member having movable means to efiect its movement manually, in combination with intergeared rotary actuating members for the stop devices, the same having reversely acting clutch-engagements respectively therewith.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is an outside view of a fragment of a door provided with the improved lock; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of what appears in Fig.1; Fig. 3 shows the lock removed from the door and in elevation, the front Wall of the case being removed'and the parts appearing in that relation wherein the aforesaid locking member, or latch-bolt, is operative as a latch; Fig. 4: is a view somewhat similar to Fig. 3 with the parts, in that relation wherein said member is operative as a bolt; Figs. 5 and 6 are a front elevation and a plan of said locking member; Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view, slightly enlarged, on the line wm of Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line y-y of Fig. 7 and looking toward the left in said figure, and Fig. 9 is an elevation of one of the rotary stop-devices; Fig. 10 is a view showing the spindle for operating the combination mechanism in section and one of its knobs in inside elevation and Fig. 11 a fragmentary elevation of the exterior escutcheon and dial; and, Fig. 12 is an elevation of said spindle, inner dial and inner escutcheon.
In the door a is arranged in the usual manner the lock case I) having as one of its walls the face plate 0 and having its wall d removable. In guidewayse in. the case slides the aforesaid locking member f which is movable to a position where its outer end projects through the opening 9 in the face-plate c or toa position where its outer end is wholly retracted or withdrawn into the case The lnember f is normally forced outwardly by a spring h and its outward movement is limited by a lug 2' which engages. the face-plate 0 (Fig. 4). The member f may be retained at an intermediate position by a detent in the form of a slide 3' movable vertically in a guide 70 attached to the face-plate so as to stand in or out of the path of outward movement of lug 2'; said detent is shown holding member f at the intermediate position in Fig. 3. The detent has a fingerbutton Z projecting through a slot m in the face-plate a. The member f is withdrawn by turning the knob spindle n, suitably journaled in the case and carrying the arms 0 and p, the former ofwhich, upon turning the spindle in one direction, engages a lug g on member f and so retracts said member and the latter of which, on turning the spin.- dle in the other direction, engages a pawl 1* which in turn engages a lug s on member f to retract said member The part of member f which projects when said member is held by the detent j is beveled on one side, as at f and on the other side has a positive stop surface f; the next inwardly adjoining part of member 1 has positive stop-surface f on both sides. Thus member f when partly retracted (Fig. 3) serves as a latch; and when fully projected serves as a bolt.
-Member f has abutment faces t, u and '0 extending crosswise of its path of movement and, respectively joining these abutment faces, the, surfaces 2?, u and 11, all parallel with the path of movement of said member; the parts 6, t, u, u form the upper side of a longitudinal slot '10, in the presentinstance, and the parts 42, oare formed in the lower edge of member f.
In the rear wall d of the case and in a bracket w attached to said rear wall are journaled three rotary spindles y forming stopdevices. Two of these penetrate the slot w in member f, being spaced from each other the same as the abutment faces t and u, while the third is received in the recess formed by cutting away the lower edge of member f to produce the abutment face '0 and the surface face 0. In the vertical plane of member f each of the stop-devices y is cutaway to form a recess a, Fig. 9. The relation of each stop-device to the member f is spindles y carries a radial stud 6 which, on rotation of thecorrespon'ding spindle 2, will either wipe over cam-surface 4 or come into positively abutting relation to the shoulder 5: By springs 7 and 8 respectively interw. posed between pinion 2 and a washer 9 abutting the member f and between washers 10 respectively abutting the stud 6 and bracket w, the parts 2 and y' are pressed against each other so as to form a clutch. Itwill be observed that the clutches thus produced act reversely relatively to each other.
' In the position of the memberif (or latchbolt) shown in Fig. 3 all of the recesses 2 of the spindles y face upwardly, thus making it possible for said member to have been retracted to the position shown, In this position said member is free to move back and forth due either to the wiping of its face f against the-keeper of the door frame or to turning of the knob spindle n. If the. detent y be withdrawn, allowing the member 7 to move to its'ifull outward limit and the spindles y be now rotated so that their recesses z are no longer 'in opposed relation to the abutment faces t, u and Q), member f. serves as a bolt and will be locked in Its outward position. In order to unlock member f it is necessary of course to return the spindles y to the positions first assumed, and this is accomplished thus: Pinion 3 is turned first in one direction with the object of thereby turning one of the clutches in the active direction so that the corresponding spindle 3 may be set with its recess a opposite the corresponding abutment-face t or u, the other clutch at this time being turned in the idle direction. Then'the pinion 3 is turned in the opposite direction,
' so that the first-named clutch rotates idly and the last-named-clutch actively, the spindle y of the latter clutch being thus brought to a position whereits recess zis o posite the corresponding abutment-face t .or a).
. as described.
Finally pinion 3 is rotated in the same direction as at first until its recess z is opposite the abutment face 12.
In order to rotate pinion 3 for the purpose either of setting the spindles to the releasing or looking position we preferably provide a spindle 11 journaled in the case and having fixed thereto a pinion 12 meshing with the pinion 3. This spindle has a square ,boreadapted to receive the cross- 7 sectionally square spindle 13 which penetrates the case and the door and may have at its ends the knobs 14 for rotating it, one of the knobs being removably secured to the spindle by a screw 15.
An index means for determining the ex tent of rotation of member 3 wl1ich is necessary in order to move the, spindles 'y to the leveling position is provided as follows: The outer escutcheon 16 carries a rotary dial 17 Whose hub'18 is journaled in said escutcheon, the escutcheon having an orifice 19 through which the indices on the dial may be read. The inner knob 14 may :carry a dial 20 which is read in reference to a pointer 21 on the inner escutcheon 22. :The dial 1? is rotatively adjustably clutched ,to the spindle 13 by a pin 24 on the outer knob 14 which enters any one of a concenltric series of holes in hub 18. It will be obvious that according as spindle 13 is rotatively adjusted relatively to the dial, so the combination which must be followed before member f is released may be changed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is: 1
In combination, a case, a locking member movable therein in a definite path into and out of projecting relation thereto, means to effect movement of said member, stop-devices journaled in said case and rotative' into and out of movement-opposing relation to said member, and intergeared rotary actuating members for said stop-de vices having reversely apting clutch-engagements respectively therewith, substantially In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
