RAILHAY-TIE FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 11, 1911.
Patented Jan. 14, 1913.
Serial No. 626,582.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES H. Monoix and JOHN G. SNYDER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of i-iltoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Tie Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
Gar invention relates to the class of tie t'astenings which are employed in connec tion with steel ties and tie plates, and relates particularly to a means of securing the rail with a clip that is held by belt, which bolt is protected by a portion of the clip in order to prevent breaking or bending of the same.
A. further object of our invention is to make a compact adjustable tie fastening whicn will give the maximum strength with the minimum amount of openings in the top of the tie or tie plate.
It also provides a means whereby the size of bolt needed for holding the clip can be reduced to approximately one-half of what is ordina "ily needed in the adjustable clips where the lateral pressure is against the bolt.
lVith this and other objects in view, our invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a steel tie showing the clip applied, and also showing the openings in the top of the tie which are needed for securing the clip. Fig. 2 is a. sectional view through the clip and portion of the tie, part of the same being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a different form of cover plate. Figs. 4, 5, and G are bottom, top and end views of the same. Figs. 7, S, 9 and 10 are similar views of a modified form of cover plate and locking plate. Figs. 11, 12 and 13 are plan and side views of the portion of the clip that engages the base of the rail.
Similar letters and figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the (litterent figures of the drawing.
Our invention consists of a clip as shown in Fig. 11, which has its end 1O slightly raised to fit over the base of the rail, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This plate has an opening 11 with serrated edges l2 Into the opening 11 fits a locking plate 6 which also has serrations on its ends, as shown at 18 Fig. 8. In this figure the locking plate is denoted by 6'. The serrations 13 are made to snugly fit the serrations 12, and the locking plate G, or 6 as the case may be, has an opening 5 through its center. This is to receive the bolt l5 that holds all of the parts together. This locking plate may be made in a separate piece, or integral with the cover plate 1 as is shown in Fig. 3. l Vhen the locking plate 6, or 6, is placed over the bolt, which has first been passed through the top of the tie or tie plate, into the keyhole slot 8, the clip 9 can be adjusted to the necessary position for holding the base of the rail to gage, and put down over the locking plate which will its relative position thereto. Next in order is the cover plate 1, which, it separate from the locking plate as shown in Fig. 7, is put over the bolt 15 through the opening 5 and the nut 1 is provided with a depression 4 which is of suthcient depth to fully protect the nut and upper end of the bolt. The cover plate 1 also has depending sides 2 which extend down over the edges of the clip 9 and lit snugly thereover. These depending sides 2 are of the same length as the thickness of the plate 9 At the rear portion of these depending sides 2 are lugs 3, which extend downward from the sides 2 for a portion of their distance only, and are adapted to enter openings 7 in the top of the tie or tie plate. These openings 7 are so placed relatively to the keyhole slots 8 that the distance from their rear ends, which are far best from the base of the rail is exactly as far from the rear end of the keyhole slot 8 as the outer wall of the bolt hole is "from the rear end of the cover plate 1. The lugs 3 are made of such size that their combined cross section is equal to or slightly greater than the cross section of the bolt.
From this description it will readily be seen that when the parts are all in place and the nut screwed down, the lateral strain upon the bolt will be at the center, and produced by the clip 9 on the serrations of the locking plate f 6 or 6', which in turn puts the strain on the bolt. By reason of the lugs 3 engaging openings in the tie, and the lower end of the bolt engaging the end of the keyhole slot 8, and the upper screwed on the bolt. The cover plate 7 end passing through the bolt hole it would require double shear of t 1e bolt in order to cause a break. It is of coupe, understood that all parts upon which a lat eral strain is put are of slightly larger cross section than the cross section. of the bolt.
From liigs. 3 and 7 it is apparent that when the nut is screwed on the bolt the cover plate 1, which has a iounC surface, will fully protect it. from 2 caused by derailment of cars or from any other lateral blows Ti found necessary 2. washer may be en'ipleyed between the nut and the portion of the cover plate g'aged thereby, but ordinarily this is not requirei'l betrause there is no play betrveen the parts of the clip which would hare a teuoeney to loosen the nut.
further object of our i1 iention to modify the lip so that it can still. be used on straight track withoutthe ad: if feature. To do this we strike up lu from the clip 9 and put a bolt hol in the clip 9 instead of the opening This bolt hole and the lugs in th relatiie position as the bolt hole an 7 on the cover plate in the adjustable tori i o fasteni? The cover plate, which we use in connection with this form oi clip w'll not require the lugs 3, out will be suc- Sl'flllt-ltlllf the same shape and structure as shown in and '7, except that the 3 are omitted. The same openings the tie O1 tie plate, are used as in the case the adius'able clip, and in order to .112 an allowance for some adiustabilit outer clip is made about a quarter shorter than the inner clip. ll. 1 wears on the inside to the extent or a quar ter of an inch, then it can readily be a lusted to f e by a IHQTG 1 clips. it it does not wear to readjustn ent is necessary.
will also be seen by reference 1 to 6 inelusi re that when the locking plate COT) 6 is made integral with 1, there is no shearing U; k
to the pressure 01' the base 6, and the lugs p e ward into the openings p vent shearing strain being put upon the 3 cross section t 4 clips where the strain is put upon the overhanging portion of the bolt.
i ive clann l railway tie fastening consisting of a 'e having openiigs, a clip for engaging se of the rail, a bolt to engage one of LlLQ'S in the plate a cover plate 1t i-niediate the cover plate and clip i ad 'iu-ited positioi'n i c ip n its on said cover plate cooperating clip, subsantially as described.
A railway tie openings in the top ot said tie, a clip for holding the base ot the rail in place a cover plate and belt for holde, openings in the top ol 1 3" )r engaging one oi: the openthe openings a clipw an opening in said clip having serrated edges, a cover plate with depending edges to engage the sides of the clip, lugs on said cover plate for engaging other openings in the top of the tie, aloclcing plate integral with the cover plate and adapted to engage the ser'ations in the opening of the clip and means on the cover plate for protecting the top of the bolt.
The combination of the shell of a metal tie having openings in the top a clip for engaging the base of the rail, a cover plate for the clip, a bolh nieans intermediate the corer plate and :lip and means for supporting both ends of the bolt so as to put the strain in the center.
6. The combination of a metal. tie having opaiings in the top, a clip adapted to engage the base of the rail, a cover plate, a belt for holding all of the parts together and means on said cover plate cooperating with the clip for taking the shearing strain off the bolt.
