'IILTING DEVICE FOR CONCRETE-MIXERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 28, 1913.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, EDWARD W. BRAcKnN- BURY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Milwaukee, in the countyv of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Tilting Device for Concrete-.Mixers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in means for tilting the drum of a concrete mixer-to discharge the same and to return the d rum to-its initial position; and the objects of my invention are to make a simple, durable and eflicient machine for this purpose which shall fully satisfy all the limitations imposed on a machine of this character. I- attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figural shows an end elevation of the machine applied to a concrete mixer. Fig.
2 shows a side elevation of the machine, the parts involved in the tilting mechanism being shown in section taken on a vertical central plane.
The same reference characters refer to the same plarts in the different figures.
is t e drum of the concrete-mixer aty to the gear ring (2) by which it is tac rotated, supported on rollers (3), only one bein shown, and. guided b edge rollers(4) is carried by, and tiltab 'n only one being shown, and.the'
me structural frame 5). Thisdframe e aroun trundrum is rotated by means of the shaft (7) tutes arotating concrete mixer which .45
which is to be tilted is placed a gear (13) which drives and operates the tilting mechanism through the spur gear (14) and its attached miter gear (15) rotating on the pm (16) which is secured in the bracket (17) which forms a part of, or is attached to the pedestal (11). Also supported in hearings on the bracket (17) is the clutch shaft (18) on which the miter gears (19) and (20) revolve loosely in opposite directions, but are restrained from longitudinal movement along the shaft. Each of these gears has its hub formed to constitute a tapering friction member over which the hollow or cuplike friction members (21) and (22) are adapted to engage. These cup members are splined on the clutch shaft to revolve therewith'and are movable along the shaft by split collars (23) and (24-) engaging grooves in the hubs of the cup members, and also pivoted in the levers (25) and (26). It is obvious that as the gears (19) and (20) with their friction members revolve 1n 0p- Application flled January 29, 1912. Serial No. 874,021. S 1 .1.
osite directions, the shaft (18) will revolve in one direction or the other according to which cup frictionmember is engaged, or will not revolve at all when both cup fric: tion members are disengaged. The gears S25) and (26) on the clutch shaft and screw s aft (27) respectively communicate the movement of the former to the latter. This screw shaft is housed in hearings on the edestal (11), and has in engagement with its threads a nut (28) which is ided by and slidesfreely on a rod (29). lug rojects from this nut and carries an antir'iction roller (30) engaging in a slot or groove (31) in" the bracket (32) which is secured to the swinging trunnioned frame (5). Thus as the nut (28) travels one way or the other along the screw, it swings the frame (5) and drum (1) in a corresponding direction. In order to limit the motion of the nut and consequently the tilting of the drum, the nut carries a projecting finger (33) which engages alternately with two tap ts .(34) and (35) which are disposed on a ink 36) connecting the lower ends of the levers 25) and (26), which levers are ivoted on the bracket (17) at fulcrums 37). The tappets (34) and (35) are so disposed that they will be engaged by the finger (33) when the drum is in its limiting positions, and further movement of the nut/disenga s the clutch and the drum remains eitfir tilted or level, in the position in which it was left by the tilting mechanism until the operator, by means of the attached levers (25) and (26), engages theclutch which was disengaged during the previous operation. There are several limitations to which this device-is subjected all of which are perfectly provided for. vThe frame must be locked when the, clutches are disengaged to maintain the drum in exact position for loading" and discharging, and this feature is provided for by the screw and nut engagement."
byremoving the gear and attaching .spokelike handles to the'gear I where on the screw shaft (27).
(26) or any- Having now fully described a practical form, which theinvention may take, what I claim as my invention is- '1. In combination with a machine to be tilted, a tilting device comprising a. screw and nut, the latter engaging the part. to be tilted and means for rotating the screw in either direction. Y
2. Incombination with a device to be tilted, tilting means comprising a screw, means for rotating the screw in either direction, and intermediate means engaging the and nut, means for rotating sai noenevis screw and movably engaging the part to he tilted at a point remote from the tilting axis. 3. In combination with a' device to be tilted, a tilting device. comprising a screw, means for rotating the screw in either direction, and intermediate means engaging the screw and movably engaging parallel shoulders on the"part to be tilted.
4. In combination with a device to be tilted, a tiltingdevice comprising a screw and nut, means for rotating the screw in either direction, and shoulders on the tilting part engagingsaid nutu v 5. In combination with a machine to be tilted, a tilting device comprisi a screw either direction, means on the part to be tiltedadapted to engage said nut, andmeans screwiin for disengaging said screw from its actuat mg means." g I 6. In combination with a machine to betilted, g tilting device comprisln a screw and nut, ,means for-rotating sai screw in either direction, means on the part to be tilted ada ted to engage saidnut, and means.v
actuated 3 said nut-for said screw from its actuating means, 1
