T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fence posts.

In carrying out my-invention it is my purpose to provide a post for wire fences having means whereby the wires may be readily inserted within the post and retained therein without danger of accidental removal.

I also aim to provide a metallic fence post of a substantially V-shaped cross sectional formation, the said post having a plurality of horizontally arranged slits or openings and locking members loosely secured to the apex directly above each of the slots, said locking members being adapted to fall by gravity after the wires have been inserted within the slots to retain the wires upon the post, and the slots being of a sufficient length to permit of the operation of the locking elements in order to withdraw the wires from the post when desired.

With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the post constructed in accordance with the present invention, and illustrating the method of inserting one of the wires and also showing one of the wires in position upon the post. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the post. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation taken upon an enlarged scale.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral l designates the improved post. This post is preferably formed from a single sheet of metal, which is centrally bent upon itself to provide a structure which is substantially V-shaped in cross sect-ion. The post 1 may be, and preferably is, provided with a base of plastic material 2, and the said post is also formed with a plurality of spaced cut-away portions 3, terminating in eyes or annular openings 4t. These openings extend horizontally from the apex or front of the post toward the rear or sides thereof, and the upper portion provided by the said openings is flared as designated by the numeral 5. Directly above the flared edge of the apex the post is formed with spaced openings or perforations 6, the said perforations being adapted to receive the hooks 7 of securing members 8. Each of these securing members is constructed of a single strand of suitable wire, and the body portion of the securing elements is of a sufficient length to close t-he horizontal openings at the angle of the post. rIhe securing elements are also of a sufficient length to be swung rearwardly away from the openings so that the fence wire 8 may be readily removed from the post when desired.

The wires 9 normally contact with the depending portions of the securing elements, but when it is desired to remove any of the wires the said wire is forced rearwardly into the eyes and the securing member is swung as just described. By providing the front of the post with flared or under cut portions it will be noted that the loops of the retaining or securing elements are brought out of the path of the slots or openings, when the wire is to be inserted within the said slots or openings, so as to form no impediment to the passage of the wire through the openings, and it is to be understood that the body or engaging port-ion of each of the elements is of a suflicient weight to fall by gravity to cover the openings to secure the wire when once positioned within the slots of the posts.

I-Iaving thus described the invention what I claim is A fence post, comprising a member substantially V-shaped in cross section, the apex or front of the post as well as the angular sides thereof being formed with horizontally arranged slots terminating in substantially cylindrical openings, the upper edge of the slots being flared or rounded upwardly upon the apex of the post, the said rounded or flared portions having perforations thereabove, retaining elements, each of said I'e- In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature taining elements comprising a loop engaged in presence of two Witnesses.
