APPARATUS FOR EXTRACTING THE FIBER FROM'TI-IE STALK OF THE ABACA-PLANT.
Application filed July 22, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADRIAN on TCSIAR, residing at Ligao, Albay, Philippine Islands, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Extracting the Fiber from the Stalk of the Abaca-Plant; and I declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to machines for stripping hemp and consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a machine for stripping hemp wherein the work may be expeditiously carried out and wherein the recovered fiber will be of a more uniform grade and higher quality than has heretofore been obtained.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a machine of the character in question which will be of simple construction; one which may be manufactured at small cost; and one which may be properly operated by unskilled hands.
Referring tothe drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a rear endelevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the machine; Fig. 1 is a detail plan view of the clamping device which is carried by the wheel; Fig. 5 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of said clamp; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the clamp taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4E, and Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate a modified construction of clamp jaw locking device.
Referring to the construction in detail. the machine consists of a suitable support ing framework comprising a pair of lateral beams 1 adapted to rest on the ground, a connecting cross beam 2, four upright beams 3 and 4 which are connected at their upper ends by beams 5 and 6 disposed respectively lengthwise and crosswise of the machine frame. The upright beams 3 and 4E have secured thereon suitable brackets 7 on which are mounted a pair of beams 8 disposed lengthwise of the frame.
A wheel 9 is fixed on a shaft 10 that is journaled in bearings 11 mounted on the beams 8, and said shaft has an extension 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

to which is secured a pulley or belt wheel 13 whereby the Wheel 9 may be driven by any suitable mechanical power. A handle 14 is secured to the wheel 13 to the end that the wheel 9 may be rotated by hand power, as will be understood. The rim of the wheel 9 is of relatively wide width and is constructed preferably of metal, and on the outer periphery thereof said wheel rim has secured a pair of hooks 15 whose purpose will be presently explained.
The end of the stalk or group of stalks of the hemp plant from which the baga-sse is to be stripped is adapted to be secured to the wheel 9 through the medium of a clamp, preferably of that construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawing. Said clamp comprises a bar or jaw 16 having formed therein a longitudinal groove or channel 17 adapted to receive with a close fit the projecting portion 18 of a jaw 19 that is hingedly mounted at 20 between a pair of cars 21 on the end of the jaw 16. The jaw 19 has an end slotted portion 22 adapted to receive a locking bolt 23 that is pivotally mounted at 241 near the end of the clamping member 16. Said bolt 23 is adapted to be swung clear of the aw 19 throughthe slot 22, when said aw 19 is free to be raised in that manner indicated by broken lines in Fig. 5. The jaws 16 and 19 are clamped together by the bolt 23 through the medium of a nut 25 which is screw threaded on the end of said bolt.
In the modified construction of clamp jaw locking device shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the movable jaw 19 has a slot 19 formed in the end thereof and adapted to receive a wedge 24 formed on a block 23 that is pivotally mounted on the pin 24 within a slot formed in the end of the fixed jaw 16. The upper end of the block 23 is constructed with a head 25 which fits over the upper end of the jaw 19 and holds said jaw in closed position. The clamp is provided with a pair of eye members 26 secured to the jaw 16 and which are adapted to engage with the hooks 15 carried by the wheel rim after that manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The stripper which cooperates with the rotating wheel 9 consists of an arm 27 fulcrumed at 28 on the cross beam 6 and having a blade portion 29 whose edge is toothed or serrated, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The blade 29 of the arm 27 is normally held in engagement with the cross beam 6 through the medium of a spring 30, which is mounted on a projection 31 of said cross beam and seats against said arm, as shown. The blade 29 is adapted to be lifted for the insertion of the material to be stripped through the medium of a bar 32 that pivotally connects with the arm 27 at the point 33, and at its opposite end 84 is pivotally connected with a lever 35 having a treadle 36. It is proposed to provide the wheel 19 with weights to increase the momentum thereof and to this end a plurality of weights 37 are mounted on the spokes of the wheels as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the machine is as follows :One or more stalks of the abaca plant have the ends thereof secured between the jaws of the clamp which clamp is then looked in the manner described and attached to the hooks of the wheel. The blade 29 is then raised through the medium of the treadle and the stalk placed beneath the tooth edge of the blade, when the treadle is released. The tension of the spring acting on the blade arm is then suflicient to hold the blade against the stalk. The wheel 9 is then rotated either through mechanical or manual power, as preferred, and the stalk with the ends secured on the wheel is drawn against the blade whose teeth remove the pulp or other extraneous matter from the stalk and leave the fiber free. This operation may, of course, be repeated on the stalk so treated until the proper grade of fiber is obtained.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and combination of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a'machine of the character described the combination of a supporting frame; a wheel journaled on said frame; hooks mounted on the periphery of said wheel; means for rotating said wheel; a stalk securing clamp having members adapted'to be engaged by said hooks; an arm fulcrumed on the frame and having a toothed blade, said blade adapted to remove the bagasse from the stalk carried by the clamp; a spring normally holding said blade in engagmg position; and a rod and lever con nectecl to said blade arm for moving said blade out of engaging position, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the character described the combination of a supporting frame; a wheel journaled on said frame and having an unbroken periphery; hooks mounted on and projecting beyond the wheel periphery; means for rotating said wheel; a stalk securing clamp having eye members adapted to engage with said hooks and be carried by the wheel; an arm fulcrumed on the frame and having a toothed blade adapted to remove the bagasse from the stalk carried by the clamp; a spring normally holding said blade in engaging position; and a rod and lever connected to said blade arm for moving said blade out of engaging position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
