To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORLANDO M. DE HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nelson, in the county of Nuckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mail-Carrying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mail carrying devices adapted for use on rural routes, the object of the invention being to provide a carrying apparatus which will include a cableway leading from the house to the roadway and which will be provided with a mail container and means whereby the cable can be operated to cause the container to be moved in the direction of the house on the delivery of the mail and in the direction of the road for collection of the mail.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top plan view there of. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line l-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sect-ion on line 55 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention I preferably provide the endless cableway 1, the ends of the cable being looped around the idle pulley 2 and the driving pulley 3, the latter being mounted on the supporting post 4 which is disposed adjacent to the roadway. The idle pulley 2 is mounted on a post 5 which may be located in close proximity to the house or station to which the mail is to be delivered by the postman. The pulley wheel 3 is provided with a rim 6 in which is formed a V-groove 7 for the cable. This groove is partly embraced by a combined concavo-convexed cable guide and stop member 8. The member 8 is secured in any suitable well known manner to the post 1 and it is bent upon itself to provide upper and lower portions 9 and 10 through which the upper and lower portions of the cable are adapted to pass, the said portions partially embracing the opposite side edges of the peripheral portion of the pulley thereby keeping the said pulley trued and preventing any wabbling motion during its rotation.

gagement with the large driving gear wheel 18. The wheel 13 is operatively supported. on the post let and is provided with a suitable crank handle 15. The intermediate posts 16 for supporting the cable are provided with brackets 17 on which are mounted the lower superimposed rollers 18 and 19 between which the cable is adapted to travel, the upper rollers 19 being yieldable so as to permit of the passage of the box clamp 20 therethrough. The box clamp supports a mail box 21 which may be of any suitable well known construction, the same being preferably provided at one end with a door 22 and in some conspicuous place the box is provided with a signal flag 23. The pulley wheel 2 is partly embraced by a combined cable guide and stop member 24, the same having thereon the superimposed portions 25 and 26 for receiving the superimposed portions of the cable. The portion 10 of the cable guide 8 and the portion 26 of the cable guide 24 are disposed in the pat-h of movement of the box clamp 20 so as to engage the same to limit the movement of the box in two directions, thereby positively preventing movement of the box over the driving and idle pulleys respectively.
In use, the postman desiring to deliver mail to the house places the same in the box 21, after which the driving gear wheel 13 is actuated so that the box will be propelled in the direction of the idle pulley 2. After the mail has been delivered as just described, the box may remain at its receiving station so as to be used when it is desired to place mail in the same for collection.
I claim In a mail carrying device, an endless cable supporting pulleys therefor, a receptacle secured to the cable, means disposed in the path of the receptacle for preventing movement of the same over the supporting pulleys, said means consisting of a concavoconvexed member embracing the opposite peripheral edges of the pulley thereby pre-' venting any lateral movements of the pulley during its rotation.
