Be it 'known "that we, Moses MILLER Jacon Bailing and MYER SMITH, citizens of the United lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to attachments for sewin machines and has for its ob ect to provide ,an improved attachment in the nature'of a'guide or gage for insuring a uniform width of material between the seam and the edge thereof, whether the seam is in a hem o'r otherwise,such improved attachment'being adapted for operation either with or without a trimming knife, and also adapted for attachment to the machine in such manner as to (gage or guide either the right or left hand e ge of the material bemg operated upon.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of an attachment of the character specified which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.

In order that the construction and operation of our invention may be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art to which it'appertains, we have illustrated a preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, and will now proceed to specifically describe the invention in connection with said drawing in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention and so much of a sewing machine to which it is attached as is necessary to an understanding of it; Fig. 2 represents a detail sectional view, and Fig. 3 represents a detail, sectional view on a plane at a right angle to that of Fig. 2.

ed a sleeve or block 14 securable at any desired height on theresser bar by a setscrew '15, which bloc projects rearwardly into the trough of a trough-shaped horiaontal bar 16, and said bar is securable to the block Mat any-desired point in the length o f'the bar, by means of a set screw 17 passing through a longitudinal slot 18 in said bar, and into saidblock 14. The adjustment of the bar 16 on the block 14 determines the distance of the seam 19 from the edge of the fabric bein stitched and this distance can be accurately adjusted by means of agraduated scale 21 on the upper face of the bar 16. The outer end of the bar 16 is closed by an inte al end plate 22 (Fig. 2) which is fitted to s ide in the trough of a vertical trough-shaped bar 23 and said vertical bar is securable at any point in its height to the plate 22 of the bar 16, by means of a set screw 24., which'passes through a vertical slot 25 of the bar 23 and is threaded into the end plate 22 of the graduated bar 16. The adjustment of the vertical bar 23 on the bar 16 determines the height of the bearing plate of the guide or go from the table. and this distance may a e accurately adjusted by means of a graduated scale 26 on the front face of the bar 23.

Rigidly secured to the bottom of the vertical bar 23 is a forwardly projecting foot 27 which sets vertically at such a distance from the table as may be determined by the adjustments heretofore described and on the inner face of said foot 27 is secured a horizontal bearing plate 28 which is adjustably secured to said foot 27 by means of a set screw 29 passed through a vertical slot 30 in the foot and threaded into a vertical car 31 on the bearing plate, and a set screw 32 passed through the lower portion of the slot 25 of the vertical bar 23 and threaded into another vertical ear 33 on the bearin plate. By means of the set screws 29 an 32, the difference in height of the bottom of the foot 27 and the bearin plate 28 is accurately adjusted to the difference in thickness of materials, as indicated by the material 20 under the bearing plate and the material 34 under the foot. The foot 27 serves as a bearing for the edge of the material 20 and causes the seam 19 to be made at a uniform distance from said edge, and the bearing plate 28 prevents the edge of said material from doubling up.

3. An attachment of the character described comprising a' block slidable on the resser v bar-0t a sewing machine, means for securing it at any desired height thereon, a

horizontal graduated bar, means for securing it at any desired point in its length to the block, a vertical graduated bar, means for securing it at any point in its height to the horizontal graduated bar; and an integral forwardly projecting foot carried by the vertical graduated ar, a horizontal bearing plate, means for adjustably securing each end of the bearing plate to the oot.

4. An attachment of the character described comprising a horizontal troughshaped, longitudinally slotted, graduated bar provided with an end plate, a block adapted to be vertically adjusted on the resser foot of a sewing machine and proecting into the trough of the bar, a set screw projected through the slot of bar, a vertical, trough-shaped, longitudinallyslotted, graduated bar embracing the end late of the horizontal bar, a set screw pros ected through the slot of the vertical bar and threaded into the end plate of the horizontal bar, an integral, forwardly rejecting foot on the vertical bar, and a caring plate adjustably secured to said feet.
