1 The present invention relates 'tosewing I machines and more particularly to acast off actuating mechanism for the same. In machines employin a hook needle and operatingto form a chain st-itch, amovable guard or slide is. generally provided which covers .01 closes the; hook or barb of the needle while the new loop of thread is; being drawn through the old loop, the hook 'being uncovered while the needle is moving in the opposite direction to permit the loop last drawn through the work to be freed from the hook. The cast-off, therefore, notonly has move'menfwith the needle but also movement relative'thereto.

The object of the present invention-is to devise a mechanism for producing these desired movements of the cast oil which shall be simple in construction, certain in actionand notliable' to derangement 'or excessivewvear. v In the accompanying drawings which illustrate what is now considered the pre ferred form .of-the present invention asapplied. to a'shoe sewing machine employing a straight hooked needle and of thewell known McKay type, such'as. is shown and described with substantial accuracy: in United States Patents- Nos. 36,163 dated August 12, 1862, and 45,422'dated Dec. 13, 1864'. Figure 1 is a top plan view of the needle and cast off actuating mechanisms; Fig. 2 is a side elevationo-f the'same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the needle and cast off and a portionof theiractuating mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a detail in vertical transverse section on line 44, Fig. 1.

In the McKay shoe sewing machine, the straight hook needle 1 is secured at the bottom of a vertically reciprocating needle bar 2 mounted in hearings in the top and bottom plates 3 and 4 respectively of the frame of the machine.
