CHARLES L. ALLEN, 0F FLAT ROCK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM SHIGK, or SAME PLACE,
Lam Patent No. 105,158, dated July 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAN-CASE FOR. GRAIN AND SEED-SEPARATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
have invented a new and useful Improvement; in Dust- Fans for Grain and Seed-Separators; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, being a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my device, and
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of.this invention relates to theemployment of a rotary fan, in connection with clover-hulling and grain-separating machines, for carrying the dust arising from the seed or grain, in process of hulling or thrashing, away from the person feeding the cylinder.
It consists in providing the fan-case of a clover-hulling or grain-thrashing machine with certain grooves, by the adj nstmeut within which of movable-boards, in the operation of hulling or thrashing, a blast is directed from said fan, and the dust is driven away from the operator.
In separating and cleaning grain and seeds, espe-' cially in hulling clover-seed, clouds of dust are constantly thrown off by the action of the separating-cylinder, arising in the face ,ot the attendant, to his great annoyance and discomfort, and endangering his health, in spite of all possible precautions in the way of veils, sponges, and goggles, now commonly used for the purpose.
In the drawing- A represents a fan-case, open underneath, and sits on the frame of the clover-hulling or grain-thrashing machine, directly over the separating-cylinder.
B is' a fan mounted on a shaft, a, rotating in proper hearings in the ends of the case, said shaft being rotated at a high speed by a belt from any convenient pulley on the machine, passing around its pulley b.
c are grooves across the front ends of the case, which may be closed by inserting the front board 0.
(Z are similar grooves across the back part of the case, which may be closed in like manner while cl are grooves, in which the back-board D is inserted, when it is desired to discharge the dust from clover-seed behind the case, or, by inserting the backboard in the other grooves, 41, the end is closed up, and the dust is then thrown down in the screens of the machine below, the fan being rotated in the direction shown by the arrows, (shown in fig. 2,) inwhich the back-board is arranged to discharge the dust, as first mentioned.
If the device is to be attached to a thrashing-machine or separator, the ends of the case A should be provided with suitable openings and slides, as shown in dotted lines in fig. 1. The front end of the case is then closed by the board 0, and the back end by inserting the board D in the grooves (Z. Then, by open iug the slides referred to, and rotating the fan in a reverse direction from that shown, a strong blast is directed down on the thrashing-cylinder, preventing the dust from rising up to annoy the attendant.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is
Providing the fan-blower case A with grooves, c, d, and d, and adjustable boards or slidesC and I), whenarranged and operating as 'herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHAS L. ALLEN.
