ELECTROTHERAPEUTIGAL APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALBERT W. Nn r no, a citizen of the'lUnited States Of'Am611Cfl,'
residing at No. 1610 Eighteenth avenue, in the city of Seattle, county of King, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Apparatus or Machine, which I have entitled Electrotherapeutical Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electro-therapeutic devices, or devices which employ electricity, light and heat in their various forms as agencies for the beneficial treatment of the human body for the relief and cure of ailments to whlch it is subjected. My device is equally beneficial in its-result upon the nerves and mental condition of the patient as upon his physical condition.
In the drawings T have shown my invention in the form which is now preferred by me. I
Figure 1 shows my device in perspective, from the head end, the couch and the body of the patient being within the casing. Fig. 2 is a perspective from the same end but viewed from the opposite side, the couch being withdrawn.- Fig. 3 is a longitudinal,
sectional elevation, the couch being within the casing.) Fig. 4C is an elevation of the head end of the device. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional plan, the plane of the section being above the couch, which is within the casing. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional vlew. I
The construction of my deyice as embodied in. the preferred form shown in these drawings is as follows. I provide a casing or outer shell of such length that it will receive the prone body of the patient, and of a diameter such as will receive a couch and the patient thereon and also provide ample room for the therapeutic apparatus by which the electrical, light and heat eff fects are produced. This casing 5, is preferably made of an insulating material, for
- which purpose wood is satisfactory. I have shown this casing as of an octagonal shape, the ends being closed except that provision is made at the head end .for the entrance of the couch and patient, and doors are provided at the foot end for convenience in manipulating and caring for the apparatus employed. The opening at the head end may be closed when desired by one or both of two curtains 7 and 7, inward from the latter and .herein shown ALBERT W. NEITRQ, 01F S'EhTTLE, WASHINGTON.

as provided with button holes 7 adapted to be engaged with buttons secured to the.
casing head. The other curtain 7*, is herein shown as rolling up after the manner of the common window shades. These curtains have notches in their [lower edge, adaptedto fit. about the neck of the patient so that the head. may b permitted to. remain outside the cabinet and not subjected to the influences applied to the body. Upon the inner surface of each of the octagonal faces is placed a mirror or mirrors 4, which mirrors are so shaped and placed, that each section is, as a whole, convex inwardly, thus forming sections 01? cylindrical or prismatic surfaces extending lengthwise the chamber. These mirrors, as shown, consist of segments of cylindrical'surfaces. Between these mirrors are thus formed valleys or troughs in which are placed electric li hrs 12 an electrodes 15. The lights 12 may be any type or combinations of types which it may be desired to use, their choice being determined by the efi'ectproduced by the diflerent types and the result desired in the particular case. These electric lamps maybe connected up in difierent circuits, so that a single type or a combination of more than one type may be used at the sametime, as desired. I also provide lamps. and 169-. trodes of corresponding character and variety at the ends of the casing. I also ro:- vide a certain number of these lights, as 12, located at the, end, or wherever may be most convenient, with screens or slides 12 of colored glass, which may be removed the applicationand distribution of the electricity'may be controlled.
In each valley or trough, I place a series of electrodes or electrical discharging points 1%, which are used in connection with a galvanic battery or other source of high tension electricity, either directly, through the intermediation of a coil or other transformer device, so that discharges of static or-galvanic electricity may be produced within the chamber and the patient may be subjected to the influences of electric vibrations of high tension. The patient when under treatment lies within the'center of an area which is saturated with these high tension electric waves. These static electrodes are so connected with the source whose body occupies the longitudinal axis of the chamber, is thus in the axis of the field of forceproduced by these discharges.
\Vithin the chamber is a trackway 2, adjacent and parallel with the axis of the chamber. Upon this trackway travels a couch, or body support 1, the two being sp proportioned and located that the body of the patient will occupy substantially the axis of the chamber when lying upon the couch 1. This trackway extends slightly without the head end of the chamber and exterior thereto is provided with supporting legs 3 extending to the floor. Between the side bars of the couch l is constructed or supported a net work of webs or straps 17, so placed as to form an open work support for the body, thus contributing to the comfort and complete relaxation of both the physical body and the mind, in which condition the patient is most susceptible to the beneficial influences.
The couch is supported upon the trackway by wheel's 18, which may be mounted upon either the trackway or the couch. I have shownthem as upon the couch. The outer or head end of the couch has depending legs 1, provided at their lower end with rollers 20, engaging and rolling upon the floor. This end is also provided with a head rest 19, adjustable in height and angle, by means of the perforated segment bars 21 and pins which may be inserted in any one of the holes in the bars. At each side of the couch near its foot, is a standard 44, which carries a bar 43, which extends lengthwise the couch and may be adjusted in said standard to vary its position. The
forward or free end of these rods carry plates 9, adapted to serve as terminals for galvanic or induced currents and to be engaged by the feet of the patient. The use of these is at all times under complete control of the patient. The couch is provided with contact members 10 and 11, at its head end, and the end of the casing, or any other suitable stationary member, is provided with complemental contact members 10 and 11, in position to be engaged by the members 10 and 11 when the couch is rolled into place within the casing. The terminals 9 are connected with the contact members 10 and hand electrodes 8 are connected with the terminals 11, whereby the patient is able to apply the electric current to any part of the body. This application may be made lightly or with'force as desired.
What I claim as my invention is:
In an electro-therapeutical apparatus, in combination, a casing forming a chamber adapted to receive a prone body, a series of light reflectors extending lengthwise the chamber and carried upon its inner walls, said reflectors being disposed to form inwardly convex ridges and concave valleys or troughs extending lengthwise the casing,
electric lights and discharge-producing elec-' trodes alternating with each other and occupying said valleys or troughs, means for controlling the energization of said lights and discharge-producing electrodes, a trackway extending lengthwise the chamber adj acent its axis, a couch adapted to travel in and out upon said trackway and having downwardly extending legs exterior to the casing and engaging the floor, and contact electrodes carried by said couch and adapted to apply electricity to different parts of the body.
