RAILJOINT.
Specification of vLetters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14., 1913.
original application ined July lilou, serial No. 636,423. Divided and this appli'atn med January zo,
"l" 1912. Serial No. 672,274.
To all whom 'it may concern lic it known that I, Anni-:rrr DlLLoN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Aitch. in the count v of Monroe and State of Ohio, have illvellted certain new and useful Improvements ill Rail-Joints, of wllich the following is aspeeiticat-ion, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.
My illvention relates to new \and useful improvemellts ill rail joints, the same being a division of my prior Patent No. 1,010,601, issued Decelnber 5, 1911, and the primary object of the invention is to provide improved means for securely retaining a pair of rails together and to a tie, so that the same will be prevented from casual movement, either laterally or longitudinally.
In addition to the numerous objects of lny prior patent, above noted, a further object-of lthis invelltion resides in the provision of clamping members, pivoted to the tie and having means thereon engaging the ends of the opposed rails to secure the same together and to the. tie proper,
A further object of the invention-resides in providing a pair of clamping members pivoted at their lower ends within openings in the tie, portions of said clamping members being adapted to engage the base anges of the op'posed rails and a still further object of the invention resides in providing stllds on one of the clamping members, which are adapted to extend through openings in the opposed rails and be received in sockets in the opposed clamping nlelnber.
With tllese and other objects in view, my
invention consists in the novel features of constrllction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed ont in the. specification and claims.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a. top plan view showing lllydevice as applied to use, Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the deviceLras seen on line 3 3, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the metallic lining used ln connection with the openings formed ill the tie.
ln carrying out my inventionl shall refer -to the drawing, in which similar reference characters dcsignalxf corresponding arts 'thlrpughollt the several views and in which- 't1 indicates a tic formed of any desired material, preferably cement or the like in Y this instance, adjacent each end ofwhc is provided a pair of rectangular-openings 2 `and 3, said openings being extended ,corn-- to prevent undue wear on the material form' ing' the tie at the openings 2 and 3, I provide a metallic lining therefor, which is particularly shown in Fig. 4. This metallic lining comprises a flat strip 6, which is adapted to rest upon the outer face of-the tie between formed integrally with the side edges -thereof and depending therefrom, a pair of cas-I ings or the like 7 and 8, which are designed to conform in outline to the openings 2and posed. Thislinillg, conlpli'sing the strip 6 inv .the casings 7 and 8, is molded or otherwise fapplied to the t-ie so that said plate 6 will fit flush with the upper face .thereof and the casings 7 and 8, disposed to entirely cover the Efollr walls of said openings 2 and 3, 4wherebyany apparatus which lnay be apvsaid o enings 2 and 3, the same having a f3, within which they are 'adapted to be dis` Y' plied to the tie for the purpose of securinfr the rails thereto will Anot cause injury to sai tie.
adjacent their lower portions, so as to pro' ject beyond the side wa1ls`of/'the tie, are the' respcctivebolts 9 and 10, said bolts being held in position by means`n`f the nuts 1'1 eng'aged -with the free ends thereof and pivotnlly mounted on said bolts, within said openings 2 and 3, are the locking or clamp.- ing members 12'and 13 respectively. These clamping members are substantially inverted L shape in section and when positioned effectively, the inner faces of the vertical portions of said members are adapted to contact with the inner opposed walls of said openings 2 and 3, whilethe horizontal portions of said members are adapted to cn-V. gage the base flangesf the. opposed rails 14 and 15, the under faces of the horizontal portions of said members being hcvfled co incident to the inclinati of said hase "flanges, 1twll he applet-lated that Aby dis# lposing these clampingr members 12 and 13 in 110 'Extending through the openings 2 and 3,
their efreeuvepeeiuene, es shown is' Figs; 1 and 2, in engagement with the ends of the opposed rails 14 and 15, said rails will be.
held to the tie and in order yto retain said rails' in engagementwith one another, the
Aone clamping member 12 has the inner side face thereof provided with a'pair of studs 16 which are adapted vto -extend through openings 17in the webs ofthe opposed rails.
The inner face of the opposed clamp 13T-is also provided with registering sockets 18 to receive the studs 16 after' the openings in the opposed rails and wedge members 19 and 20 are, also. provided and adapted to be Vrespectivelyv entered` in ,the openings 2 and 3, betw'f'aenthe inclined walls bers are forcibly driven in position, will cause the members 12 and Alrto'bind tightly against the base flanges to's'ecurethe rails to the'- tie and simultaneously enga ev the openings 17to secure' the opposed-"ral s in locked engagement with one al'iother.-A The outer face of eachof the and 13, adjacent its upper end-, is. provided 'Y with Va recess '21, within which'. is ldisposed a lug or pin 22, a spring 23 being also dis'-l posed in said recess -between said; member and the rear wallof`l the same, whereby-the' normal tendency of said spring will beto force saidpin outwardly Vbeyond ,theouter face of the clampin member. This recess,
however, is of such epth as .will permit the in 22 to be entirely disposed therewithin, but in order to limit the outward'movement of lthe lu'g or pin 22, an additional pin 24 is extended vertically through said recess 21.
The pin 22 is also provided with a cutaway ortion 25 forming shoulders at each end thereof and between which-the pin 24 is dis# posed. From this construction itwill be readily seen that the outward movement of the pin 22-wil1 be limited and'when in its extended position, as shownin Figs. 1 and 2, -will limit the upward movement ofa wedge member to prevent the total'casual displacement thereof- It will be seen therefore that in placing these wed e members in position, thel same must be orced against the lugs or pi is 22which will yield inst the springs 2l and when once positioned, said wedge members cannot be totally removed, without first forcing said pins within the recesses 21.
When the wedge membersare effectively disposed to force the clampingxmembers i into engagement with'the base flanges of the rails, the upper faces thereofare positioned a very shortI distance above the upper face of the tie, so that considerable difficulty will ordinarily be incurred for the removal passing` through ofsaid Wedge members but in order to aid thisremoval each of the wedge members is provided on its outer face, adjacent the uper face thereof, with a notch 26. Thus4 an instrument may be readily inserted withinl these notches to force said wedges upwardly and; out of effective engagement with the' walls of the opening and the walls of the 'clamping members.
1 Frqmthe foregoing ,it will beeeen @het I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrmg out the objects ofthe invention and w 11e I'haveparticulariy described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and" in the minor" may-be resorted'to without departing from :the spirit or sacrificing any of the'details 'of the invention. 'Y i lHaviug thus described my invention what I claiinis z 1. In a rall joint,l the combination 'a details of construction pair of rails, each provided withv an opening in the web adjacent the abutting end thereof'; ofia tie therefor, clamping members vpivotally and permanently1 earned on said members 12 tie, means to force said c ampingmembers into effective engagement' with the base. i
ia-nges-and websof vsaid rails, and means on the effective faces of said'clampi'ng meme bers adapted to coperate with thefopeninge `in said rails to secure said rails together simultaneously with the' clampingv of the Asame to the tie.
