SCAFFOLD DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
Application filed January 27, 1912. Serial No. 673,825.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRIST NnLsnN, a citizen of Denmark, residing at Big Rock, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scaffold devices, and particularly to those used for the purpose of shingling roofs.
The object of my invention is to provlde a handy and efficient device for suspending scaffolds or other supports which may readily be adjusted according to the desires of the worker employing the same.
The device further provides for novel means for folding the same into a compact form to permit of its being easily handled in shipping or packing away.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 of the drawings shows a front elevation of the preferred form of my invention, dotted lines indicating the position of the stirrups when folded. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken about on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the manner of securing the stirrups in folded position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the frame, the rope being shown in section, and Fig. 4 is a view illustrating my invention in use, for shingling purposes.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring now to the drawings and specifically describing the invention, 1 denotes a pulley frame having a pulley 2 rotatably mounted therein, and being formed with vertical spaced side members 3 between the upper portion of which is a horizontal connecting bar 1.
5 designates a supporting rope which is adapted to be passed through the side members 3 and around the pulley 2, said rope being adapted to be engaged by the rope engaging dog 6 pivotally mounted on the connecting bar 4 and normally held. in engagement with said rope by means of the leaf spring 7 which bears against it at one end while at its opposite end the said spring is suitably fastened to the bar aforesaid.
Pivo-tally mounted on the frame 1 is a stirrup having a set screw 9 extending through one side thereof and adapted to engage the supporting beam 10 upon which the worker stands or is supported.
As thus described my device is applied to the opposite ends of the supporting beam 10 in the use of the invention and is suspended from the roof of a building by ropes 5, having at their upper ends hooks 11 engaging over the ridge 12 of said roof. However, in many instances it is desirable to use more than one supporting beam for obvious reasons and in this case the frame 1 is formed with o-ffstanding arms 13 upon the outer ends of which are mounted clips 14, and the stirrups 8 are pivotally secured to these clips. This pivotal mounting of the stirrups permits the beam on one side to assume a lower position than the one mounted in the opposite stirrup, the offstanding arms 13 assuming an inclined position. This is particularly useful where the operator raises one side of the beam at a time. On the under side of said arms 13 I provide depending apertured lugs 15 so that when not in use or when it is desired to fold the stirrups into inoperative position, they are swung pivotally beneath said arms and the set screws 9 engaged in the apertured lugs aforesaid.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that my device can be used not only as above described but will be equally useful in supporting scaffolds whether located on the roofs or against the walls of the building, without the need of materially altering my device.
It is only necessary in the operation of my device for the worker to pull on the free end of the rope 5 releasing thereby the pressure of the spring actuated dog 6 thereagainst, and when the desired position has been reached, the ropes 5 are released and the dogs will immediately operate to engage said ropes and hold the beams in position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A scaffold supporting device comprising a pulley frame adapted to receive a supporting rope, means 011 said frame to lockingly engage the rope, stirrups pivotally carried by said frame to receive the scaffold beam, and means for positively holding the stirrups in engagement with the beam when in operative position and for holding the same in engagement with the frame when in folded inoperative position.
2. A scaffold supporting device comprising a pulley frame adapted to receive a supporting rope, means on said frame to lookingly engage the rope, offstanding arms formed on the frame, clips mounted on said arms, stirrups pivotally secured to said clips and adapted to receive the scaffold supporting beams, apertured lugs formed on said arms, and set screws mounted in the stirrups and adapted to positively hold the beams aforesaid when in operative position and to be engaged in the apertured lugs when the stirrups are in folded inoperative position. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
