lBWITFFING MECHANISM FOR CAR-PLATFORMS.
PatcntecPDec. 211, 1912. semi N0. 649,553.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that we, (lnAiiLns 'l'. lesriniti-i and CiiiiiiLi-zs l". llnianu, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Ms- `souri, have invented a certain new and useful I inproycnient in Bulling lvlechanisni :tor Carllatl'oriiis, et which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains teI make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, :forming pai-,t of this specification, 1n which- Figure l is a top plan view of a cast metal plattform constructed in accordance with our invention, and with the operating paits ot the butling mechanism removable therel'roni. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 2 2 o'll Fig. jl. l
(ur invention relates generally to rallway car iindert'i.aine construction, and more particularly to the platform in which is toi-.ined the pockets that receive the springs and certain niovable parts ot the .butling y gear.
The principal objects of our invention are, to arrange in a cast metal platform a series oi butliiig gear pockets particularly designed and adapted to receive operatingl parts ot' the butl'ing gear, to provide a particularly strong and rigid construction between the butter beam and end sill ot' the nuclei-fratrie,
to provide a construction wherein the operating.,r rts of the builing mechanism may be readily placed in or removed troni position without detaching the vestibule or the butling plates Jfrom its stems, and further, to provide bearing ribs on the walls of the pockets for the spring follower plates, thereby doing,l away with the wear of Idirectly upon the faces of the walls oi .the pockets and also providing a ci'irstruction which may be easily and quickly chipped oill or cut away to provide a perfect wearing lit for the spring follower plates.
l'iith Vthe above objects in view, our invention consists in certain novel 'features otl construction aiid arrangcn'ient et parts hereinafter more l'iilly described and elaiii'ied.
Referring by numerals to the acconnianying drawings, lO designates the end sill et' a car iiiiderlraine and ll the butler beam. Formed integral with and arrai'ig'ed between the central v[ )ortionsot the end sill and butler beam is a pair of longitudinally extending ,of the plates 25 .o't'
said Yfollower platesr walls 25, the upper and lower edges of which are flanged outwardly, as designated by 26. Arranged to the sides of the walls 25 and extending between the sill l0 and .beam 1l are walls 25, the upper edges of which are flanged inwardl as designated by 25", and arranged to the sides of said walls 25L.between the' end sill and buffer beam are walls 25, the upper ends of which are flanged inwardly, designated by 25". The walls 25, 25 and 25c are parallel with each other, and the space between the forward portions of the walls 25 forni th'e center builing gear pocket, while the space between the forward portions ci the walls 25 and 25 form pockets for the side buffer'stem mechanism.
Formed integral with the walls 25 is a `tri-insversely disposed plate 27 in the center ot which is formed a bearing 28 for the rear portion of the center buffer stem. Formed integral with and projectingr inwardly from the walls 25 in front of this plate 27 are vertically disposed plates 29, which form stops for certain of the spring follower plates oi the center stem buling gear.
lleinlorcing flanges 29 are formed on the walls 25 between the plate 27 and plates 29, and formed on said walls between the plates 29 and beam ll are horizontally disposed flanges 30 beneath which the ends of thev center buflfinpr spring follower plates operate.
FormedI integral with the outer faces of the plates 25, and with the inner faces of the plates 25, for the side buffer spring follower plates, and formed integral with the lower portions and 25 immediately in front andbelow these lugs 3l ai'e horizontally disposed plates 32 on .top ot' which are formed longitudinally extepding ribs 353 which serve'as bearings for theside butler spring,` follower plates. i
Formed on the 'faces of the walls 25 and 25 immediately above these plates l2 and in` ii'ont of the lugs 3l are longitudinally e.\'
tending; pairs oi ribs 37 which seive as bearings itor the ends of the side butlinp; spring 'follower plates.
The center bulling stein extends through tlu'heaiii 1l and operates through the bearing and the center biillina spring; itollower plates operate beneath the [langes 30.`
The side butl'ci` spriin;r i'ollowei plates ai'e positioned immediately in'firont ot' the lugs 3l, and duringr their backward and Ltorward are lugs 31 which form stops ilo movements said 'follower PMiX-,s xm- Lprm and against ille pairs ofi ribs 3 and 37.
