0. J. PAULSON; RIBBON A'ITAOHMENT FOR TYPE WRITERS. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 20, 1911.

Inventor;
CHARLES J. PAULSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO STERLING TYPEWRITER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
RIBBON ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
To all whom it may camera:
. Be it known that I, CHARLES J. PAULsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon Attachments for Type-Writers, of which the following is a The urpose of my improvem'entis -support upon the machine frame enable t e writing to be visible, by removing the ribbon from the printing position after each character impression is made, and
- to vary the degree of movement of the ribbon carrier according to the color of ink desired to be impressed.
In the drawing accompanying this application: Figure 1: is a side elevation of my improved ribbon carrier and actuating means. Fig. 2: is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3:, is a perspective detail of said carrier, and Fig. 4: is a similar view of one of the slideways. i
In said figures a indicates a ribbon guide, which is mounted in slideways I), and connected to a yoke othat is pivoted at d (to a not shown). Yoke 0 has a tail piece a, which is engaged by an adjustable link 7, said link being pivoted on a rod 9, which is supported between the arms hsaid arms it being pivoted to the machine frame at 2'. As indicated, the finger keys 7' lie transversely across the rod g and depress the latter as theyare themselves depressed. The link f is drawn downwardly with the depression of rod g also the tail piece 6, thus raising the ribbon guide a. The return of the finger key completes the rocking action of the tail piece, yoke and ribbon guide. This return movement is accomplished automatically in any suitable manner upon the release of pressure on the keys as by means of a spring Specification of Letters Patent.

(not shown) bearing against the arms k. The position of link f upon tail piece e determines the degree of movement to be imparted to the ribbon guide. Thus, with the link f at the free end of tail piece 6, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, degree of rocking movement is given the ribbon guide. The bi-chrome ribbon carried in the guidemay have its upper portion black and its lower portion red, as indicated, and the rocking movement just described may serveto carry the upper or black portion into the printing zone. But, when the link f is in the position indicated in dotted lines, the corresponding stroke of the finger key, acting through link f at a point so much nearer the fulcrum, raises the ribbon guide'to a greater height and brings the lower or red portion of the ribbon into the prmting zone.
Obviously, the device is perfectly automatic, the ribbon entering and leaving the printing zone in a rocking action set up in the manipulation of the finger keys. The determination of the color ink to be employed is effected by moving the link f to one or the other of its two positions.
I claim:
In a typewriter, a ribbon carrier, vertical guides therefor, a' yoke having both arms thereof pivoted intermediate their ends in a horizontal position to rock vertically, the ends of the yoke arms engaging respectively with opposite sides of the ribbon carrier, and a curved bar extending centrally and rearwardly from said yoke; together with a key lever, a transverse shaft adapted to be depressed bysaid hey lever, a vertical link pivoted on said shaft, said vertical link having an aperture to receive 'sa-id curved bar, and a handle whereby said link may be shifted from one end of said bar to the opposite end thereof, to thereby vary the deribbon Signed at the borough of Manhattan, in
the city, county and State of New York this 17th day of January A. D. 1911.
