Description

F. J.'GLOWTH. 01mm LINK. APPLICATION FILED DEQ.8,1911.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
' UNITED STATES PATET on FREDERICK J. GLOWTH, 0F YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF Hi0 HENRY E. SCHLOBOHM,-OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
CHAIN-LINK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. GLow'rH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new f'and useful Chain-Link, of which the followloops and without altering the form of theuniting member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a link, the constituent loops of which are of unbroken contour, saving for alinable openings whereby one link may be assembled with another link.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.-
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 shows in plan, a link constructed in accordance with the present invention, the constituent loops of the link being alined, and in the positions which they will assume when the link is in use; Fig. 2 is a. plan showing the links disposed out of alinement', thereby to open the link for concatenation with'another link; Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line A-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan of one of the link-formin 100 as; and
Fig. 5 is a plan of the other inkorming loop.
In carrying out the invention there are.

ings 3 and 4, as shown at 5 in Fig. 2, whereupon one link may be concatenated with another link.
The openings 3 and 4 in the loops 2 and 1, respectively, are each of less Width than the combined thickness of both loops. Consequently, a pair of concatenated links constructed in accordance with the present invention, can be separated only by alining the openings 3 and 4 of one link, as shown at 5, the, other link being turned about at right angles to the first, so that the portion 6 of one loop,'exposed by the opening 4, may be passed through the alined openings 5. The loops 1 and 2 are connected by a ring 7. This ring .7 slides upon the loops 1 and 2, but fits therearound with suflicient closeness so that the ring may be slid only by the application of an appreciable force. The ring 7 is of such a w dth that it may. be removed through the openings 4 and 3,when the same are alined as shown at 5, the ring 7 normally resting opposite to the openings 3 and 4. The bends 8 of'the loops 1 and 2 tend to limit the sliding movement of the ring 7, and when one link is engaged with another, the rin 7, obviously, will not slide beyond the hen s 8.
It is to be noted that the loops 1 and 2 are imperforate, saving for the openings 3 and 4; consequently, the loops are not weak- Patented Feb. 4,1913.-
ened by openings which are necessary to provide a place of attachment for a rivet or the like, whereby the loops may be slidably connected.
The constituent parts 1, 2; and 7 of the link are freely separable and individually It is to be noted that in assemare required, and no smithwork is necessary. The link herein disclosed, may be used as a repair link in a chain of ordinary construction, or, if desired, the entire chain may be fashioned from links of the sort hereinbefore described. Such a chain will be found useful, particularly, for mooring vessels, since it is possible to freshen the hawse, or to disengage the chains of both bowers, when fouled, simply by opcning'one or more links. l
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is I l. A link comprising as constituent parts,
cooperating loops having alinable openings extended entirely across the loops, and n nien'iber uniting the loops; all of which parts are freely separable.
2. A link comprising cooperating loops having alinnble openings extended entirely across the loops; and a. movable ring through which the loops engaged.
3. A link comprising cooperating loops having alinable openings extended entirely across -the loops; and a movable ring through which the loops are engaged, the ring being removable through the openings, when the openings are alinecl.
4. A; link comprising cooperating loops having nlinable openings extendecl entirely across the loops, the opening in. each loop being of less Width than the combined thickness of both loops; and means for securing the loops together sliclably.
A link comprising cooperating loops nosneei having alinable openings extended entirely across ihe loops, the opening in each loop being of less Width than the combined thickness of both loops; and a ring through which both loops ere engaged.
6. A link comprising cooperaiing loops having alinable openings xtended entirely across the loops, the opening in each loop being of less Width than the combined thickness of both loops; and a ring through which both loops are engaged, the ring being removable through the openings, when the openings are alined.
In testimony that 1 claimthe foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixerl my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
FREDERICK J. GLOWTH.
