SAMUEL B. GOFF, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
DEVICE FOR LABELING BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 23, 1911.
Patented Dec. 31,1912.
Serial No. 650,943.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. Gore, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful De vice for Labeling Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for labeling bottles, more particularly those having round bottoms, the same embodying a label lifter and carrier which maybe moistened to cause a label to adhere thereto, a label holder to which said lifter and carrier may be presented to remove a label therefrom, a member for supporting the labels so that the bottles may be applied to the latter, a reservoir for adhesive material which latter may be applied to the bottles so as to coat the same, means for removing the bottles from the supporting pad in said reservoir, means for directing the coated bottles to the labels awaiting the same, and means for rolling the bottles so that the labels adhere fully thereto and are completely and smoothly rolled thereon.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a portion of a bottle labeling device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on line m-w Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section thereof on line y Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a transverse vertical section of the label lifter and carrier on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a transverse vertical section of a portion on line ze- Fig. 8. Fig. 6 represents a top view of the label holding bed without the labels, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 represents a top or plan view of a member employed for rolling the bottles after contacting with the labels. Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line a-a Fig. 7. Fig. 9 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line b?) Fig. 8. Fig. 10 represents a side elevation of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A, Figs. 1 and 2, designates a pan for containing water or other fluid adjacent. to which is the label holder ll, the same consisting of a box B in the top C in which are openings D, in which are placed the vertically arranged fingers E which project in part above said top and have their lower ends connected wvith the follower F which is seated on the spring i which is supported on the bottom of said box, it being noticed that a pack of labels is placed on the top C of the box and fitted between the fingers E, the fingers being adapted to be depressed so that the UPPCIIDOSlJ label of the pack is ex posed and may be removed as will be here inafl'er .more fully described.
ll designates a label litter and carrier, see Figs. 1, 2, S and 4., the same consisting of a frame composed of the bottom J the followers K above the same and the springs L interposed between said followers and bottom, said bottom and followers being separated forming the passage M to receive the plunger N which is provided with the head P, the sides of which overhang the followers K, the latter having connected with them the depending hangers Q whose lower portions are guided freely in open-' ings in the bottom J so that when the plunger is lowered, the followers yield and the lower end of the plunger and the hangers protrude below the underside of the bottom J, as a throw-off for the label, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
R designates a bed having in its upper face the curved depressions or pockets S which extend parallel across said bed, the same be ing adapted to have labels and subsequently bottles placed over the same. Adjacentto said bed It is the tank or reservoir T, see Figs. 1, 3, and 5, the same being adapted to contain gum, paste, or other adhesive material and having within it the follower U which is supported on the spring V in said reservoir. On said follower is the perforated pad or cushion W, it being noticed that when said follower is depressed, it dips greater into the adhesive material in the reservoir, and some of said material oozes upwardly through the cushion and so is directed against the sides of the bottles which are placed on the cushion. Above said reservoir is the bottle-carriage X from the head of which depend the plates Y which are freely fitted in the body X of said carriage so as to rise and lower therein and be guided in such motions. The under edges of said plates llOO have recesses therein adapted to be fitted over the bottles while resting on the cushion IV, it being noticed that the tank T is next to the bed R, for all of which see more par- 5 ticularly Fig. 3. In order to cause the body X of the carriage X to press resiliently against the bottles, see Fig. 5, the underside of said head has secured to it the strips X of rubber or other suitable material, the ef- M fect of which is evident.-
Z designates a device for finally rolling labels fully around the bottles, the same consisting as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 of the head Z having sides Z hanging therefrom,
and the resilient cushion Z on the under side of said head, it being noticed that said device is adapted to freely straddle the bottles, it being noticed also that the end of the bed R has a table or platform A extend- 23 ing therefrom so that the completely labeled bottles may be rolled thereon and directed from said bed to a place of deposit or from which they may be removed by hand.
The operation is as follows :The label 25 lifter and carrier H is dipped slightly into the pan A so that the underside of its bottom J is moistened. Said member H is then presented to the top of the pack of labels and pressed thereupon whereby a label adheres to said bottom after which the member is conveyed over the bed B, when the plunger N is depressed, the latter with the hangers Q then descending and serving to throw-off the label and place it on one of the pockets S. These operations are repeated so as to place labels on the other pockets S. Bottles are now seated on the cushion W, and the carriage X is placed over the bottles when the recessed plates Y freely embrace the bottles. Then the carriage is depressed, and the adhesive material in the reservoir T is supplied to said cushion W. The plunger N is now removed from the member H, so that the passage M in the latter is unob- 4,5 structed. Then the carriage X is moved in the present case, to the left, thus rolling the bottles over the cushion WV and applying the adhesive material to the sides of the bottles. It will be not-iced that in Fig. 3 three bottles 53 are shown on the carriage X and three labellifters and carriers are placed over the bed R which is formed with a corresponding number of depressions or pockets S. Two of the label lifters and carriers are shown in 55 dotted lines because they will be employed if it is desired to work the carriage X with the three bottles thereon, although but one bottle at a time may be labeled, hence only one label lifter and carrier with its passage M therein may be employed and this is shown in full lines in Fig. 3. As the carriage continues its motion, it rolls the first bottle over the end wall of the reservoir T and over the member H when said bottle will drop into the passage M of said member and upon the label below the base of said passage said label being over the first pocket S. To assist this operation, the underside of the reservoir T is provided with the roller T which permits said reservoir to be tilted toward the bed B. As the carriage continues its travel, the second bottle is rolled over the first named bottle and over the first label lifter and carrier and so drops into the adjacent label lifter and carrier H and upon the pocket S underneath the same and so the third bottle will be manipulated it dropping into the last label lifter and carrier and upon the pocket S underneath the same. The carriage, as well as the label carrier, is now 0 removed and the rolling device Z placed over the bottles and reciprocated whereby the labels are taken up by the bottles and fully and smoothly rolled thereover, after which the bottles as labeled may be rolled upon 5 the table A and finally removed therefrom or caused to drop into a suitable basket or other article of deposit, after which the operations described may be repeated from the beginning.
The follower U in the reservoir T is of the form of a hollow frame, the undersides U of which are overhanging inwardly or tapering from the bottom upwardly, so that when the follower is depressed the adhesive material is directed by said sides to the cushion WV so that the latter is unfailingly supplied with said material and caused to pass upwardly through the same.
The undersides of the followers K of the label lifter and carrier H have channels K thereon and adjacent to the same are the posts K it being noticed that when a bottle as coated with adhesive material is directed by the carriage X to said lifter and carrier and rolled over the same, the coating will roll with the bottle in said channels while the bottom and neck portions of the bottles will roll on the faces of the followers at the ends of said channels, by which provision the coating will not contact with said faces and be applied thereto, while the posts K serve to guide the labeled bottles true over the followers J to the passage M.
