CONVEYANGE AND SIGNALING APPLIANCE THEREFOB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31,1912,
Original application filed April 24, 1911; Serial No. 622,858. Divided and this application filed September 18, 1911. Serial No. 649,964.
declare the following to be a full,.clear, and
exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable othersvskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to alarm signaling devices for conveyances, such as automobiles,- boats, etc., and to improvements in such devices and the systems thereof my general object being to produce 1n such a. device, a system and apparatus associated therewith which will meet the requirements of modern 1 road 1n front of him or from the operation The controlling device use upon such conveyances.
Another object of my invention is the production of a signal device controlling means in which a device for modifying theenergy delivered to the signal device is employed and inwhich such'modifying device'is preferably mounted in a dust proof, water proof casing with signal controlling means and both mounted in a convenient place prefer'ably upon the steering wheel.
Otherobjects of my invention will appear from the particular description following.
Whlle the invention itself will be best understood by reference to such description when taken in connection with the accom panying illustration showing a spec fic em-' bodlment thereof, the scope will be more particularly'pointed out n the appended claims.
This application is a-division of plication 622858, filed April 24-, 1911.
il-er- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a conveyance showin the signal device in combination therewit Fig. 2 is a plan view of the circuit controller casing and contents. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along one axis of the device shown in Fig.
2. Fig. 4 is a section taken along an axisat right angles to the axis upon which Fig. 3 is taken. Fig. 5 is a diagram of the circuit connections used.
Referring now to the drawings, a convey ance is shown at 1. Means for controlling thesteering of this conveyance is employed and in Fig. 1 is shown as a steering post 2, upon which is mounted a steering wheel 3.
I have shown a steering wheel, though any well known form of steering device may be ed upon a conveyance, preferably upon the steering wheel, as shown in Fig. 1.
Means for controlling the signal device 4 are mounted upon the conveyance, preferably housed inside the casing 5. In the form shown this controlling device consists of a;- switch S controlled bya push button P,
which when mounted upon the steering wheel enables the driver to control the signal device with the pressure of the thumb 3 d without detracting his attention from the of the conveyance. S and the signal device t, are associated by connecting meansti, here shown as circuit connectors? and 8. a
Inorder that the apparatus which I have inventedmay be a success, it is highly important that the apparatus should be soconstructed as to be readily placed u on cars which arealready in use. I provi e in the circuit a current modifying, device X here shown asya resistance device, preferably a non-inductive resistance. I also provide a casing 5 which is secured by a bracket 61 and screws 62 to some part of the conveyance, preferably as shown in Fig. 1, to the steering vwheel. A cover GOis-fastned upon thetop of thecasin 5 by screws 63 making the samedust proo and water proof. The circuitcontroller S which consists ofswitch springs 64, 65 and 66 controlled by'the push button P, is mounted upon the lnside of this casing. In order that the current modifying device X may be protected from moisture and dust, in ordertliat it may be readily installed with the rest of the apparatus, upon the machine, and in order that it may be readily accessible, I mount it with the circuit controller's inside the casing 5-. An entering port 70 and channel 71 are shownin the walls of the casingfi. throu J1 which the connecting means 6 enter t e casing". Contact terminals 72 are provided on the inside of this casing for the conduo.
tors 7 and 8. At 7 3 I show a clamp for se curing the terminals of these conductors in tionable features to those which are now in.
use and have added to the convenience of these devices both in the installation and in the use thereof. Hitherto it has been difiicult to install devices of this kind upon conveyances and to make such installation secureenough to prevent the dislodging of the apparatus by the vibrations of the machine. I have provided apparatus which may be in stalled by simple means upon conveyances of the character described and whenso installed will be so securely mounted .thereon, that the vibrations of the machine will not disturb the same.
While I have shown this particular form of my invention and these particular forms of the details thereof, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that numerous and extensive departures from the form and details of the apparatus here shown may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, the same being herein shown in this form solely for the purpose of clearly illustrating one specific embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a device of the "class described adapted to be used upon the steering wheel of a vehicle, the combination of a fiat cylindrical casing formed from a single sheet of metal and having an opening in the side thereof, a conduit stud inserted in said open-- mg, an insulating bushing in said stud, a
top for said casing having an opening in the center of said top, the edge of the top about the opening being turned upward to form an annular boss around the opening serving as a guide, a push button in said opening guided by said boss, an annular boss on the side of said button and at the bottom thereof adapted to engage the underside of the opening in the top, three cont-act springs for controlling an electric circuit mounted upon the bottom of said casing and controlled by said push button, one of said springs forcing said push button upward until the boss upon the button engages the under side of the edge of the opening in the top, a resistance device mounted in said casing adjacent said contact springs and having its terminals connected to two of said springs and means for connecting said casing to a steering wheel.
2. In a device of the class described, adapted to be used upon the steering wheel of an automobile, the combination of a flat cylindrical casing having an opening in the side thereof through which electric conductors may be led into the casing, a top for said casing having an opening therein, a boss around said opening, a push button mounted in said opening and having a boss formed around its side near the bottom to .engage the underside of the top around the RAY H. MANSON.
