The reference numeral 1 denotes a portion of a door having the edge thereof provided with a mortise or recess 2 to accommodate a rectangular lock casing 3, said casing being retained within the door by a face plate 4:, screwed or otherwise connected, as at 5 to the door. The plate at has bolt openings G and 7 and a latch opening 8. The sides of the door 1 are provided with escutcheon plates 9 screwed or otherwise connected as at 10 to the door. The plates 9 have openings 11 in communication with openings 12 and 13 provided therefor in the door 1 and the lock casing 3. The plates 9 have key openings 14 in communication with similar openings 15 in the side walls of the casing 3, these openings permitting of a key 16 being inserted in the lock casing 3. The plates 9, the door 1 and the casing 3 support a knob spindle 17 having knobs 18. The spindle 17 within the casing 3 is provided with oppositely disposed lugs 18 for shifting a spring pressed latch 19 that extends through the opening 8. The latch 19, the spindle 17 and the remainder of the latch operating mechanism is of the ordinary and well known type common to various types of door locks. I do not claim the latch mechanism as my invention and have simply illustrated the same to identify its location relatively to the other mechanism of the lock.
Arranged within the openings 12 are permutation mechanisms, each mechanism comprising a barrel 20 having the outer end thereof provided with a peripheral flange 21 that is notched or roughened, as at 22 whereby the barrel can be easily revolved. The inner end of the barrel has an integral gear wheel 23 and arranged within the barrel is a revoluble tubular operating member 24. The outer end of the member 24 has a peripheral flange 25 that is. notched or roughened, as at 26. The operating member 24 has a longitudinal slot 27 at the inner end thereof and oppositely disposed lugs 28. Mounted upon the inner end of the member 24 is a cap 29 provided with openings 30 to receive the lugs 28. The cap 29 is slotted, as at 31 and the caps of the operating members are connected by a transverse pin 32 that is eccentrically mounted relatively to said caps. Each of the caps 29 is provided with a lug or hearing 62 projecting from the edge thereof and to which the pin 32 is connected. The pin 32 by such an arrangement is eccentrically mounted relatively to the caps 29.
Movably mounted in the operating member 24 is a cylindrical actuating member 33 having the inner end thereof provided with a beveled blade 34 and the outer end thereof notched or roughened, as at 35. The member 33 has a pin 36 extending into the slot 27 of the operating member 24, said pin preventing the actuating member from rotating therein. The blade 34 of the actuating member extends into the slot 31 of the cap 29 and interposed between said cap and the actuating member 33 is a coiled compression spring 37, said spring engaging in a socket 38 provided therefor in the actuating member 33. The tension of the spring 37 retains the outer end of the member 33 normally protruding from the operating member 24. The plates 9 and the outer exposed ends of the members 24 and barrels 20 are provided with numerals, as shown in Fig. 1 and the operating member 24 and the barrel 20 can be revolved to produce different combinations of numerals, one of which places certain mechanisms in operatable po sition, as will hereinafter appear. The side wall of the casing 3, adjacent to the upper end thereof, is provided with a transverse shaft 39 and revolubly mounted upon said shaft is the hub 40 of a double gear wheel 41 that meshes with the gear wheels 23 of the barrels 20 of the permutation mechanism. The inner side of the double gear wheel 41 has a radially disposed crank 42 and when the gear wheel 41 is revolved by either of the permutation mechanisms, the crank 42 engages the notched end 43 of an arm 44 pivotally connected by a pin 45 to the wall of the casing 3. The lower edge of the arm 44 has a notch 46 to receive the connecting pin 32 of the permutation mechanisms. To prevent the double gear wheel 41 from freely revolving the wall of the casing 3 is provided with a compression spring 47 frictionally engaging the hub 40 of said wheel.
Movably mounted between the arm 44 and one of the permutation mechanisms is a cam member 48 having an offset end 49 that is slotted, as at 50 and retained in engagement with the wall of the casing 3 by a pin 51. The cam member 48 is provided with a slot 53 having the walls thereof curved and with a slot 54 having the walls thereof straight, the straight slot being located in proximity to the curved slot.
The wall of the casing 3 is provided with a guide rib 55 for a locking bolt 56 adapted to extend through the openings 7. The locking bolt is limited in its outward movement by a shoulder 57 and the upper edge of the bolt is cut away, as at 58 to provide clearance for the permutation mechanism. One side of the bolt 56 is cut away, as at 59 to provide clearance for a detent 60 that is arranged between the bolt and the sidewall of the casing. The detent has a concave upper edge 61 adapted to be engaged by lug or bearing 62 carried by one of the caps 29. The lower edge of the detent 60 has a strap with a tooth 64 at one end thereof and a barrel 65 at the opposite end, said barrel being pivotally supported by a pin 66, carried by the side wall of the casing. Connected to the strap 63 adjacent to the barrel 65, as at 67 is a flat compression spring 68 that rests upon a pin 69, carried by the side wall of the casing. The tooth 64 normally engages one or the other of notches 70 and 71 formed in the lower edge of the bolt 56. Pivotally connected to the bolt 56, adjacent to the shoulder 57, by apin 72 is a latch 73 having the upper edge thereof provided with a small notch 74 and a large notch 75. The lower edge of the latch is cut away, as at 76 and is engaged by the end of a coiled compression spring 77 carried by the bolt 56. The free end of the latch 73 has a lug 78 adapted to engage a check pin 79, carried by the inner end of the bolt 56. Engaging in the small notch 74 of the latch 73 is a pin 80 carried by a resilient catch 81 having the lower end thereof secured, as at 82 to the wall of the casing 3. The upper end of the catch is curved, as at 83 and extending under the curved end 83 of the catch and adapted to elevate the same and move the pin 80 of the catch out of the notch 74 of the latch 73 is the beveled end 84 of a releasing member 85. The'member 85 is slidably mounted between guide pins 86, carried by the side wall of the casing 3 and said member is pivotally connected by a pin 87 to a lever 88 pivotally connected, as at 89 to the side wall of the casing. The opposite end of the lever is retained normally upon the reduced end 49 of the cam member 48 by a compression spring 90, carried by the side wall of the casing.
Before describing the remainder of the lock, particularly the key operated mechanism, it is thought best to consider the operation of the mechanism thus far described, as the key operated mechanism is somewhat similar to that operated by the permutation devices. The lock can be manipulated from either side of the door and the first op eration is that of rotating the barrel 20, which through the medium of the gear wheel 23 imparts a rotary movement to the double gear wheel 41. As the double gear wheel 41 is moved the crank 42 thereof engages the notched end of the arm 44 and elevates said arm, the notch 46 releasing the connecting pin 32, The connecting pin 32 is looked, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings and the operating member 24 cannot be revolved. In Fig. 10 the arm 44 is shown as elevated, releasing the connecting pin 32.
The next operation is to rotate the operating member 24c;-the barrel 20 and the double gear wheel 41 being held stationary by the compression spring 47. As the operating member 24 is moved the connecting pin 32 is shifted, also the actuating member 33 by reason of the pin 36 extending into the slot 27 of the operating member 2 1. As the pin 32 is shifted the cam member 18 is moved, as shown in Fig. 10, placing the straight slot 54 in registration with the slot 31 of the cap 29, whereby the blade 34: of the actuating member 33 can enter the straight slot 54:. The next operation is that of pushing upon the actuating member 33. The beveled blade 34 of this member passes into the straight slot 54 engages the end wall of the slot and elevates the cam member 48. The upper re duced end 49 of said member rocks the lever 88, lowers the releasing member 85 and raises the curved end of the catch 81. The pin 80 of said catch is carried out of the notch 74 of the latch 7 3 and the spring 77 elevates the free end of the latch, as best shown in Fig. 11. The upward movement of the latch is limited by the check pin 79. The next operation is that of again moving the operating member 24 whereby the connecting pin 32 will be shifted downwardly in the curved slot and ride into the large notch 75 of the latch 73. As the connecting pin rides into the large notch 7 5 of the latch 73, the lug or bearing 62 carried by one of the caps 29 engages the detent lowering said detent, placing the spring 68 under tension and moving the tooth 6 out of the notch 71 of the locking bolt 56. A further movement of the operating member 24: causes the connecting pin 32 to shift the latch 73 and as said latch is connected to the bolt 56, the bolt is shifted to a retracted position within the casing 3, as best shown in Fig. 12. Such movement of the operating member 24 releases the detent 60 and the tooth 6% immediately engages in the notch 70 locking the bolt 56 in a retracted position. The movement of the operating member 24 is permitted by the actuating member 33 assuming its normal position immediately upon the cam 48 having been elevated and the latch 73 is elevated by the spring 77 before the cam member 48 is released by the actuating member 33. To shift the bolt 56 to a locked position, the operating member 2 1 is revolved in the opposite direction, whereby the detent 60 will be lowered, the bolt 56 shifted, the latch 73 lowered and locked by the pin 80 of the catch 81 and a further movement of the operating member carries the connecting pin to the closed end of the curved slot 53. The barrel 20 can then be moved whereby the arm 44: will be released to lock the connecting pin 32, as shown in Fig. 9.
The key operated mechanism is located in the lower part of the casing 3 and comprises a bolt 91 very similar to the bolt 56, a spring pressed latch 92 very similar to the latch 73, a spring pressed detent 93 similar to the detent 60, and a catch 94 similar to the catch 81, said catch having a pin 95 engaging in a notch provided therefor in the latch 92. Pivotally connected to the side wall of the casing 3 by a pin 96 is a link 97 retained normally in engagement with a check pin 98 by a compression spring 99, carried by the side wall of the casing 3. Pivotally connected to the link 97 by a pin 100 is an ac tuating member 101 supported at an angle to the link 97 by a flat spring 102, carried by said link. The pin 100 protrudes above the member 101 beneath the catch 94.
The key 16 has a bit 103 and said key can be freely revolved in one direction within the casing 3. When the key is turned to the left or counter clockwise the bit 103 engages the end of the member 101 and said member is lowered together with the link 97. The pin 100 rides into engagement with the curved end of the catch 94 and said catch is elevated whereby the pin 95 will release the latch 92. The latch 92 is lowered and when the key is turned clockwise, the detent 93 is elevated releasing the bolt 91 and said bolt is shifted to a retracted position by the key engaging the latch 92. It is thought that the operation of shifting the bolt 91 to an extended position will be apparent in view of the foregoing, as the member 101 can readily shift as the key is turned counter clockwise.
lVhat I claim is A lock comprising a casing, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a spring pressed detent holding said bolt in adjusted position, a latch pivotally connected to said bolt, a catch holding said latch normally stationary, means for engaging said catch to release said latch, and means including permutation mechanisms for actuating the last mentioned means and shifting said latch and said bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
