Specification of Letters Patent. Patentqgd Jam, 28, 1913, ap ncandn filed July 30, 1210. Serial No. 57%,717.
To allwrhom z'tmay concern: sliding latch bolt or dog 23' provided with Be it known that I, ALFRED H. Knion'r, a spring 24 hearing at one end against the a citizen of the United States, and resibracket and at the other end against a flange dent of Detroit, \Vayne county," State of, 25 on the latch bolt.
Michigan, have invented certain new and i latch bolt has secured to it a headed pin useful Improvements in Coup Wind- 26 upon which is mounted a locking device gliields, of which the following is a speci- 27 provided with a threaded portion 28 cation.
' which screws into the bracket 22 and is This invention relates to Windshields for arranged to bear against the endof the latch motor vehicles, and particularly to wind bolt. The brackets or bars 19 are each prosliields. for coups or that type of motor vided with a plurality of recesses 29 which are arranged to be engaged by the rounded ends of the latch bolts.
By loosening the locking devices 27, the
latch bolts 23 are held in yielding engagement with the brackets or bars 19. The sash 15 may therefore be swung outwardly and back and the latch bolts will snap into the recesses 2Slito yieldingly hold the sash' in any desired position. After the sash is in position, it may be locked'by screwing up the locking devices 27, whereby the latch bolts will be rigidly held in engagement with the recesses 29 so as to rigidly secure the sash in position. The sash may be moved to an inclined position moved forwardly out of the way and underneath the forward part of the roof 12, and held in that position by means of the combined latch and locking devices. A pair of auxiliary latches 30 of any suitable and Well known construction may be provided to additionally secure the sash 15 in position between the side members 13.
It will thus be seen that this invention provides a construction which is simpleand easy to manipulate. \Vhen the locking devices 27 are loosened, the sash may be moved to different positions, and the yielding latch The objects of this invention are to construct a wind' shield which is simple in construction and which may be manipulated from the inside of the vehicle and from the drivers seat.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of apart of a motor vehicle, showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is another detail sectional View.
The motor vehicle shown in Fig. 1 is of the inclosed type in which the front of the body is closed and provided with side doors.
In the accompanying drawings, 10 designates the body, 11 one of the side doors, and 12 the top or roof. Apair of side members or supports 13 forming part of the body have supported between them the lower sash 14 of the wind shield. The upper sash 15 of the wind shield is hinged at its upper edge near the roof so as to swing forwardly from a position between the side members 13. The upper sash is provided with a ledge or stop 16 which abuts against the lower sash and limits the inward movement of the upper sash.
A pair of brackets 17 are secured to the roof 12 by means of suitable bolts 18 and a pair. of brackets or segmental bars 15) are pivoted to the brackets 17 at their upper ends by means of bolts 20 passing through the brackets. The segmental brackets 19 are thus suspended from the roof and extend downwardly and through openings 21 in the upper sash 15. A pair of clamping brackets 22 are secured to the inside faces of the sash and are each arranged to receive a ing connection may he made rigid by simply turning the knurled heads of the locking devices 27. The sash can therefore be adjusted and locked in any position with one hand since the latch bolts will hold the sash in position until it can be locked. All the manipulations can be accomplished from the inside of the vehicle in view of the fact that both the latch and locking devices are located on the inside face of the movable sash.
Tt is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction withciut departing from this invention, and it is,
and may be The lower end'of the 5 bolts will yieldingly retain it, and the yieldtherefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1'. In a wind shield for motor vehicles, the combination with a support and a swinging sash supported therefrom, of a bracket suspended from the support in engagement With the sash, and having recesses at intervals therein, a yieldable stop on the inner side of the sash engagingthe bracket and adapted to enter the recesses to yieldably hold the sash in desired position, and adjustable I means rotatable and axially movable relative to the bolt for rendering the stop rigid.
2. In a motor vehicle, .the combination with the roof or top, of a sash hinged thereto rearwardly of the forward end of the roof; :1 segmental bracket hinged to the top forwardly of the sash, and passing through one of the side rails of the latter, a latch secured on the inner side of the sash and having a bolt adapted to engage said bracket, 2.
' spring for normally 'pressing said boltinto engagement with said bracket, and a screw device movable relative to the bolt and adapted to force said bolt against said bracket to rigidly secure the sash 'to the i bracket. l
3. The combination of a relatively fixed member, a swinging sash member, and means for securing sald sash 1n various positions and comprising a body secured to one of said members, a bolt in said body, a spring for pressing said bolt into engagement with the other of said members, a screw engaging said bolt and adapted when moved relative to the bolt in one direction to rigidly hold the latter in engagement With said member and when moved in the opposite direction to withdraw said bolt from said member.
4. The LOIllbllltLtlOIl of a swinging sash, a segmental bracket passing through one of the rails of said sash, and means for adjustably securing said sash to said bracket and including a bolt carried by said sash, a spring for normally pressing said bolt against said bracket, and a screw having sliding engagement with said bolt and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. O.
