Description

N.PETERS. PHDTO-LITHDGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN CAMPION, OF WOBURN CENTRE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR TANNING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 05, 169, dated July 12, 1370.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GAMPION, of Woburn Centre, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement' in Tanning; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to tanning; and it consists in certain improvements on the mechanism usually employed for that purpose, as will be hereinafter clearly specified.
Figure l is a horizontal section of one arrangement of means for carrying out my invention and a plan view of another means, also a plan view of a pump for forcing the liquor; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A isa case or box, of any suitable construction, having a perforated top, B, and above it a covering of leather, C. This case is inclosed in another larger one, D, and'is provided with an escape-pipe', E.
F is a pump, connected by a pipe, G, with the case D, and arranged, in connection with the vat containing the tanning-liquor, to draw it therefrom and force it through the kpipe G into the case D.
H is a collapsible pressure-regulatorplaced on the topof case D to receive the liquor and :regulate the pressure by the weights I. It is provided with a valve, K, which will let the air escape when the liquor is forced into case D, but will bevraised by the liquor and prevent the escape of it.
The skins to be tanned are placed on the perforated top B of the case A, and the case D is filled with liquor and a pressure maintained thereon by the pump, which causes the liquorto percolate through the pores' of the skins, and thereby impregnate the substance and produce the required effect in a few hours which it takes weeksy to do in the lordinary way. rThe liquor is conveyed away by the escape-pipe E. That part of the hide not directly over the holes will be tanned in the same time with that which is, as the pressure will force the liquor through the 'pores to the holes in all directions. As some of the holes will be exposed to the liquor, or not covered by the hides, a soft covering, L, will prevent or lessen the loss of the mechanical power. rIhe pressure of the liquor will hold the said covering down when required, and not affect that part of the hide which it may cover.
M, Fig. l, represents the skin sewed up to form a bag, into which the liquor may be forced by the pump through a pipe, N, having a-plug, O, to regulate or stop the iiow. This plan may be usedto some advantage in special cases.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The case A, perforated top B, and valved leather cover L, all constructed and relatively arranged in the casing D, as and for the purposespecifled.
2. The escape-pipe E G and pump F, ar ranged with the case D, as shown and described.
3. The collapsible pressure regulator' H, weights I, and valve K, relatively arranged as and for the purpose Specified.
' JOHN CAMPION.
