Y Letters Patent No. 105,182, dated July 12,1870.
APPARATUS FOR SPONG-ING- CLOTH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, ISAAC A. DAVIS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania,'have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Sponging Cloth, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects. lof the Invention.
`'My invention relates to the combined arrangement of a series of adjustable rods or bars within a close portable case, having an adjust-able cover or lid, and
being in communication with a steam-generator inr such a manner that the Sallie vcan be readily introduced through the usual doors into any suitable room of a tailoring establishment or clothiug-manufacturing house, the object being to enable the proprietor or manager to sponge his cloths or goods by steamin a perfect manner, with facility and economy, and uur" General Description.
A l5 1s a rectangular case or box, made of tin-plate, and should be thirty-two inches wide, about thirtynine inches deep, 'and not more than forty inches long,
and fitted with a removable cover, C. 1
In one side of thesaid case, and close'to its bottom, a stcain-conducting'pipe, D, is inserted by one of its ends, while its otherfend communicates withany suitable steamfenerator'E, and in the bottom of the said case there is a small opening,.F,-Jt`or the escape of the water of condensed steam.
Along ou the innerside of each of the two sides of a' b of the` case al strip, G, is fixed, which is provided with a series of corresponding notches or holes for the reception and support of the ends of the adjustable rods H H in hoiizontal pgsitions, parallel with each other, and at about one and a quarter inch apart, more or less (See fig. 2.)
In using -this apparatus the whole piece of cloth, I,
to be sponged is hung in open or separate successive folds upon the cross-rods H H, so as to be suspended from the said bars or rods without any contact of the surfaces of the cloth with each other, and so, also, as to extend downward to about three or four inches from the bottom of the case A B, substantially as shown in the drawings.
The cover C is then applied, and steam introduced, through the pipe D, during ten or vfifteen minutes, which length of time will be suicient t-o effect the spongiug of the whole of the goods in a thorough manner. The steam is now to be shut off, the lid or cover C removed, and the cloth taken out, which in a few minutes becomes dry and ready for rolling or cutting.
yThe advantages of this apparatus are- First, the cloth is sponged thoroughly and nuiformly.
Second, the spougiug ise'ected in a very few minutes. Y
can be readily carried by hand from one room to another, and cau'be easily operated hy one person so as to sponge twelve hundred yards per day.
I claim as my inventionl The portable sponging-apparatus, consisting of the case A -B and its cover C, the notched strips G G and adjustable rods H H, the water-escape opening F, and the steam-conducting pipe A1),the said parts being constructed and arranged, iu relation to each other and. to any' suitable external steam-generator, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbcfore described aud set forth.
