This' invention relates to improvements in stereoscopes, and

' 1t consists in the application to the leus-frame of a lazy-tongs extension-trame for holding the picture, the said frame being connected to -the lens-frame in a peculiar way, and provided atthe outer end withv a picture-holder, and also arranged to fold up against the side ofthe lens. v .lhe invention also comprises an arrangement of theeyeshades for-folding down upon the lens, on the onefsidaand the centraldividing screen to fold down onthe' other side, the whole forming a protecting case for the lens, all as hereinafter more fully described.

A is the lensfranie, which is made of wood, metal, or any other suitable slbstance; and Y B isl thelazy-tongs extension-frame, for holding the pictures.v .l

This frame is connected to the lens-frame at the ends of the bars ofthe first joint by pins or screws, '0, with large heads, passing through slots, D, in the lower bar of the lens-frame, -or in a vslotted bar, D', attached thereto, and fastened, by screwing or otherwise, into the ,said bars, and the pivot F at the joint of the first bars also passes through a slot, G, in a bar, H, projecting from the center of the bottom of the frame A, and hinged thcretoatI, so' as to fold up against the lens. The joints of this bar, with the frame, are such that the plate is supported' rm-ly in a horizontal position, so that the pivot F will similarly support the frame B.

The slots D have enlargements, E, at the outer ends, so that when the tongs-frame is closed, and the pins C are moved to the outer ends, they will drop out of connection with the frame, and allow the plate H to fold up and carry the folded frame with it. The pin slides back and forth in the Slot G when the frame B expands or contracts.

K represents a cross-bar, attached to the outer ends of bars of the outer sections of the frame'B, by pins, L, in the said bars, working in slots, M, therein t0 allow the bars to more freely'open and close in ex tending and contracting. This bar carries thespringholders N for yholding the pictures. y

Orepresents the horizontal eye-shade. It is provided with flanges, P, at the ends, and ishinged to the frame at Q', so as to swing down againstlthe front of the lens. y

It represents the end shades. They have anges, S, at top and bottom, and are pivoted to the frame at T, so as to swing around against the front of the lens, the ends meeting at the center.

U represents the central dividing screen, which I make in two plates, and hinge to the frame A, at or near the center, so as to swing' from the ends to the center, as shown in fig. 1,when in use, and, when not in'nse, they fold down against the lens, and cover it,

on the side opposite to that covered by the'shades O It will be seen-that when the shades O and R are folded down they cover the Alens on one side, and their [langes lap the edges, forming a partially inclosing case, which is lcompleted by the screens U, wholly protecting the lens, and, ,when the lazy-tongs extension is folded up against the screens U, the whole is packed in a very srnall space, convenient for carrying in the pocket, or laying away snugly on a shelf or table. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. The employment, in combination with a'stereosc ope lens, of a lazy-tongs extension-frame, for the support of the pictures, substantially in the manner specified.

2. The'c'ombiuation, with the fraine, 0f the slotted -bar K, provided with the holding-sprir'lgs N. substan-l tially as specified.

3. A stereoscope, provided with the' eye-shades, arranged to. fold down upon one side, and the central dividingscreens, to fold on the'other side, inclosing the same in a case, all substantially as specified.
