UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. O. ASTRUP, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AWNING-GEARING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,WILLIAM J. O. As'rRUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awning-Gearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in awning gearings, and more particularly to a swinging end gear and bracket for operating an awning roller in connection with awning operating mechanism in which the awning or canvas is adapted to be left out or put up through the medium of an awning roller, said swinging end gear mechanism being connected to a suitable driving shaft communicating with suitable crank gear mechanism for driving the same, such for example,as that shown in my Patent No. 1,030,272 issued to me June 25, 1912.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved awning roller end gearing having a swinging hanger yoke provided with bearing members pivotally mounted directly upon the gudgeon or trunnion shaft of the roller and extending on either side of the bearing bracket carrying the latter whereby the small or second bevel gear will be close fitting and the driving shaft allowed to be adjusted and held at any desired angle, thus allowing the fastening of the end bracket to a building with a recess or slanting front, the universal movement of the-hanger bracket permitting the driving shaft to be extended at any angle to meet the lead or slant of the shaft from the crank gear box.
l/Vith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the improved end gearing as it appears attached to the front of a building or other suitable means of support, the awning roller and gudgeon being removed for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts. Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same connected to the end of a wooden awning roller through the medium of one form of Specification of Letters Patent.

gudgeon or end pin. Fig. 3, a side elevation showing a modified form of hanger yoke adjusting and supporting mechanism, the gears being removed for the purpose of clearer illustration. Fig. 4, a perspective view of a modified form of hanger yoke supporting member.
Similar numerals of reference designate like'parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
As a means for operating the awning roller as well as supporting the adjacent end thereof, the latter is adapted to receive and contain a gudgeon or trunnion shaft 1, carrying a bevel gear 2, said shaft 1, being mounted in a suitable bracket 3. The bevel gear 2, is adapted to be operated through the medium of a second bevel gear 4, operatively connected to a driving shaft 5, in any suitable and convenient manner but preferably by means of an adjustable collar or sleeve 6, the latter being adjustably secured to a stub shaft 6, and the bevel gear 4, in the present instance, being secured to the stub shaft 6, by means of a cotter pin 6 As a means for supporting the second bevel gear 4, and the adjacent stub shaft end 6, of the driving shaft 5, whereby a universal connection is secured between the bevel gear 2, and the second gear 4., and permitting of the operation of the driving shaft 5, at any desired angle or inclination, a hanger yoke 7, is provided, said yoke consisting of a main body portion 7, adapted to contain the bevel gear 4, and terminating in oppositely disposed bearing lugs 7 provided with bearing openings receiving and containing the gudgeon or trunnion shaft 1, and extending on either side of the bearing head of the bracket 3, whereby said hanger yoke 7, may swing freely upon the shaft 1, and the bevel gear 4, and driving shaft 5, be held in proper relative position with respect to the bevel gear 2, the opposite end of said driving shaft 5, communicating with and being adapted to receive motion from any suitable and convenient crank gearing in the operation of the awning roll in a well known and understood manner.
As a means for holding and supporting the hanger yoke 7, in adjusted position relative to the bracket 3, so as to prevent any swinging or rocking of the hanger yoke 7, upon the shaft 1, when the desired angle has been given to the driving shaft 5, and
the latter is being operated, the hanger yoke 7, is provided at one side with a suitable supporting and adjusting member 8, pivotally connected at one side of the yoke in any suitable and convenient manner, as for example, by means of a pivot screw bolt 9, as shown, the opposite end of the supporting member 8, being secured to the bracket 3, in a convenient manner, whereby any relative movement of the hanger yoke 7, to the bracket 3, will be prevented when the desired angle has been. given to the driving shaft'5, said supporting and adjusting member 8, being adapted to assume any suitable and convenient form, such for example, as the bracket member 8, shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or the curved member 8, shown in Fig. 3, in which latter instance the curved member 8, has its free end extending through a suitable slot 10, in the bracket 3, and is adapted to be secured in any desired adjusted position by means of a thumb bolt 11.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described some of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an awning gearing, a stationary bracket, a gudgeon shaft mounted therein, a hanger yoke mounted on said shaft, a driving shaft mounted in said hanger yoke, suitable gearing connecting said driving shaft with said gudgeon shaft, and means for supporting and adjusting said hanger yoke 1n any desired posltlon.
2. In an awning gearing, a stationary bracket, a gudgeon shaft carried thereby, a bevel gear on said shaft, a hanger yoke provided -with bearing lugs mounted on said gudgeon shaft and extending on either side of said bracket, a driving shaft mounted in said hanger yoke, and a bevel gear thereon meshing with said first mentioned bevel gear.
3. In an awning gearing, the combination with a bracket, a gudgeon shaft, and a bevel gear; of a hanger yoke provided with hearing members pivotally mounted on said gudgeon shaft and extending on either side of said bracket, a driving shaft having one end mounted in said hanger yoke, and a second bevel gear carried by said driving hanger yoke.
5. An awning gearing, comprising a statlonary bracket, a gudgeon shaft mounted therein, a bevel gear on said gudgeon shaft,
a hanger yoke provided with bearing lugs mounted on said gudgeon shaft and extending on either side of said bracket, one of, said lugs being interposed between the latter and said bevel gear, a driving shaft mounted in said hanger yoke, a bevel gear on said driving shaft and meshing with said first 'mentioned bevel gear, and a support-mg member pivotally connected at one side of said yoke and detachably connected to said 1 bracket.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
