Be it known that I, ALBERT A, Gam rs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of I-ngham and State 'of Michigan, have invented a new and useiiul Improvement 1n Chiropractic Tables, 0t
which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in the device disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1029751, dated June 18, 1912 and issued to me for an in'iproved chiropractic table, and its purposes are to improve the operation of the said table in use and to better adapt it for the various purposes for which such a device is employed. I attainthese purposes by the means shown in the accompanying. drawing.-; in which- Figure 1. is an elevation of my improved table taken from the side. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are details illustrating various features of: the construction.
' The general construction and o )er ation of my table is sufliciently set forth in the Letters Patent above referred to, and I will only describe the novel features of my present application.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the head; portion of my table and 2 the foot, which in the present instance are shown support-v ed on legs 3, but may be supported in, any suitable manner, for instance, by box or panel sides as shown in the Letters Patent above referred to. If the supporting legs are used they are preferably braced at the bottom and the head and foot portions keptat the proper distance from each other by longitudinally extending strips 4. The shelf 5, attached to the head portions of the table,
is substantially the same as in the above mentioned patent, except that I, at present, prefer to hinge it somewhat closer to the inner edge of the head port-ion, as, for example, at 6, as shown in Fig. 1. 'llhetoggle 7 and its brace 8 are also substantially the same as in the above patent, but the cross bar 10 is made narrower and the bar 8 simply passes over the top'of it, el'igaging with the upper edge as shown in. Fig. 1. A chain or other flexible stop 11 extends from the cross bar 10 to one member of the toggle 7, so as to prevent the toggle from straight.- ening too much when the shelf 5 is raised. to a lever 13, which has one extremity pivotally attached at 1 1 tothe-framc of the table and the other end free to pass along a bar 15, prmided pith pins 10 adapted to engage the it 1.3, and thus permit any desired dc of. tension to be placed upon the springs 11- will also be noticed that by reason of the peculiar construction of the lever 13, the springs nearer the free end of the lever are more alter-led by its motion, also that by a sufficient motion of thelever 13, the springs '12 ,which are located, nearest to the movable ei'tdof the lever, might be relieved from all tension and instead lefthanging loosely so that when the lever was drawn from this position in the direction proper to tighten the springs, the springs would successively be placed under tension after which time the tension would be increased gradually on all the springs, but most rapidly on those nearest the movable end of the lever. The result of this is to 'give a much wider range of tension to the springs than would be otherwise obtainable. By the use of these springs any desired amount of lifting force can be applied to the shelf 5, whiclrwill thus furnishan elastic support of just the amount desired to the body when the patient is placed upon the table and the brace 8 released.
In my improved table the brace 8 is con trolled by levers 17. ()ne of these levers is preferably mounted at each side of the shelf 5 as shown in Fig.1. The levers themselves are shown more fully in Figs. 2 and 3. Cords 18 extend from the extremities of each of these levers over pulleys 19 to the brace 8, whichniay thus be raised bypressure upward on the end 20 of either of the levers, the two levers working ilnlependently of. each other. Ordinarily but one of the levers will be used, the twobeing employed to make it. convenient to operate the shelf 1 from either side of the table if desired The levers 17 are sustained in the raised portion by catches 21, shown in detail in Fig. 2. These catches are essentially simply bell crank levers, one extremity ofv which. is adapted to support the end 20 of the levers 17 and the other to be moved by the fin er. I have found it desirable to support the foot slide 22, shown in my previous construction as 15, by the use of a leg 23, pro- --vided with a caster 24, running on a track 25, which is parallel to the motion of the slide itself, thus serving to support the foot slide, without, in any way interfering with its action.

3. In a table of the character described, the combination of a stationary head 01'- tion; a middle portion adapted to be ra sed and lowered; a toggle for raising and lowering said middle portion; a plurality of springs acting upon said tog la in such a manner as to tend to raise said middle portion, and means for successively applying tension to'said springs, said last mentioned means comprising a lever having one extremity of each of said springs attached'to it intermediate its extremities, one extremity of said lever being ivotally attached to the frame of said tabha and the other being rovided with a handle, and means for lock ing said lever in any desired position.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a foot portion supplied with a stationary top and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top bridging the gap between said midv dle portion and said footportion, and a leg attached tosaid movable slide so as to travel therewith.
6. In a device of the character described,

and a track on which said wheel travels.

In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top; a middle portion adapted to be raised and lowered; a toggle supporting said middle port-ion; a releasableilock for said toggle, and a releasable lock for preventing said first mentioned look from acting when said shelf is raised.

In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top; a shelf hinged to said top; a toggle supporting said shelf; a releasa 1e lock or said toggle, and releasable means for preventing said lock from acting when said shelf is raised, said means comprising a lever operatively connected to said lock,
and a second lever adapted to engage with;
said first mentioned lever so as to retain said lock in an inoperative position.
10. In a table of the character described, the combination of a stationaryhead ortion; a middle portion adapted to be raised and lowered; means for raising and low. er-
