IMPROVEMENT -ZIEN EQUALIZING-BARS -FOR RAILWAY CAR-TRUCKS.
The Schedule refened to in these Letters Patent end making part of the same,
To all whom it tmay concern.-
Be itknown' that I, ADDISON OVERBAGH, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne and in the vState of Pennsylvania, have invented `certain new and uscful Improvements in Oar-Trucks; and do hereby dcclare that the following isla: full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the adeninp-.mying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of-this specification.
The nature of. my invention consists in the construction aud arrangement of a compensating equaljzer for railroad trucks, as will be hereiuafteriiilly set 'ort i.
In order to enable others skilled iutbe art to which vmy invention appertains to make and use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railroad car-truck with my compensating equalizer-s attached;
,Figure 2 is a plan view of the same; and Figure 3 is a side View, showing other modes cinpplyiug the equalizer.
A represents the frame of the truck;
B B, the wheels; 'and C C, the journal-boxes forl said wheels, all constructed in any ofthe known aud usual ways.
On top of each jourual-hox C rests `one end of the eqnalizingbar D, which passes under the fulcrnm spring E placed-on the under side of the frame.
The other, end of the bar D is connected by jointbolt a with the spring b on'top of the frame, the bolt a passing'throngh the same. The other baron the same side of4 the truck crosses the first bar, as shown in fig. 1, it being hung and acting precisely in the same manner on the other journal-box.
The gum or other spring E, being the fnlcrum for its bar D, can be set at such pointin the radius as will best promote the riding of the car, and the use of the springs.
The particular advantagr derived from the equalizing-bars D D is that the shockccommunicated to that end of the equalizer which lies directly over the journal, re-acts on the opposite end of said bar, and has the tendency to depress the opposite end of the truck, thereby compensating for this elevating of the end on which it receives its shoclgand actually throwing the work onboth springs when but one wheel is obstructed.
I do not confine myself to any particular kind of springs to use for'thosemarked EV and b, as any kind of spring may be' used which is deemed best adapted for the purpose. The mode of attaching'the equalizer may aise be changed, to conform to such kind of springs as may bc employed.
The double equalizer may also `be used in the inanner shown in fig. 1S. yThe bar Dfrcsting on one journal-box C, passing under fulcrum-spriug` E, and itsv other end resting on a spring, fitted inf the jaw or pedestal iu which the other journal-box is placed. lhe equalizer on the same side of the truck to be hung in'precisely the same manner, and passing the former.
1n fig. 3 I have also shown the manner of hanging equalizers on four-whecl cars, which are generally too long to admit ot' any of the ordinary equalizing-bars. The equaliziug-bar D2 rests on the journal-box, passes under fulcrum spring E, and is attached to joint a1 Tile other journal-equalizing bar, &c., 0n the same, side of the car or truck, to bc hung in precisely the same'mauner.
The .gain in this principle of hanging this kind of equalizer -is the dilferencc between the motion of the bar directly opposite its communication with the body of the car ori'rame, and the end which lies directly-` ove'r'thc journal; that will also depend ou the dis.- tance the springfulcrum .is placed relative to the ends of the bar. v
In the drawing I have shown a Single joint at one end of the equalizer, but itmay bet'riecessary to use a double joint, to allow for the mot-ion'of the har.
