UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. MERBIAlVI, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOL FOR REMOVING BURS INTERNALLY ON PIPES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. MERRIAM, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Removing Burs Internally on Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a tool or implement for the removal of internal burs on the ends of pipes, such as iron, steam and gas pipes which may have been sawed t0 the proper length, the bur, more or less projecting inwardly, being caused by the sawlng operation; and the removal of such bur is, as manifest, desirable so that the passageway through the pipe may be absolutely free and clear.
The improved tool for the removal of burs internally at the ends of pipes is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and specified in the claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bur removing tool represented as in working relation to the end portion of the pipe on which an internal bur has been left. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing the tool inverted, the pipe shown in conjunction with the tool being represented in cross section.
The bur removing tool consists of a clownwardly tapered body A having a plurality of outwardly extending ribs 6, the faces 0 of which are angular to planes truly radial to the axis of the body, and which ribs are downwardly convergent. The said body is made with an integrally formed axial stud (Z downwardly projecting from its lower end; and it also has an integrally formed tubular head B, the axis of which is at right angles to the length of the body so that a suitably long piece of pipe or a bar may be inserted through such head to serve as an operating handle both for rotating the tool and for forcing it downwadly to its working effect within the end of the pipe. The pipe or bar may be immovably held in the head by the binding screw 6.

D D represent blades of steel detachably secured by the set screws f on the faces 0 of the aforementioned ribs with which the body is provided, such blades having their cutting edges extending beyond the outer edges of the ribs.
Gr represents an interchangeably detachable collet which consists of a circular flanged lower portion j and a hubbed upper portion 9 provided with an axial socket 72. adapted to have a slip fit engagement about the said stud (Z, the same being secured thereon by a binding screw 2' which threads transversely through the said hub and engages against the aforementioned downwardly projecting stud (Z.
The blades are secured to and supported by the ribs more or less nearly at thirds, although not exactly so, as by having a little inequality in the separation of the different blades, chattering action in the use of the tool is avoided, and a more smooth and even cutting action for the removal of the bur is possible.
In practice, the body is made of cast or malleable iron while the blades which are of a good quality of steel are the only members of the device requiring to be ground or machined.
The collet, as apparent from an inspection of Fig. 1, by internally engaging the pipe being worked upon, serves to prevent rocking or tilting of the tool while the latter is being used.
As a commercial article, the tool is sold with several collets of the shape shown in Fig. 1, but having the flange portions thereof variable in diameter for fitting with suitable approximation in pipes of 1%, 1% and 2 diameter so that the user of the tool may interchange one collet for another as occasion may require.
I claim A tool for removing burs internally on the ends of pipes, consisting of a downwardly tapered body having a plurality of outwardly extending ribs which are downwardly convergent, and said body having an integrally formed axial stud downwardly projecting at its lower end, blades detachably secured on the faces of said ribs and binding screw threading through the hub having their cutting edges extended beyond against said stud. 10 the outer edges of such ribs, and means pro- Signed by me at Springfield, Mass, in vided at the upper end of the body for ropresence of two subscribing Witnesses.
toting it, and an interchangeably detachable HENRY T. MERRIAM. collet consisting of a flanged lower portion \Vitnesses:
and a hubbed and socket provided upper M. S. BELLOWs,
portion adapted to engage said stud and a G. R. DRISCOLL.
